I need some help and I know y'all are just the ones to do just that!

Tomorrow night, my new boyfriend and his 12 year old son will be joining me for dinner and I haven't a clue what to cook. This will be my first time meeting his son, they are coming to my place and I want to make a great impression!  I am thinking along the lines of a from scratch mac and cheese? Maybe cupcakes for dessert?

ANY suggestions at all would be helpful, I am planning for dinner and dessert. I should also mention that both my boyfriend and I are vegetarian so veggie recipes are preferable but I will cook whatever you think little foot would like....I am not experienced in the cooking for kids arena - I haven't any children of my own.

Help help help! And thank you!!

Charlotte - I suggest asking the son what he likes to eat. No two people have the same preferences.

Just a comment about mac and cheese...my grands hate homemade mac and cheese because they are used to the blue box variety :( I would suggest homemade spaghetti or lasagna or ziti. Most kids like those.

Charlotte - If you ask on THEBUZZ (link top right) you are likely to get a lot more response. Use the REQUEST A RECIPE link. Someone will probably point you to the lentil tacos recipe that is popular around here. I am not sure which one it is.

Twelve year old boys will eat just about anything, and lots of it. You could make something simple like veggie wraps or cheese enchiladas, perhaps lentil soup as a starter. I wouldn't even mention the food is vegetarian. If it tastes good, he will probably not even notice. Plan on having a good amount of fruit and snack type food on hand also. My husband used to say our boys only ate one meal each day, but it started when they woke and lasted til they fell asleep.....I think it is really nice that you are taking pains over this. Have a good time.

My son loves homemade pizza and chocolate chip cookies. His friends all like pizza, too! Although he just turned 28, he still wanted homemade pizza for his birthday. You might also ask your boyfriend what his son likes.

12 is a tricky age. He might eat like a horse, or he might be picky and a bit spoiled. Don't overtax yourself. That way, you won't be so stressed you can't relax and be yourself. And, if he doesn't care for it, you won't be so disappointed. There is plenty of time for you to impress, later on.

my sons are 11 and 13, they especially love Mexican food, I make Tasty Lentil Tacos from Taste of Home or Vegetable Fajitas, Mexican rice and Corn and Black bean salad. Sopapilla Cheesecake Pie from this site is easy to make too.
