I'm an enthusiastic amateur who dreams of culinary school someday...maybe in retirement? I love taking classic recipes and making them my own. I like to take risks in my cooking, and win or lose, I always learn something.
My favorite things to cook
I love seasonal cooking and am lucky enough to live in a part of the country where we experience all 4. During the cold, snowy winter months, I love to cook beef stew, lasagna with spicy turkey sausage, caesar salad, and red velvet cupcakes. Spring is about asparagus, spring veg risotto and pasta with broccoli and garlic. Summer brings out my passion for garden tomatoes in many shapes and forms, and autumn is football time for us, with chili, French onion soup and something called "meat pie" that I learned from my mother.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I really enjoy both styles of family cooking in my home - the "all in" kind where everyone in my family is involved and doing something, and conversely, the kind where everyone is watching the game or a movie, and I'm alone in the kitchen.
My cooking triumphs
Mastering a perfect roast chicken, apple pie with cheddar crust and discovering what a small amount of ground black pepper can do for a sweet/savory, and decorating the best holiday cupcakes in the 3rd grade!
My cooking tragedies
Too many to mention - ugh. It's not how you fail, but how you recover :)
