Chocolate Crinkles I

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2014
I only gave it 3 stars because I haven't tried this recipe. I do have one very similar that friends & family expect to see every Christmas. Mine uses 1/2 cup butter, 4 eggs & 2 tsp vanilla. The rest is the same. The batter is very stiff so a stand mixer is a huge help. A few tricks to these cookies is to chill the dough for at least 4 hours, use small amounts at a time, keep the rest chilled & to roll the dough into larger balls, roughly ping pong ball size, then dredge them in the confectionery sugar. You will get messy. No matter what size, bake them till they're still soft in the center - like a moist, chewy brownie. They have to sit on the tray for a minute after taking out of the oven so they will continue to cook. By taking them out when they're still soft centered, they'll stay moist after taking them off the baking sheets. A small, metal spatula works best for lifting them off the sheets.

Broccoli Raisin Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2014
I recently had this at a cookout. The combo of raisins & red onion was so good but I was told that her recipe was a secret. I'll be making this for a house warming party soon. So glad I found the recipe.

Very Old Meatloaf Recipe

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2013
This is very similar to my grandma's meatloaf from about the early 1900's. I imagine it was made with kitchen staples at the time, so they had very little seasoning options. The difference in my recipe is that I make it with either bread crumbs or butter crackers, or a combo of them, salt, pepper, garlic & Worcestershire. Everything else is the same. Nothing fancy, basic comfort food from grandma. I've tried other recipes but always come back to this.

Super Duper Chocolate Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2011
I make these every year. One of my husband's sisters got the recipe in her home ec class many years ago. The only difference in the recipe is instead of shortening it uses the same amount of butter. I've substituted shortening but I can taste the difference. I omit the nuts and I roll my cookies into a ball about the size of a golf ball, then take them out while the center is still a little gooey since they still cook a bit while cooling. When it's holiday time, I always have friends call me to see if I've made them yet!

Toad In a Hole

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2011
I suppose my grandmother first made this for me - minus the cheese. My dad called it toad in a hole but I've been corrected by an English friend. I still make this for my grown daughter but I scramble the egg since she doesn't like eggs any other way. Great memories.

Honey-Garlic Glazed Meatballs

Reviewed: Dec. 15, 2010
This is my go-to recipe when I need something quick for a last minute get-together. I use frozen meatballs & sometimes add little smokies. Since I always have the ingredients on hand, it's easy to put together & have ready to serve or take with you. It's good for anything from a potluck dinner to a football party.
