My name is Karla and i'm 24. I'm married with two kids. I got married very young, when my husband got out of USMC bootcamp, we just got married and hit the ground running. I got used to comming home from school and having dinner ready, my husband is a good man, and i make sure he eats well. I go to a Cal State University, and I'm a part-time receptionist. I am black and mexican, so my culture (and cooking style) is very diverse and exciting!
My favorite things to cook
I like to make black eyed peas with hamhocks, greens with salted pork (but i rather use hamhocks), fried chicken, roast beef w/ a slow cooker, empanadas, mole, my favorite (as well as everyone elses) my enchiladas, and much more.
My favorite family cooking traditions
On sundays my dad's family has family dinners so I make black eyed peas with hamhocks, or I bring the corn bread, my aunts and grandma do the "real cooking", but i watch alot. With my mom and husbands family, they usually make mole, or or make carne asada, everyone likes my rice, my secret is broth (instead of water) & boullion cubes, christmas time of tamales, I can't name everything.
My cooking triumphs
I made enchiladas for my husband and his M.Sgt one night, and he was impressed, he even said I put his ex-wife's to shame. Two months later my husband called me asking if I could make some for the M.sgt's birthday party on base, for the 52 guys in his unit, my husband begged me, I was honered but pissed! I had 3 other wives and 2 of my cousins to help, 22 trays and $213 later, we got it done and everyone loved them!!
My cooking tragedies
My first time making tamales and peach cobbler by myself. My tamales were rubbery and smelled burned.
When I made peach cobbler, the crust on top burned, and the peaches carmalized. The pan was huge and not that many peaches. My auntie told me to next time leave it up to the big dogs, I will conquer! :p
