DINNER AT 4PM, 5PM,6PM...MIDNIGHT

All you moms out there who have high school/college kids I'm sure know what I mean.  Between school, work, sports, friends etc...we can rarely sit down and eat a meal together!   People are coming and going and eating at all sorts of hours!

I've come up with this method that I only wish I had thought of earlier....I keep different colored lids on containers in the fridge and a white board on the outside of the fridge.  Each week I try to keep the following catagories going:

-a hearty soup like bean
-a pasta dish with veggies
-a meat dish like swedish meatballs
-deli meat
-cooked chicken breast sliced
-strawberries cleaned and sliced
-blueberries, washed
-ready to eat salad
-washed grapes

I keep the fruit and vegs in containers made for salad and the entrees in glass dishes with lids

I list them on the white board showing the date it was made, the name of the dish and the lid color

This way I know what's in there, they know and don't eat expired food!

It's worked pretty well.....everybody can eat when they want to  Usually I try and make things up the day I go grocery shopping.

Give it a try!

I had 5 kids...I feel your pain! That sounds like a great system, I wish I had thought of something like that.

I'm so impressed with anyone who is this organized. I'm not. I'm also so exhausted when I get the groceries in the house (because I usually do all my errands on one day & can make as many as 10 stops), that it's all I can do to get them put away. I usually buy all my meat at Costco, so this entails separating & repackaging everything in smaller meal size portions, besides just putting everything else away. I applaud you. What I do with our schedules is we wait until the last one is home & we eat. On my husband's birthday, we didn't eat until 10:15 PM, but the candle light was better at that time than at 6 PM. I think whatever works for your family is best. I like to have family dinners. My 25 year old son who lives a long way from home now, brags to his friends that his family always sits down to dinner together. It's our only time really together.

Dang, where were you when all of my kids were home? Sometimes, things would get lost in the bowels of the fridge and I would discover them when I would clean it out. I would call this the science experiment. You never knew just what kind or color of mold you would get. Gross I know.

What a great system Jo!!! Wish you had thought of this when all of my gang was still at home. But...I think I may need to use the system for me and my dear old husband anyway. Due to my menopausal brain I forget what is in the ref and a nice sign on front of the ref might help. :-)

About Me
Loving life at 50ish. Kids are gone and I'm focusing on my career! I enjoyed running a chocolate truffle business for 3 years and now teach adults and children about chocolate. I also teach hands on cooking classes at a local cooking school and am writing my first cookbook! Please visit me at my blog www.allrecipes.com/cook/givethemfood
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook almost anything but particularly enjoy Italian. I have been studying Vegetarian and Vegan cooking for the last few years and love to make healthy meals.
My favorite family cooking traditions
from scratch cinnamon buns on Christmas morning...they take forever but Oh! so worth it!
My cooking triumphs
landing my dream job as a teaching chef.
My cooking tragedies
when I was teaching myself to cook way back in college, I made these wonderful oatmeal raisin cookies for my roomies....only problem was I forgot the flour! The cookies became one big mass that overflowed the cookie sheet and made a huge mess in the oven!
