Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2012
No cinnamon?!? It's considered to be a major crime in my family to make an apple pie with no cinnamon therefore I did add it. We also thought it was too sweet and we didn't like the texture of the apples. I will try this recipe again and try a different apple and less sugar, hoping that less sugar won't change the liquid consistency. My husband thinks it should have lemon juice added. We liked how the pastry turned out with the sugar/water poured over top. That was a nice change but this recipe needs some changes before it's considered a winner with my family. I will try it again but my husband and I are still debating what changes to make so it's more to our liking. Jan 5/13 update. Used spartan apples, same amount of sugar but used fresh lemon juice instead of water. A much better flavor. Also, I agree with Julie when she says that people are making major changes then giving the recipe five stars. This is not a five star recipe, the changes are.

Crusty Cornbread

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2012
This bread is very light, great texture and a nice crispy crust but the cornmeal is much too crunchy, it's not cooked. I will make this terrific bread again but because we prefer cornmeal cooked I will soften the cornmeal first. I think if I soak the cornmeal in the warm water for a bit, re-heat the water/cornmeal mixture before putting it in the bread machine the results should be a "no crunch" cornmeal - I hope. I'm sure more water will be required if the cornmeal is soaked.

Brandied Candied Sweet Potatoes

The only brandy I had was orange brandy. It was fabulous. I will be making this again for sure and will probably use the orange brandy again. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Cheesy Potato Pancakes

Reviewed: Sep. 23, 2012
Good recipe. My husband said "save this recipe, these are really good". This is easy to adapt to personal tastes or to ingredients on hand. I didn't add bacon or onion salt and used all cheddar since I didn't have any Parmesan. The first batch were not cooked long enough so they were gooey on the inside, the second batch I turned the heat down a bit and cooked them longer and they were perfect. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I will definitely be making these again.

Pre-Packaged Smoothies

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2012
This is a great idea. You can throw anything you want into the freezer bag and have it ready for the blender. Or just make it simple like frozen yogurt, frozen strawberries and one fresh apple. Tried that today, it was excellent. Thanks for the recipe.

Yummy Sweet Potato Casserole

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
Excellent. Possibly a bit too sweet but not enough to reduce the rating. I did use brown sugar instead of white. Next time I will try it with a bit of concentrated oranged juice. Or maybe some cinnamon? Thanks for submitting this recipe. It was enjoyed by all.

Drop Nut Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2011
These cookies are a five star cookie but I would suggest not adding nutmeg. I added just 1/4 tsp and the flavor was ....strange, for lack of a better word, which we blamed on the nutmeg. So follow the recipe as written and you will have a great cookie.

Seafood And Cabbage Salad

Very good salad. We don't like imitation crab so I used shrimp and it was very tasty. This recipe will go into my recipe box. Thanks for sharing, Wilma.

Lemon Loaf

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
What a great loaf. I made a few changes - not because the recipe needed it - but because we like a tart lemon flavour. I used only 1 1/2 tsp of lemon peel but added 1 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice. I also added 1/2 cup dried cranberries to make us feel like we are eating healthy. Baked for 55 min and it was almost too long. I should have reduced the milk by 1 tbsp to compensate for the tbsp of lemon juice because my cranberries sunk a bit. But we are still enjoying the loaf. Thanks for the recipe. I will make this again.

Apple Cake I

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2010
This is a great recipe as is. But I did make some changes, not because it needed it but to suit our personal tastes. I cut the oil in half as others suggested, used 1 cup brown sugar and 1/3 cup white, increased cinnamon to 3 tsp and added 1 tsp nutmeg. Someone mentioned that the cake gets soggy quickly so to prevent that we left it uncovered - problem solved. I will make this cake again.

Healthy Banana Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2010
This is a very different cookie, so different it's hard to rate. If you want healthy this is it but we thought the banana taste was a bit overwhelming. Also, it needed something more but we are not too sure what. Maybe a bit of sugar? Or keeping it healthy a bit of honey? It's a recipe worth trying but jazz it up a bit.

Crab and Pea Salad

Reviewed: Nov. 11, 2010
This recipe was ok. I can only give it three stars because of the imitation crab. We were not crazy about the taste. I made the mistake of thinking that the other ingredients would disguise the imitation flavor but it didn't. I may try it again but with real crab. I think using real crab would make it a 4, even 5 star recipe.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2010
WOW. These are great. I have made them a few times and have served them to confirmed brussel sprout haters and they went back for seconds. The last time I made them I followed the suggestion and used a higher temperture and shorter cooking time. Thanks for the tip - the house didn't get so smelly.

Never, Never Fail Pie Pastry

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2010
We did not like this recipe at all. After many years of using the same never fail pie pastry recipe I decided to compare mine to another "never fail pastry". It didn't occur to me until after the pastry was made that the ratio of lard and flour is wrong. I didn't check but I think that most good pastry recipes on this site have a ratio of 3 parts flour and 2 parts lard. This recipe is 2:1. With a ratio like that you end up with a gooey mess that tastes like lard when baked. It did turn out flaky so I gave it 2 stars for that but it tasted awful. I chilled this pastry overnight and still had problems. As i was working with it I kept drawing in a lot of flour and even then I had to piece it together in the pan. If you are going to use this recipe I would suggest you add at least another 3/4 c.flour to the recipe. By adding the flour right away at least you will have control of how much flour you are using. I will continue to use my own never fail pie pastry recipe.

Molasses Sugar Cookies II

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2010
They bake nice and look nice but you have to really like molasses and cloves to like these cookies. My husband couldn't even finish one cookie. I tried to acquire a taste for them but no luck. I let a couple of friends taste them hoping I could give them away. Also no luck so I'm sorry to say that they are now in the garbage.

Black Magic Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2010
Great cake. Light, moist and not too rich. Will make again but will try with brown sugar. Oct 23/11 Update - I have made this cake several times now and all my guests love it. It is my husband's favorite cake. It is a dark chocolate lovers dream. The negative reviews are probably from people that prefer milk chocolate. I can't think of any other reason that someone wouldn't love this cake. Also, white or brown sugar - doesn't matter - both are great.

Wow! Great cookies. You can add almost anything to the basic recipe. Because I don't like things too sweet I measured the br.sugar loose and reduced the white sugar by 1/4 cup. This recipe is a keeper. Thanks Melissa.
