Heloise's Toffee Cookies

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2003
This recipe was very disappointing. The consistency of the dough was very sticky and could not be rolled into logs like the recipe suggested - not even after chilling it for hours. I ended up just dropping the dough by spoonfuls (a horrible process with the sticky dough) onto cookie sheets. Though they rose perfectly, turned a perfect golden color and are nice and soft, they taste nothing at all like the promised "toffee"! (The most distinct flavor I can pick out when eating them is SALT!)

Gramma's Apple Bread Pudding

Wonderful fall recipe! Thank you, Meshel! For a variation, try it with cranberries (dried or fresh) instead of raisins and add a little nutmeg! Try different breads, too - my favorite is sweet italian! Delicious!!

Really Nice Spice Cookies

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2002
The butter to flour ratio listed in this recipe is NOT CORRECT. When made as directed, you get batter only a little thicker than you would for a cake. I went ahead and attempted to bake a sheet of these and ended up with one big sticky mess - no cookies at all! Alternatively, if the flour is doubled to 1 and 1/2 cups and you add 1 tsp baking soda, they turn out wonderful! I spooned this batter into a bowl of sugar to coat them and then put them on an UNGREASED cookie sheet and baked them for 12 minutes at 350. They were great!
