Your Recipe Box or Mine

OK, raise your hands out there.  Do you copy multiple recipes from when someone else requests a recipe?  Like multiple cookie recipes?

I checked the beginning of my recipe box because mis7up has this idea for a blog that has you going to your very first recipe in your box that you haven't made before, making it, reviewing & photographing the results, and emailing to mis7up for posting in a fun blog.  This blog idea sounds interesting, so I selected my recipe.  The blog sounds like a weekly event so I looked ahead to the next several recipes.  What do I find?  Several cookie recipes in a row.  Then about 5 very tasty martini recipes, obviously from a request for recipes post from someone else.  If I posted one of those martini recipes each week, everyone would think I have a drinking problem.  Who am I kidding?  I still have wine coolers in the fridge that are a year old, unopened bottles of liquor from a party 3 years ago, and quite frankly, would probably never make a martini for myself and my friends like their beer more than fruity drinks.

I am trying to eat healthier, so I am avoiding the cheesecake recipe that sounds delish, the cookie recipes, and the martinis.  So my first recipe selected is Bacon Macaroni Salad.  Sounds incredibly healthy, doesn't it?  I'll have to adjust that one using healthier ingredients/alternatives.

The Soft Christmas Cookie recipe might be OK.  DH likes soft cookies and I can just avoid them.

Do you find your recipe box full of recipes that you now believe you would probably never make?  I deleted some that I'm not even sure why they were ever in there in the first place.

What is the status of YOUR recipe box?

I recently did a bit of a purge of my recipe box and deleted a few recipes I had no idea why they were in there in the first place... there's lots others that I probably will never make either but for the time being I am hanging on to them 'just in case'!

I agree - miss7up's blog idea really got me giving a good hard look at my RB. I am constantly adding, deleting and moving (re-organizing). I have 1450 recipes (YIKES!!) and I've been saving since 2003. I will never make them all, but its so fun to know they are there if I need them ;] I'm a confimed fabricholic too but I'm trying to work on that as well. Its all good!

Now you got me wondering......better clean out the recipe box. BTW You've got to admit that keeping virtual recipes organized is a he!! of a lot easier than the old paper ones.

HA! I ended up doing the same thing when mis7up posted and was scratching my head about the addition of some recipes in my box. "Why in the world did I save that?" I believe some were saved by an alternate personality I had no idea co-existed in me. At any rate, I am deleting some and determing to do better w/ organizing folders. Sgih......

I cleaned out the RB last week, had several recipes in there as trial recipes for Recipe Group that never got made, also some recipes were added and I can't remember why-maybe for the name just to play with requests on the Buzz. When I go through a phase, I will add many ethnic recipes at one time or chocolate all at once. I am a binger.

Oh thanks! Now I have another chore! LOLOLOL! Not a clue what's in the recipe box. I confess I save recipes cause I think they're great or for inspiration and then...... Now I have to go look at what is the first. I know what the last is-Sarah Jo's fried chicken recipe to make for my "when did he grow up" child's birthday dinner. And I am making it this weekend :)

I'm a little obsessive about keeping mine cleaned out...and I don't add a recipe unless I'm practically certain I'm going to make it in the next week or two. The only real exception to that is cupcake/frosting recipes. I have several of those I haven't tried yet, but will certainly get to them eventually. I also categorize my recipes either when I save them or soon after. I hate clutter, even if it's virtual clutter.

Well I'm another hunter/ gatherer of recipes and periodically go through and purge. Some of them have me scratching my head too and wondering whatever possessed me to save that? Others, I know exactly why I've saved but haven't made.....YET! Not long ago, I did clean out my RB, and made a discovery that I wasn't happy with. Did you know that anytime you do something with your recipes like move them to a file, or review, or anything at all it resaves it to the current date? I've been saving recipes for a really long time, much longer than I've been a member here, but I have no idea what my first recipe saved is since all the dates are jumbled. I'm one that likes to look back on things and mark time by what I was apparently in the mood for on a certain day. Can't really do that now unless you save, categorize, and make and review all on the same day.

Thanks for your comments everyone. I have to go through that recipe box and weed out. Too many recipes that will never be made. Aaaannd I have to tackle the expandable files that have recipes yanked out of magazines. At least I don't save the entire magazine, they'd be stacked to the ceiling!

What a great topic! I must confess, when I first started saving recipes, there was a little bit of a learning curve for me. I saved, but didn't place in folders. They all remained uncategorized for months. Finally, I took the time to file them all in folders. Then I over-filed in multiple folders. Now, I've got real mess and need to delete repeated recipes from several folders. I'll have to take a day to get it all straightened out. But, as someone said above, Better to have a "Virtual" mess rather than a paper one.

I really am not a pack rat, but my recipe box might suggest differently. In my head I must be a superstar cake decorator because the majority of my saves are cake decorating related. In reality, I am not, and I have little occasion to make and decorate cakes (tho I do have a pretty strong sweet tooth). Others that I have not made are recipes that appeal to my tastes, but I would not normally put on the dinner table for my family. I LOVE to organize/edit, so have many folders and am always organizing my RB. As Avon says, it creates problems with dates saved. It does this when you edit/add to your personal recipes as well, or add notes to any other recipe. I know the very first recipe I saved three years ago (and I've made it!) but it shows the date I added it to it's current folder this year. I made a promise to myself at the beginning of the year to not save any new recipes, to stick to making what is already in my RB, and to cull the herd. Doing good so far, but it's tempting when I come across a good request on the buzz.

Hi Candice & CC! I've got several folders in my recipe box too and not all of my recipes are appropriately filed yet.

I finally created a cookie folder and a banana folder. I thought that was progress. I do like the idea of making the 1st untried recipe. Good idea!

Hi MB! My time on AR is pretty limited these days, so I want to thank Cat Hill for referencing your blog in a recent post. Cat Hill, if you see this...thanks! Hope everything is going well for each of you and I think of you both often. I could have written ElCay's post above. I'm a real stickler about my recipe box. I've been an AR member for years but I only have 160 recipes saved. I've recently started a new system where I force myself to make at least one recipe each week from each of my categories that I have not yet made. It's working pretty well so far and I've recently found some amazing new recipes.

You're welcome Mi Being Mi! I just happened to see your post and thought you might like to read MB's blog :)MB, I went through my recipe box and boy what a surprise. My first recipe in my box is for prime rib and some I have no idea why I saved. I wouldn't have looked if not for your blog so thanks!

I think I'll keep my virtual recipe box intact for now. When we downsized to a townhouse I had to give away over 100 cookbooks. I still have more cookbooks and recipes than I could make in a thousand lifetime. The allrecipes gives me my recipe obsession kick with out taking up space at home. It is fund seeing what kind of recipe searches I've been on a different stages of my my life.
