It's All About the Peeps

Peeps.  What are peeps?  AR peeps.  The people that congregate here to look for recipes, share recipes and foodie tips, chit chat on The Buzz, or post blogs about food, family or just life in general.

I've been using recipes from AR for years, back when there were individual "cookbooks" that you selected from and then searched for your recipes, and I have no idea how long ago that was.

Not sure what caught my eye first, the Recipe Exchange (now The Buzz) or the blogs, but I certainly remember the first blog that I read.  A heart-wrenching blog from a man whose wife had a stroke.  Having never read a blog, I was stunned by this outpouring of personal trauma.  Quite frankly, I thought the wife was the member and that her husband was posting in her stead to let everyone know what happened.  I didn't realize that I would come to "know" gderr through his blogs and eventually figure out that he was the blogger and that his dear wife was referred to as "cooking challenged."  However, what impressed me the most was the flood of good wishes and prayers to someone in their time of need.  On a cooking website?

When checking on the Recipe Exchange, I became aware of familiar names that would pop up on a regular basis. Always offering a kind word, a recipe or a helpful hint for any who asked. The first AR peep I remember in such a way was Baking Nana.

I'm sure you all have your own stories about how you came to be on AR and most could probably say that they stumbled onto the site and heck, the name is easy to remember. But it's the peeps that keep me coming here.  And having the opportunity to meet some of these folks?  Truly the most wonderful memories.

First stop - Cat Hill's near Kansas City where the hostess with the mostest put on the first Midwest Round-up.  Next stop, Vegas Baby!  A wonderful get-together hosted by MauiGirl and getting to meet a whole slew of AR peeps.  It started a chain reaction by connecting with my Vegas roomie, Lady Sparkle.  Which led to an Indiana adventure (Thelma & Louise-style) with Sparkle Britches.  And the cycle continues.  Vegas next week, 3rd Annual Midwest Round-up in June with Mike Harvey & his lovely wife and Lady Sparkle coming to my house to then continue on to Kansas City.  There are other meet-ups scheduled around the country and if you have the opportunity to meet with any of these wonderful AR peeps, just DO IT!  Then you'll know why "It's All About the Peeps."

Oh, my gosh, Magnolia! I remember well when gderr first posted that trauma. And I remember when some got together to help out petey when we thought she might have an infection following knee surgery. And CindyLepp's CaringBridge posts. And then there was BevF. And Sharyl4. And the quilt. All those things--and many other health questions/answers. Oh, yes, And then there is FOOD, too! Oh, my goodness! We have so many memories tucked away in there, don't we?!
May 11, 2012 8:37 pm
Absolutely Marianne. Food brought everyone here, but life (food related or not) keeps us here.

I am fairly new here, so I do not have the memories that many of you do. But, what I do have from just about the first day, is the "family feeling" from everyone. It did not take me long to realize that even thought this is a food site; it is so much more than that. The reaching out to others whether it be a "congrats" or "prayers" just amazed me. It was my lucky day when I stumbled upon this site. I would like to thank all of you!
May 11, 2012 8:57 pm
Patty Cakes, I can't wait! Some of the stuff you mentioned was before my time, or at least before I become as aware of the site as I am now.
May 11, 2012 8:58 pm
misty - you're creating your own memories. That's the important thing. And with just a couple of keystrokes, you're part of the family too! Thanks for stopping in!
May 11, 2012 9:48 pm
Hi My name is sheila, and I'm new here. I don't know anyone here, but would like to chat with someone. When we first start out at a new site, everything looks confusing a new member please. Sheila
May 11, 2012 9:55 pm
Hi Sheila. The best place to start out is at "the buzz" Click on that category and then check out the Recipe Buzz. That is where you can generally find someone to chat with or ask a question. Sometimes you may have to post in the morning and then again perhaps in the evening if you are wanting suggestions or answers to questions. Blogs are generally for particular topics of the blogger's choosing and there's not always the immediate back & forth conversation. Either way, welcome to the site. Lots of friendly folks here!
May 12, 2012 4:35 am
My dear Magnolia! Once again, I find we are on the same page. I've been formulating a blog in my head about AR. I'll have to find a different (but similar) title because it certainly IS all about the peeps for me too! Sheila, if you come back and see this (and any other newbies) . . .this blog has some "basics" about "how to" work the Buzz. I can't wait to see you again!!! And meet Mike Harvey and Cindy L, and Cat Hill and MORE wonderful AR peeps from the MidWest! XOXOXO Most excellent blog my friend!
May 12, 2012 4:51 am
Magnolia-it is the helping nature of everyone here that draws me back to this site quite frequently. I have enjoyed the interaction as well as learning so much from so many of the AR peeps. To meet people face to face would be wonderful-you are so fortunate to be able to do so. I hope everyone shares their experiences from the Roundups here on the AR Blog.
May 12, 2012 5:13 am
Agree, Magnolia! There are great recipes on other sites, but the connections between cooks we find here are unmatched!
May 12, 2012 6:23 am
Wonderful blog! I've not only made some great meals. I do feel like family here with everyone being so helpful and supportive! And I have saved so much money. Baking Nana has changed my laundry forever as I'll never buy laundry soap again! I know how to store head lettuce that lasts more than a week. My family Christmas gifts were all AR recipes: Ranch Dry Mix, Onion Soup mix, Amaretto, Irish Cream, Bathroom cleaner, and of course the laundry soap. Mom called a few weeks ago, she used what I'd given her, loved it and told all her friends. She wanted the recipe to make herself a batch and give the recipe to her friends. This site is such a blessing for me, I cannot thank you all enough. Somedays the only people I speak with are my DH and in-laws. But somehow it is all okay when I drink my morning coffee and chat with the Peeps on Lisa's "What's for dinner" post.
May 12, 2012 6:49 am and I were drawn into AR at the same time. I had been using AllRecipes just for recipes and one very early morning GDerr's anguished blog caught my eye. I cried the whole time I read it. I even read it to my husband and we worried for both gderr and Claire. After that, I was hooked on AR and their wonderful community. I have gained so many friends and I don't know how I got by without them before :) You are all unique yet we all mesh so well. It is always like visiting with a dear old friend when I find all of you here or on the buzz and now Facebook. Like you, I enjoy visiting these groups and I look forward to traveling to meet many more in the years to come. Thanks again for sharing this story. Now come on down kid. See you next week XO

Magnolia, I too was drawn into the Exchange/buzz after finding Gary's blog, pretty much by accident, (I mentioned that in my blog too), and I've never turned back since. Wonder if Gary knows that while wearing his heart on his sleeve, he touched so many others and in fact changed our lives! Beautiful blog, my dear!
May 12, 2012 7:33 am
..all that has been said here speaks to me ...unconditional support is what the lovely people here provide to each other...that's what keeps me coming back...there are so many food and recipe websites but the difference here is the quality and caring people.....unconditionally . It's like the best family you could ask for....cheers to all. Great Blog MB
May 12, 2012 10:18 am
I would respond to each one of you individually, but you know what? You've all basically said the same thing, which is "It's All About the Peeps". It's no wonder we all have such a great connection with each other. Great minds think alike!
May 12, 2012 10:20 am
For those that I will be seeing soon, I absolutely can't wait. For those that I haven't met yet, a cyberspace hug for a new friend. And for those of us who are mothers, who have mothers, or who are remembering their mothers (which should cover all of us unless you were born under a cabbage leaf), have a wonderful Mother's Day!
May 12, 2012 10:49 am
Someone told me about Allrecipes and after clicking I got hooked! I've been on here for 3 years. I still find something new and interesting on AR and yes of course, I love the "buzz". To get to chat with people around the world. I do not think I'll ever leave AR! I do wish to meet some of the good cooks. I will have to make arrangements to attend the "round up".
May 12, 2012 10:55 am
Hi luv2cook! Come to a round-up or start your own! Thanks for stopping in.
May 12, 2012 11:17 am
What everyone above said times 10! I love this site and everyone on it. I've had nothing but possitive experiences here. I immediately felt welcomed by all the wonderful "AR Peeps!" I think you've put in writting what we all feel.... Love you Miss MB!
May 12, 2012 11:39 am
Aw man! You are so sweet. What a great blog. I think I landed on AR just before you & Sparkle Britches did. The AR Peeps all make this a good corner of my little world. :) Can't wait to see you again!
May 12, 2012 11:42 am
Speaking of AR peeps that I will be seeing soon... Can't wait to see Baking Nana in Vegas and Candice in Kansas City! Love ya!
May 12, 2012 1:33 pm
Looking forward to it Mike. I'm sure the luggage will give you enough elbow room.
May 12, 2012 2:00 pm
hi mags! what a great blog! yes, the 1st blog i wrote was titled, " i need your prayers" i still read the responses...i cry. i cried when i read this and comments left here. i got home very late and had to get this out to frinds here. i didn't have anyone here to talk to that late. my daughters and aging mother in law were not aware of how serious the stroke was and i felt i couldn't tell them that their mother and daughter may very well die. there were over 500 responses to my prayer request. i thought this was just a community of folks that wanted to know when to substitue this for that in a recipe.i want to thank everyone for holdind good thoughts for a person in amazing reaction. so many cards and suggestions kindly offered. truly a loving community. the cooking-challenged wife still has issues, probably for the rest of her life. but i still got that bed-hog! i wish i could meet all of ya. and mags, magnolias are blooming here on this page as well in my neighbor's yard. beatuiful!
May 12, 2012 3:00 pm
Thanks Gary. Blogs like yours, Mike Harvey's and others truly show people's love and compassion for their fellow man. Give that cooking-challenged bed "hawg" a big Mother's Day hug. (Note I'm getting the Southern lingo in there.)
May 13, 2012 6:16 am
I never left a comment before, but love AR, you all seem like such cool people. I get alot of great ideas for cooking, but also love the warm feeling I get when I read all of your blogs. I have been impressed that you all seem to really care about each other, even if some of you have never met. Baking Nana, WitchyWoman, gderr,Mike Harvey,Mauigirl,LadySparkle,Magnolia Blossom, You have all brightened my day on so many occassions. Thank you!!
May 13, 2012 8:03 am
I came across my favorite recipe of all on Allrecipes. It was easy to make and has only one ingredient! "Friendship", whether it be virtual or in person it's simply my all time favorite.
May 13, 2012 9:53 am made my day.....Thank you! XO
May 13, 2012 11:30 am
thunder - thanks for stopping in. And if you're on AR, well I guess that makes you cool too!
May 13, 2012 11:31 am
bd - gotta love those "simple" recipes.
May 13, 2012 8:51 pm
Hey Mags!!! You are one of my "heart beats" - - along with several others that have been so special - Baking Nana - Maui Girl - Petey - GDerr - when life hands you lemons, it is this group of special people on AR that will take those lemons and make lemonade (aid) and lemon pie and then they'll take the zest of those lemons and candy them and make them edible too - - thank you dear friends of AR - - I love you too!
May 13, 2012 10:48 pm
Hehe, luv2cook, if you only knew what I can do when life hands you lemons. Just ask Avon. I'll have to send her an email to check out the blog. Thank you to the 2nd luv2cook to stop in. Can't wait to see you in Vegas.
May 14, 2012 5:59 am
Wow! You did such a lovely job with this blog! I got my first AR recipe back in 2000. I blame petey with her "Turkey of a Leg" blog for hooking me on the blogs then WW's RV travels. I read gderr's blog and sat just typing & deleting a comment again and again because none of them seemed to mean what I felt for the man and his wife. I came in and started hanging around here about the time of that infamous quilt. Yes, indeed, the peeps here will help you with life's lemons and you are one of the best helpers ever, MB. I can't wait to see you all in 25 days!
May 14, 2012 7:04 am
Wow awesome blog and all the responses also. I too feel like you are all my personal friends. I feel like I could come to you guys with any problem I have whether it be about a recipe or about life in general. The first thing I do when I get to work in the mornings is to turn my computer on and check out AR buzz.I am usually late to the a party, but I enjoy all of the post and have learned so much about cooking even though I have been cooking for over 50 years. You guys are truly and extended part of my family!!
May 14, 2012 9:37 am
Woohoo! Hope to see you soon, one way or another. So much going on at my house right now. Great blog and so sweet! XOXO
May 14, 2012 10:16 am
Hi char - that's what is best about this site, we're all part of a big family!
May 14, 2012 10:17 am
Hey Cindyloo! Thanks for popping in. Still going to Cat Hill's?
May 14, 2012 11:48 am
Hi MB! I echo your's and all the peep's comments above me. Your 1st comment to Marianne sums it up best for me! I joined AR in 2006 and have been a committed (read addicted)follower ever since. Funny how the simple act of googling a recipe has brought me to meet (both in person and online)some most wonderful peeps! Looking forward to seeing you again, soon!

Thanks for the comments MBM! Hope to see you in Kansas City!

Hi Mary. I wasn't real familiar with BevF. You might post the question on the Recipe Buzz, particularly in the morning. There might be more folks out there that may know about her.

May 16, 2012 8:51 am
MB, what a great blog. The peeps kept me returning as well but lately it seems the party posts or chat posts have gone by the way side. I miss them. I know they were OT but there was always something "cooking" in them. I know people get busy, move to other sites, get pissy about something or whatever. Lately the Buzz has been mostly about real food so when I have time, I quickly cruise through the few posts and get real life things accomplished in a timely manner. Since finding the Buzz this is the first spring that I am on time and not feeling like I am 12 steps behind on everything. Hope you have a blast in Vegas.
May 16, 2012 8:51 am
Mary, I have not seen BevF on the buzz nor have I received any emails from her for a long time. I hope all is well with her.
May 16, 2012 10:04 pm
Thanks RNG, we'll have a great time. Thanks for popping in. And I don't think I've heard about BevF, so I didn't want to give Mary any false info.
