I was born in Portsmouth, VA and my family is a cornerstone of the old city of Suffolk, where I was brought home from the hospital and where we first lived. The history of southeastern Virginia, and of this country really, are my favorite things about home. I was a Navy daughter, and an Army wife. After three deployments, the missed birth of our daughter, and dwindling chances to change course, my husband and I chose the civilian life, college degrees, and a homestead. We have one living child, Audrey Savannah, the light of our lives. My birthright foods are bass, blue crab, venison from the Virginian woods, and my aunts cheddar surprise biscuits from scratch. Those, I'll never forget.
My favorite things to cook
Recipes from scratch. They bring the "oohs" and "ahhs", and all the while I am usually experimenting! They hardly have any idea that I'm tickled inside at the compliments!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I am going to TURN homemade pizzas into a family tradition of my own, since it turns out so well when I do it from scratch. My husband and daughter never eat so quietly or happily.
My mother still makes her lovely spanish rice, and rice and chicken soup, that sends people practically out of their chairs. Thinking about it now, I can't wait to go see Mom and have a bowl.
My cooking triumphs
Homemade pizza from scratch! It was fabulous, and a blushing triumph. I need to form a measured recipe and add it to allrecipes.com soon!
I also make fabulous homemade tofu with my soymilk maker, but nobody else in the house likes tofu so I don't get to feel as special.
My cooking tragedies
I can't cook lentils. Well, not the way I like to experiment with foods and find my own way anyway. Without a precise recipe card in hand, I simply will not attempt that disaster again. That said, boy I love lentils!
