Relocating is one of the most stressful events endured by modern man, inducing insomnia, binge eating, temper tantrums and the nagging feeling that something important is getting lost in the shuffle. Between our desperate attempts to cram a house and workshop's worth of furniture, tools and… MORE

About this Cook
I enjoy making music, writing, yoga, hiking & camping, lifting weights, cooking, traveling, permaculture, growing my own food, reading, fire performing, avoiding employment, beer!, eating good food, mind-blowing sex, roadtrips and rescuing kittens. Mostly I aim to break through boundaries & get off the grid.
My favorite things to cook
I love making stews and soups. . . anything hearty and wintery that should only be stirred with a wooden spoon for that authentic old-timey feel. :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
Chicken soup and knaydelach, Noodles and Pot Cheese, and Shoe Fly Pie (it's just stew, really, but my Dad always thought it was more fun to say Shoe Fly Pie)
My cooking triumphs
Thanksgiving Turkey every year since 2001, with my bitchin' beer based gravy.
My cooking tragedies
Yogurt. I was using the oven, and I was turning it on 250ยบ for a couple minutes, then turning it off and leaving it for an hour, but I was also having a BBQ, and I got distracted and forgot to turn off the oven (and almost at the end of the whole process, too!) and the silicone lid of the metal bowl melted right into the now curdled and cooked milky mess. I'm still pretty disappointed about that lid. :(

Yellow Squash Casserole
Beware. . . this dish is extremely addictive. What makes this so amazing is that it tastes JUST LIKE macaroni and cheese. . . but so much healthier. To turn it from a size dish into the main event, simply add chicken pieces before popping it in the oven. . . so delicious. We also use zucchini instead of, or in addition to, the yellow squash. My boyfriend and I eat the whole 9X11 pan with alarming speed.

Makhani Chicken (Indian Butter Chicken)
This recipe was not only fun to make, it was so good that after we cleared the table, our dinner party guests were crowded around the mostly empty pot in the kitchen, scraping spoonfuls of sauce into their mouths. I used fresh garlic and ginger, and and changed the cooking times a bit to emulate the "next day" effect. I made the red sauce right after putting the chicken in the second marinade, and throughout the day I would heat it up and then let it cool down. When it was time to cook the chicken, I just slapped the whole baking dish with the raw chicken and marinade into the oven for about 20 minutes, and then I scraped it all into the red sauce after that, let that simmer for 20 minutes, added the cream and then let it simmer for another 30 minutes or so, both times without the lid so the sauce thickened up perfectly. Perfect amount of spice as is, even for our group of varying sensitivity - I think the trick is the longer you simmer, the mellower it gets.
