My hub & daughter. Go Gators!
About this Cook
I'm married 23 years, have 2 kids - a daughter 22, and a son, 17. My daughter is in college and VP of her sororiety. My son is autistic and has been hometaught (by me with help from hub too) since he was 5. We live in South Florida and love to do lots of different things. My husband and I enjoy Latin ballroom and club style dancing, and we also like boating, fishing, dining out and wine collecting. Both my husband and me love to cook and really enjoy exploring new types of foods, spice combinations, methods - you name it!
My favorite things to cook
I love roasts more than anything, but I also making soups and I love to bake. My husband is the grill expert and sauce-maker in the house! My speciality is making things on the fly. I love to improvise and just go with the flow. I once made a savory rice pudding using a blend of different rices (brown, wild, red & jasmine) and used milk with some homemade chicken broth added, eggs, cornstarch, fresh herbs and mushrooms, onions, scallions. It baked nicely, and had a consistency like most any rice pudding, except it was a side dish to a roast lamb. It's one of my favorites!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Well, number one has to be what we do most and that's putting on the music in the breakfast room, pouring a glass of wine and cooking together. Taking dinner outside and watching the sunset over the Savannah is like our own bit of Heaven on Earth! Second to that, is Thanksgiving Day. It's something I wait for all year! I do some things in advance, baking and such, but that morning it's always busy-in-the-kitchen! I make a large pot of soup that I keep on a warming tray, and everyone comes in out and of the kitchen taking a bowl of soup and helping and chatting. As a backdrop to all of this is that I usually have the Macy's Day Parade playing on TV. I just love it!
My cooking triumphs
In my usualy on-the-fly style, I made a few things that really came out great. Savory rice pudding, coconut and pineapple cake, and baby lamp chops broiled with a rub I made: EVO, fresh garlic, rosemary, parsley, sea salt, fresh black pepper, fresh lemon juice.
My cooking tragedies
Oh boy. We've all had them! When I was a kid I baked this batch of what were supposed to be soft molasses cookies. But, I left them in the oven too long at too high a temp. By the time they cooled, they were pretty much rock-hard. I left the kitchen in tears only to come back and find my two (much older mind you) brothers player table hockey with one of them as the puck, and using wooden spoons as hockey sticks! I started laughing because at least the cookies went to some good use!
