I like to eat. I've been active at it all my life, 57 years. My Grandmother, Mother and Father were all good cooks.
I'm a musician and own my own home recording studio. I'm currently about halfway finished with my first CD.
My favorite things to cook
I like to cook Amercian Country. Soups, Stews, Cassaroles etc.
I bake Breads, Cakes etc.
About anything I take a hankering to eat, I cook.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The only ritual holiday baking I do is Old Fashion German Gingerbread houses. Totally hand made, editable and the candy and frosting weights more than the Gingerbread it took to build it.
I start in September and by early December I have between 25 to 40 Gingerbread houses. I give them away to people I don't know who impressed me in ways of kindness and honesty, usually business' people I've met here and there.
My cooking triumphs
I was a student at a Baking College in the 1980s and volunteered to make a project for Chirstmas. A Gingerbread Castle. It had a draw bridge, Turrets, Walls, Buildings, just like a Castle, and 100% edible, except for the plywood base. The Castle was about four foot square and three and a half feet high at the tallest turret.
My cooking tragedies
One comes to mind when I was a line cook in an ItalianAmerican resturant. The special on this particular evening was to be Spaghetti.
For some reason, we became extreamly busy in the late afternoon. So busy in fact I forgot the sauce that was simmering on the back burner in another isle of the kitchen. When the rush ended, I remembered my sauce. I rushed back to find that the sauce at the bottom of the pan had scorched.
I tasted it and it was terrible.
At that moment I called the dishwasher over to help me dump it.
He wanted to know happened. I told him. Fortuneatly I didn't stir the pot very much. Only a little.
The dishwasher saved the sauce, by dipping out the top 23s of the five gallons in the pot.
He said to call it BBQ Spaghetti Sauce, which we sold as the special that evening for supper.
Over the following several months, people who tried it would ask when were were having it again.
I goofed, but the dishwasher saved the day.
