Banana Oat Bars

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2010
As is 4 stars. I cannot imagine making this in a 9x13" pan or using 2 teaspons of b. power. For a birthday dessert I made this in a 9x9" and added butterscotch & chocolate chips, and chopped walnuts. I used 1 tsp each of baking powder and soda. 30 minutes was all it needed. For myself I made a healthy version of this: 1/4 cup sugar, replaced the butter with unsweetened applesauce, unsweetened vanilla almond milk, added 2 tbsp ground flaxseed, 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein, and used 1/2 tsp each of baking soda & powder. I cannot stay out of these!! 10 gold stars!

Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2009
4 stars with the recommendations for the yogurt and butter. I did swap out the butter for unsweetened applesauce. Even though I used lemon flavored yogurt, the lemon flavor was too subtle. I added 1 tsp of lemon extract. The DH gave it two thumbs up.

Flourless Chocolate Cake I

Reviewed: Jul. 10, 2009
I've tasted better and other flourless cakes recipes I've tried turned out to be cakes. This was more gooey and I would possibly consider this like a torte? At 5,280ft here in Denver I believe the baking temp and/or time needs adjustment. The middle of my cake was just raw. Tastes better cold than warm.

Chewy Chocolate Chip Granola Bars

Reviewed: Jun. 16, 2009
Yum! Just as good, if not better, than store bought. Thank you soo much for this basic recipe. I used 1/4 cup sugar free maple syrup and 1/4 cup honey in place of the corn syrup. Other swaps: 1/4 cup brown sugar, broken graham crackers instead of cereal, part raisins part almonds for the marshmallows, ground flaxseed for wheat germ, and added a scoop of whey protein powder. I pressed the mix firmly into the pan before baking (27 minutes at 350) and I had no crumble issues. I cannot wait to try it with nutella and broken oreos!

Oatmeal Pancakes II

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2009
Maybe this is ok as is, but based off my healthy tweaks save yourself some time and find another recipe. These were dense and bland. The recipe made 7 4" pancakes. I used coaches toasted oats, wheat flour, applesauce in place of the oil, added chopped toasted pecans and 1 tsp of ground cinnamon. Even with using infused berry maple syrup, these were no good. A big downer at my Easter brunch!

French Crepes

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2009
Great basic crepe recipe that can be used in savory or sweet desserts. I had no issues with the batter, and I used 1/2 wheat and 1/2 white flour.

Gingerbread Men

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2008
Not as potent as the typical gingerbread cookie containing molasses. Simple enough to let my nieces mix this together as I "help" them. Going to try it with chocolate pudding and see what I get. Keep the baking time to 8 minutes for the perfect cookie. Also sprinkle some cinammon sugar mix onto them before baking to forgo frosting ;)

Candy Bar Brownies

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2008
It worked in a smaller pan. For the 9x13 there wasn't enough for the crust and sprinkled topping. After using a 8x8 I had some left over, but not enough for a second batch so I ended up throwing it away. Maybe a 9x9? I used twix and milk choc & caramel chips. It was ok, not the greatest thing I've tasted and a bit on the rich side. There are way better things out there to make for your sweet tooth.

Slow Cooker Italian Beef for Sandwiches

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2008
Do not use boullion (sp) beef cubes as substitutes for beef broth. Overly salty to the point I almost threw it away. There's a lot that melted cheese can do.

Steak Tip Marinade

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2008
It's good and unique.. not BBQ but not your run of the mill marinade. I've made this twice, cutting the recipe by half. My marinade times have only been a little over an hour, and they still turn out flavorful. Psst... I add 1/2 tbsp of Italian dressing mix/seasoning to the marinade, and I season the steaks with the Montreal steak seasoning. Make sure to let your steaks come to room temp before throwing them on the grill.

86 the cran and add some 7up or club soda. For something even better, use a vanilla vodka. It's a grown up Orange Julius!

Fruit Salsa with Cinnamon Tortilla Chips

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2008
I'm going to be one of those people you hate, because I'm rating this from the original recipe and the modifications I made. I don't think I would've liked the salsa if I had followed the recipe to a T. My salsa: 2 kiwi, 2 mangos, 2 pink ladies, 8oz raspberries, 2 tsp sugar, 3 tbsp strawberry preserves, and some lime juice to prevent oxidation of the banana and apple. Chips I used cinnamon sugar from Whole Foods. Next time I might cut down on the apple and add another fruit (blueberries or peaches or both)

Alyson's Broccoli Salad

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2008
I blanched the broccoli, and I used light mayo. Yumm! Make sure to add the bacon and sunflower seeds just before serving. No need for me to go to my favorite salad bar to get this goodness anymore :)

Chocolate Rum Balls I

Reviewed: Dec. 21, 2007
With a 1/2 cup Spiced Captain, these still pack a punch 4 days later. In my second batch I made some modifications (who on here doesn't tweak recipes?) 1/4 rum, 1/4 Kahlua, 3/4 - 5/8 pkg Chocolate Cream Oreo's (eyeballed it), 1 cup finely ground (food processor) Hazelnuts, 1/2 cup finely ground dark chocolate, and a tbsp of freshly ground dark roast coffee beans. Absolutely to die for. I rolled these babies in a mixture of ground chocolate and cocoa.

Soft Molasses Cookies V

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2007
Easy to make, easy to roll, and turned out soft. But the smell of the molasses and/or batter reminded me of ipecac. These cookies were also bland and not sweet. I made these to add to treat bags, and I don't like them enough to give to others. If I don't want to eat these why should I pawn them off to others?

Gluehwein

Reviewed: Dec. 2, 2007
This could be great. Unless you're a sugar addict, I'd cut the sugar down to 1/2c. Following some suggestions I used low sugar oj and still found this too sweet. For this I used Barefoot Merlot for the wine. Great start though :)

Beau Monde™ Dip

Reviewed: Dec. 2, 2007
Even with light mayo and sour cream this tasted rich. The ingredients I completely eyeballed since I only needed a small amount of dip. I will never have to by Veggie dip from the store again!

Hot Corn Dip

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2007
I ended up mixing this recipe with another corn dip recipe from this site. Maybe mix in some shredded cheddar but don't coat the top of the dip with it before baking. You'll end up with a sheath of cheese that's hard to cut into with a chip. Add some cayanne to this to pick up the zing!

Cuban Ropa Vieja

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2007
This was ok, even after doubling the garlic, cumin and cilantro. I even subbed the tomato sauce for diced tomatoes with green chiles. After 4 hours on high I was not able to shred the beef. It didn't remind me of my cuban restaurant affairs from Florida at all.

Pork Chops and Scalloped Potatoes

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2007
Based off of my own modification this had some flavor (marinate in soy and worsh with montreal steak seasoniong 3hrs) Instead of doubling the gravy aka liquid, I only used 3 2" pork chops (all I had)I also used garlic salt with the liquid. The pork was moist, the potatoes were perfect, but this is like a soup. I did not have to nuke or prebake my potatoes. Maybe work with the sauce, or quarter the taters..... As I said a great base
