I agree- butter instead of shortening, handle the dough as little as possible, pat, don't roll, and leave it pretty thick. One more good hint- use a really sharp cutter, not a cup or anything that will squish your edges together. a small tin can with sharp edges works great. They'll rise better.
I leave out the sugar and add chopped ham and cheese for a breakfast version, or add finely chopped sundried tomatoes and some rosemary or other herb to go with soups.
