Valentine's Day originally was simply the date that birds began to choose their mates.  Pure and Simple.  
Back in September these two doves showed up on our porch for 1 week and 1 day.  Wouldn't it be nice if they showed up this Thursday?

The first reference in print to Valentine's Day is found in Geoffrey Chaucer's The parlement of foules [The Parliament of Fowls], circa 1381:

"For this was on seynt Volantynys day Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make."

(For this was Saint Valentine's day, when every bird of every kind comes to this place to choose his mate.)

I was searching the Allrecipes site for 

heart-shaped recipes (click HERE for the link).

Heart-shaped muffins and fruit will be awaiting the teachers and staff at my grandson's preschool Thursday morning before I go to work.

I had two white doves picking seeds on the snow covered ground from the feeder in my backyard the other day. They are so sweet and gentle. They had to be hungry. By the time I ran to get my camera some magpies had chased them off. I know they'll be back - maybe Thursday? For now I am enjoying the swarms of chickadees. Thanks so much for reminding us of Saint Valentine.
