So, I just took a small job being and Examiner for Examiner.com.  I will get paid for writing reviews of north Houston restaurants, cafes, joints.  Now, getting paid is a relative term.  This isn't big bucks.  More like pennies a day, if I'm lucky.  As far as I can… MORE

I was bored yesterday.  I mean, sitting in the floor, trying to put my foot behind my head bored.  I start trying to do strange yoga poses when I'm bored.  So, instead of pulling my hip out of socket or falling over backwards and squishing my chihuahua, I decided to make something. MORE

So, I guess we like role reversal.  My husband is unemployed right now, so he's playing house husband.  I'm off work for the Labor Day holiday.  We have some light austerity measures in place, so rather than go on the usual trip to the beach or someplace, we stayed home. … MORE

So I broke open my 3/4 jar of marmalade today and it was YUMMY.   Even my marmalade hating hub liked it.  I had made my marmalade with a combination of clementines, oranges, California pink grapefruit, and lemons.  I used skin from each as well.  Despite the less that… MORE

So, my hub and I watched What Would Brian Boitano Make on the Food Network.  We just watched it because of the title being like the song from South Park, but a little way into the show, we were thinking "YUM".  The theme of the show was bacon appetizers for a party he was throwing for… MORE

Yep, another spy-like phrase.  And, unfortunately, it describes my marmalade to a tee.  Not sure what happened to it.  It's semi-soft, sort of melty jello consistency.  We're popping a jar into the fridge to see how that works.  The house is a little warm, we keep it no… MORE

Marmalade is in the jars.  Kind of sounds like some secret spy code, doesn't it.  Marmalade is in the jars.  Cigars are smoking.  Canary must fly.  MORE

Well, I finally got over the funk and decided to get back in the kitchen.  I guess I'm going through some transitional issues with a ton of changes happening at work and at home.  Eventually, you gotta shake things off like a bad case of fleas and get on with your life.  Soo, I… MORE

So I have not been in the kitchen in over 2 weeks.  Ok, I've been in the kitchen, but I have not been COOKING.  I've been nuking leftovers, warming up the odd cup of soup.  The hub has been cooking, and cooking and cooking.  It's his method of relaxation.  And, since… MORE

About Me
I'm a working gal from South East Texas who really likes to eat, and cook. I also like to have friends over for fun and food. I enjoy wine and learning about wine. I'm starting to blog about my food adventures and just became a restaurant reviewer for Examiner.com.
My favorite things to cook
I like to cook comfort foods as well as Eastern and Central Asian food. I LOVE to cook gumbo too. I have also found that I like to bake and to decorate cakes. I didn't think that I would like to cook, when I was younger but I do now. I guess I have changed over the years.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Our family gumbo ROCKS. That's really my favorite food to cook. It's fast and easy. Living on the Gulf Coast, you gotta learn how to cook gumbo. I want to learn how to make my grandmother's dressing. That stuff is so good you would lick it off the floor if you dropped it.
My cooking triumphs
I think my best triumph so far has been eclairs as well as my first attempt at a fondant covered cake.
My cooking tragedies
Hmmm, can't really think of one. I guess that one reason I like cooking is that even when something doesn't come out, I don't consider it a tragedy as much as a learning experience.
