Friends in the AiR - A Tribute to AR Peeps

Friends in the AiR... no that is not a typo.  It is a heartfelt phrase coined by our own Mike Harvey.  He created this poem (from a previous blog) to express his feelings about you - yes, you... all the wonderful peeps here on AR.
... Friends in the AiR
They hold out their hearts to touch yours
And make offerings of friendship
To make one person feel welcome
Another to feel encouraged
Yet another to find direction.
Their words reach across nations
Regardless of peace or strife
These friends in the air stand strong
For their friends whose lives they share
To comfort, to laugh, to care, to weep.
Perhaps, not in body do they come,
Although they certainly have,
But in the bonds of friendship they travel
And in the bounds of caring they stay
These friends in the air shall prevail.
Friends in the air... Thank you!
Friends in the air... God bless you!
As a cancer survivor, Mike has been very passionate in his support of the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life.  Last year, we joined our team captain in a Relay for Life in Kearney, MO that coincided with Cat Hill's Midwest Round-up.  This year some of the same faces as well as some new joined together as your Friends in the AiR Relay for Life team in Liberty, MO the evening before Cat Hill's Midwest Round-up. This year's relay was dedicated to our own Dogfish Head who was battling cancer.  Sadly, she passed away the following week.  Our sympathy goes out to all who "knew" her.

Since our team came from all across the country (Michigan, Illinois, Kansas and California), we arrived for the opening ceremony and left at the lighting of the luminaries.  Many of you sponsored luminaries in support of Dogfish Head, while others sponsored luminaries for other friends and loved ones.  Mike thought it important to show the luminaries and he very generously provided himself (I mean his shirt) as a backdrop.

Our Friends in the AiR Relay for Life Team...Gammaray (xraybarb), Mrs. Mike (Linda), Magnolia Blossom, Mike Harvey, and MiBeingMi.

Thanks to the generosity of our fellow AR peeps, our team raised over $1,300!  Thank you for your support.
We are all Friends in the AiR, whether you've tried someone's recipe, chitchatted back and forth on the Buzz, posted on blogs, exchanged Christmas cards, emails or phone calls.  And if you've had the opportunity to meet a fellow AR peep...well, you are very lucky indeed.  I consider myself so incredibly fortunate, it brings tears to my eyes.
Below are the sponsored luminaries.  I believe Dogfish Head (a/k/a Allison) had 6 luminaries, so a pic was taken for both names.  Should anyone wish a better copy of any of these "faux toes", please email me at  I believe if you click on the photo, it should enlarge for easier viewing.

I know the "afterglow" will last a long time. How fabulous that you all were able to get together for such a great cause! The pictures are the next best thing to being there. Thanks and best wishes to all!

Thanks Bibi, it is a special time.

Just tears.....What a wonderful thing.
Jul. 1, 2013 9:06 pm
This brought tears and goose bumps. Thanks to all who participated. My childhood friend Maureen is in the final stages of her battle and will soon be gone from the earth. Donta' died the week of the relay. Thankfully our Donald is doing well. I never take that lightly. I know we are so lucky for remission. I wish everyone courage and success in beating this horrid disease. I thank all who help them battle cancer. What an amazing community we have here in the "air". Love to you all and warmest aloha.

Thank you for this blog. It comes at just the right time. My niece lost her battle today. We must continue the fight for prevention and a CURE. Blessings to those who know the pain of losing someone they love.

I've been to one of these and it's a spectacular memory to behold. I'm thankful for your caring. Very special blog.

Thanks for checking in Toni Jo.
Jul. 1, 2013 9:35 pm
Julie, we talked about this the other day. How sad that this horrible disease has affected so many of our friends and family that it's hard to remember each and every one.
Jul. 1, 2013 9:36 pm
BN, my heart just aches for you and your family.
Jul. 1, 2013 9:37 pm
Marianne, it is a very special event, isn't it? Particularly the beginning ceremony and the survivor's lap. Those that have fought the battle and are winning! Next are the caregivers lap. Where would the survivors be without their caregivers?
Jul. 1, 2013 9:38 pm
Hugs right back to you Cindy Lou!
Jul. 1, 2013 10:05 pm
It was an honor to get to walk with my Friends in the AiR at this special event!
Jul. 1, 2013 10:09 pm
So glad you could make it. Loved being your PIC (partner in crime)! I will be posting another blog about the round-up. Didn't want to take away from the relay. First I have to recover from posting all these pics, LOL.

Beautiful Lora, just beautiful.
Jul. 1, 2013 10:55 pm
Thank you all! How sad we have so many suffering from some form of cancer. Our friends in the Air are absolutely amazing people and I am thankful to "know" all of you.

Beautiful and touching, now I will go have a good cry. You people are amazing.
Jul. 2, 2013 3:54 am
Very thoughtful and inspiring to remember such a long list of loved ones. Beautiful blog and thank you to Mike and everyone for their dedication to this cause. Thank you, Mags!

BSM, we are all so fortunate to have "met" each other.
Jul. 2, 2013 4:55 am
Manella, the peeps here are the best!
Jul. 2, 2013 5:00 am
Mickdee, I had taken pics of the luminaries in groups of two on the ground. Mike came up with the idea of holding them against the Relay's logo. Thank goodness for point and shoot.
Jul. 2, 2013 5:09 am
Lovely blog, Magnolia Blossom. Is there anyone who has not been affected by this disease in some way. The Friends in the AiR are the best at being there for each other!
Jul. 2, 2013 6:59 am
Magnolia Blossom, what a great tribute for those who suffer from cancer. I think it is wonderful all the AIR Peeps put so much effort into raising the money and walking for a great cause.
Jul. 2, 2013 7:11 am
The Relay for Life is a very emotional, yet wonderful, event for anyone that has been affected by cancer. Those who have (miraculously) not been affected by cancer face it's reality at the event. It is up to everybody to take care of themselves with semi annual check ups with their primary care doctor and a dermatologist and to monitor every inch of their body in the interim. Also, it is everyone's responsibility to remind each other to do the same. ... Thank you for posting this, Magnolia Blossom. Your support and participation in the R4L is very much appreciated.

I've been sitting here for awhile trying to express into words how I feel right now and it finally dawned on my why I'm having such difficulty. I'm a mixed bag of emotions - PROUD - to have participated in this great event in honor of fellow peeps - MAD - that this terrible disease has robbed so many of us - SAD - to hear of the very recent passing of Allison and Katherine - HAPPY - to be a part of this awesome community! and THANKFUL to have had the opportunity to meet some wonderful people, such as yourself, Magnolia Blossom! It's no wonder I'm sitting hear crying! Great blog, my friend!
Jul. 2, 2013 7:49 am
*here* - not hear - Geesh...
Jul. 2, 2013 7:54 am
Fantastic blog MB!! A Huge THANK YOU to the whole framily for walking to Eradicate such a Terrible, horrible, mind boggling disease that has no rhyme or reason for even existing! !
Jul. 2, 2013 9:02 am
Magnolia, dear friend thank you for a beautiful blog. I am like Mi right now. Just finished opening the mail to find a gift from Cat. So thrilled I wanna dance. Then I remember to come and read your blog. I am PROUD to have met several peeps and know others here in their words, everyone so supportive. MAD that this disease has caused so much pain for those affected and effected. SAD so sad to hear about Katherine this morning and Allison last week. THANKFUL to call myself a survivor as LCIS was caught before becoming breast cancer. Mike, thank you for a wonderful poem. Gonna go have a good cry now. Oh, your butterfly photo hangs proudly on the fridge now - holding AR recipes of course!
Jul. 2, 2013 9:55 am
I'm with Sheila..... Always a basket case of emotions about fund raising events to find a cure for this dread disease! I get so mad that it is indiscriminate in choosing its victims, grateful for the many wonderful folks who make contributions to help beat it to death and eradicate it from this earth, sad for those who fight so courageously and still loose their battle, happy for those in remission, (my precious Lisa just celebrated her 4th year in April) and determined to continue to help in any way I can to promote prevention! I love your respectful and sincere blog MB! You are one of the kindest, giving and selfless people I know! Thank you for highlighting the event AND the luminaries. I am proud to be a part of this wonderful community of Friends In The AiR!!!
Jul. 2, 2013 5:08 pm
Thanks Cat. We do stick like glue, don't we?
Jul. 2, 2013 5:10 pm
Lela, it's a big thanks to Mike for his coordination of the team.
Jul. 2, 2013 5:12 pm
Mike, you have brought the painful subject of cancer to the forefront with your blogs, relays, and gentle, but forceful reminders to get checked out regularly. Thank YOU...
Jul. 2, 2013 5:15 pm
Oh man...I started reading Mi's comment and those that followed right before lunch. No, I'm fine. Must be allergies. Sniff... Very touching. Thank you for the great times and being a friend.
Jul. 2, 2013 5:17 pm
Thank you Pattycakes for your support. So glad you and DH were able to come to the roundup.
Jul. 2, 2013 5:20 pm
Lucky Noodles, it's been a pleasure to get to know you. How very brave of you to confront the disease head on and take preventive measures. (More sniffles...)
Jul. 2, 2013 5:22 pm
Candice, just pass the tissues. Yes, we all need to celebrate the success stories. You were very much on our minds at the relay.
Jul. 2, 2013 5:26 pm
Jul. 3, 2013 4:53 am
You folks are awesome.
Jul. 3, 2013 6:43 am
As others, this touches a chord with me. My husband is in remission from Stage 4 cancer, all started by melanoma (and he is not a sun worshiper). It ended up in the lymph system and bone marrow. The treatment almost killed him and left him crippled with nerve damage and brain dysfunction. Kudos to all of you who get out there to raise money and awareness for this horrid disease. God bless you all for your heroism, the fighters, the survivors, and the ones battling for a cure. Thank you for the blog and sharing this wonderful get-together of fellowship. AR peeps are the best!
Jul. 3, 2013 9:58 am
Cancer is such a terrible disease. My first encounter was when I was in elementary school, my Dad had a recurrence. After a long battle, he succumbed, some Aunts had it, then my Sister, then me. I was so scared. The Buzz wrapped around me & really helped-met some of the great gals in So CA. I'm doing OK now, have lost more friends to it, the pain cancer causes never seems to end. There has been some progress made, but so much more is needed. So glad so many of you were able to participate in this .
Jul. 3, 2013 10:02 am
Thank you party chef!
Jul. 3, 2013 10:03 am
Cookin'Cyn - Best of luck to your husband and keeping him in remission. Thanks for stopping in!
Jul. 3, 2013 10:04 am
Glad to hear you are doing well. AR peeps are very supportive and I'm glad you found friends here to help you through it.
Jul. 3, 2013 11:47 am
Now you have me suffering from allergies, Mags! I honestly don't think I would know what to do without you. Thanks for putting up with me :) and again thanks for this lovely blog and its comments.
Jul. 3, 2013 7:02 pm
I think it is very important to say that we had help at AR, also. I don't know how many because I wasn't able to keep tabs at AR this year. How many thank yous and shout out of recognition? I can think of four but I know I'm probably missing somebody important. Baking Nana, Jennifer Baker, Julie McCuiston, Big Shots Mom. Anybody else please post your name here. I regret that I couldn't keep up to recognize everybody.
Jul. 3, 2013 7:44 pm
Mr. Mike, you organized it and the cheerleaders cheered you on :) I say thanks to you for leading! And thanks to everyone who helped raise money for the fight!!
Jul. 4, 2013 8:40 am
Cat, the allergies are just terrible, aren't they? Best thing I ever did was make that long drive in the dark in the rain. Big hug...
Jul. 4, 2013 8:42 am
Mike is so right, huge thanks to all the peeps who promoted the walk here and on Facebook.
Jul. 4, 2013 8:43 am
