**For me, 8 apples are too many and I had some left over that I couldn't fit in the pie, so next time I'll use about 5 or 6. This is what I added to mine: 3/4 cup both white and brown sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 T cornstarch, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp nutmeg. I also used the Pillsbury refridgerated pie crust dough, which worked wonderfully and saved time. I used one crust for the pie and the other for the lattice. I followed the recipe and poured the sugar and butter mixture over the top of the pie and it made a crispy, caramelized crust on top that was just amazing! It was slightly watery when it was first cut, but thickened up over time. I'm not surprised this pie won a 1st place ribbon!!!
