High Temperature Eye-of-Round Roast

I was really excited about trying this recipe BUT it was not successful for me. I have a gas oven. I followed the instructions using a 5.5 pound eye of the round and cooked it for 39 minutes at 475. I then turned the oven off and let it sit for 2.5 hours. When I opened the oven and inserted the meat thermometer, it only registered 120 degrees. I managed to salvage dinner by reheating the oven to 500 and cooking the meat for another 40 minutes. It was still somewhat juicy and tender. I'd like to try it again if I can get some suggestions on cooking it right the next time.
