Quick Black Forest Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 30, 2010
I don't know what I did wrong but this was a disaster. FORTUNATELY, the birthday girl loved it but everyone else scrapped theirs into the trash. It was heavy, dense, overly sweet... I'm tempted to try again though as there are just too many positive reviews.

Banana Coconut Loaf

It was nice but I couldn't taste the coconut at all. perhaps add coconut extract instead of almond?

Tres Leches (Milk Cake)

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2010
This is a great recipe but very sweet. 14 oz of sweetened condensed milk can be cut back to a 12 oz can or a bit less. Used only one cup of 2% milk instead of 2 c. I also only put in about 3 Tablespoons of sugar in the whipping cream and nothing near a full cup.

Colleen's Slow Cooker Jambalaya

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2010
This was lovely, I didn't have shrimp so I used scallops which were divine (added them in the end). After 4 hours on high, I ended up having to transfer it to my dutch oven and put it in the oven for under an hour as the chicken didn't appear cooked enough (I was using legs as I was out of boneless breast).

Pear Pie III

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2010
Exquisite. I used 1/2 cup of sugar because the pears I used were very ripe. Mixed a very large teaspoon of cinnamon into the custard. I also used about 4 pears in the pie! Love my fruit.

Slow Cooker Marmalade Curry Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2010
It was my own fault, I should have followed my gut feeling but after reading so many positive reviews I had to try it. This is NOT for people who like a spicy,non-sweet curry. The marmalade overpowers the entire dish. But I'm glad so many others have enjoyed it out there!

Simple Turkey Chili

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2010
This is how I've made chili for years. I always like to try new recipes but keep going back to this one. Over time, I found I liked other beans better than kidney and I've added a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa as well which gives it a lovely flavour and colour. I tend to use hamburger but it's a very versatile recipe. Ancho Chili powder is great in this. So is Chipolte chili powder - but it's much more hot than normal chili powder so you need to be careful. This is also even better the next day.

Peanut Butter Bars I

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2010
These are excellent. Mine were not crumbly at all and adding wax paper is a must before filling the pan. I followed this recipe fully - though I melted the margarine in a pan on the stove and then the graham crumbs, sugar and PB while the heat was still on - I think this may have made a difference helping to melt the mix a little better thus, less crumbling? I also microwaved the chocolate chips and the peanut butter. It was yummy. The only thing I will do different next time is add a bit more chocolate.

Asian Style Country Ribs

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2010
These were top-notch! I baked mine (bone in) uncovered at 325 F and they were perfect! I also didn't have that much soy so I used a good prtion of teriyaki sauce (the watery kind) plus extra sriracha. Definitely a keeper! A nice change from the BBQ'd sort.

Quick Nariyal Burfi (Indian Coconut Fudge)

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2009
Interesting recipe. I used unsweetened coconut and it soaked up all the milk - is that normal? I ended up giving it less time in the microwave due to that. The bars were a little on the dry side but more than sweet enough. Also, I didn't want to waste the remaining half can of milk so I added unsweetened cocoa powder to it (about 1 1/2 T.) then drizzled it on top of the bars which gave it more of an Almond Joy flavour as I didn't use the cardamom. Very chewy, but right tasty!

Megan's Granola

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2009
Very versatile. Not sure if anyone has written this but adding sesame seeds gives it a fantastic flavour! I toasted mine with the other nuts (added pumpkin seeds too). I only make half the recipe and use more pure maple syrup than honey and it fills a cookie sheet.

Chocolate Wafer Roll

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2009
My Mom also made this every Christmas for many years. It has never fallen apart. It could be that some people do not whip their whipping cream enough. we only put in about a tablespoon of regular sugar to the whipping cream near the end. It has to sit for at least 5 hours so the wafers pick up the wetness from the whipped cream and fatten up. Also, we have always used THIN wafers (from Nabisco0 and not Oreos. It's very cakelike. A winner every time.

Baked Spaghetti Squash with Beef and Veggies

Reviewed: Nov. 30, 2009
I have made this a number of times and we think it's wonderful. I'd like to emphasize to those that think this dish is just OK - this is one of the kinds of casseroles that taste even BETTER the next day after the flavours have really melded. I strongly suggest you give it another try. I have added sliced portobella mushrooms and jalapeno to this for some extra kick. This is an absolute keeper!

Cornflake Clusters

Reviewed: Nov. 16, 2009
These are wonderful - unfortunatley, my kids don't like coconut or most nuts (it's sad isn't it?) and I didn't have Corn Flakes but that didn't stop me. I had Vector cereal and toasted some sesame seeds and wheat germ. They tasted just like the sesame snaps in the stores! If I make them for myself I'll do the same again and add chopped peanuts. It was a hit, thanks!

Bagel and Cheese Bake

Reviewed: Oct. 22, 2009
A-one! I followed this the way it was written (well, I did put in extra bacon and eggs) and it was very good! Still good the next day as well! Not bland in the least. I might want to try variations another time but this was very successful! Thank you!

Deluxe Chocolate Marshmallow Bars

Reviewed: Oct. 15, 2009
Very good! My marshmallows were 'peeling' away from the cake part when I melted them and tried to spread it so I just poured the melted chocolate on top and swirled it around. Worked out fine.

Strawberry Cream Parfaits with Coconut Macaroons

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2009
This was a hit but two of my kids didn't like the coconut so next time I'm going to add either ginger snaps, oreo cookie or even chocolate chips. White chocolate and/or chopped nuts would work great, too.

Grilled Bacon Jalapeno Wraps

Reviewed: Sep. 10, 2009
I've been making these for years, very popular. Only I use Westfalian ham (prosicutto works, too) as there is much less fat plus I shorten the baking time or the ham dries out too quickly. I've also had success using turkey bacon. These are a hit every time!

Bacon Turnip Mash

Reviewed: Aug. 23, 2009
You've turned a lifelong turnip hater to one that now loves them! I made this for a group of friends, following the recipe to a T and it was an absolute HIT! Thank you! My friend gave me some massive turnips to take home and I made this again: only because my husband and I are health conscious, I omitted the salt, used turkey bacon (Oscar Mayer) and fried it in some extra virgin Olive oil and to that I added a large pinch of black pepper and garlic. It was equally delicious!

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

I made this for my husband who loves anything and everything chili. While he enjoyed it, he just gave it 3 stars. Won't be making it again but I had fun.
