About this Cook
The Chowdah Chicks are a mother/daughter cooking team and cheerleading squad specifically for one very special autistic young man. We use cooking and humor to help my son feel more comfortable in social settings. We love cooking and never stop looking for new foods to try or new cooking technique's to learn including making our own cheese! Update! Because of how much fun we've been having, the Chowdah Chick's have become contagious and now other members of our family are joining in the fun. Here's a look at who's contributing to this recipe book: Joy (aka TheQueen) - The matriarch of our family and one amazing cook. Jacqui (aka Crypticgrrl) - The original chowdah chick who started this disaster in the first place. Scott (aka Rhi) - My son and the genius behind some of our cooking experiments. Dan (aka Tygoth) - My brother who cooks like a pro but doesn't know it. Candi (aka Candikane) - My sister-in-law who comes up with the most evil desserts evah!!
My favorite things to cook
I really don't have one specific thing that I love to cook but my family has one favorite they insist "I" cook for them; New England Clam Chowder. I do love cooking international foods and anything old fashioned. My mother and I have cookbooks that were kept in our family for more than 6 generations so we have a lot of "old school" recipes we like to make. One of our cookbooks is all medieval recipes so when we say old school, we're not kidding!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Cooking helped my family in a very special way. My son is autistic and has Asperger's Syndrome. Asperger kids will obsess about a favorite subject and it becomes their primary focus; my son's obsession has always been cooking and computers. When he was at his most withdrawn from the world, we could always pull him out of his shell a little bit at a time by bringing him into the kitchen and cooking a meal together. Cooking became our way of communicating as a family so I have a special fondness for it that goes beyond the love of food.
