My favorite family cooking traditions
For as long as I can remember, my mom and I have spent the holidays in the kitchen. I absolutely can't wait for the holidays! We spend months planning and hours preparing the holiday meals. I love the smells of the holidays-- spices, breads, buttered rum... it's so warm and comfortable.
My cooking triumphs
I guess the greatest triumph was hosting my first holiday. It was mostly successful. I tried "non-traditional" recipes and everything went well. In fact, those "non-traditional" recipes have become our new traditions!
My cooking tragedies
In reference to the above, I overloaded my oven and ended up burning the bottom of two casseroles. I had to take them out of the pan, leaving the burn on the bottom, and serve them jumbled in a bowl. I don't think people noticed, but I was stressed!

Italian Teething Cookies
This recipe is great. However, to avoid giving my baby eggs, I used a vegan egg substitute. You use 1 tablespoon of flax seed meal and 3 tablespoons of water per egg. Boil it and it makes slimy, egg-like substance. It worked great! The cookies were tough and didn't break off into my son's mouth. He loved them!

Ibby's Pumpkin Mushroom Stuffing
In spite of my mother's doubt when I made this for the first holiday I hosted, this is our new "tradition". It has replaced the cornbread stuffing I grew up on. I always get raised eyebrows when I tell people what I've made, but there is never any left-overs. I make it as the recipe says, but I have used dried herbs instead of fresh and just regular sliced mushrooms to save money. It is just as delicious. It is an awesome recipe and I am sure that I will make it for many years to come!

Green Bean Bundles
Believe it or not, this recipe has replaced our traditional green bean casserole for holidays. We have made them for every holiday for the last 3 years. They are awesome! Thanks so much for the recipe!
