March 24, 1995 is the most special day of my entire life.  My daughter was born that day.  After a miserable (sorry, babygirl!) pregnancy, including morning sickness that continued through the first few months and into the last trimester, and preeclampsia which put me in the… MORE

Tomorrow, February 10, is our 22nd wedding anniversary.  I am making hubby's favorite meal, steak, scalloped potatoes, caeser salad and chocolate cake.  Not a difficult menu, but one that brings back so many memories.  Twenty-two years ago tomorrow we married at the… MORE

I went to my first soup-a-thon yesterday.  It was held at a local Women's Club on a (perfect for soup) rainy January day.  I walked in the door, paid my $5 and was handed a styrofoam bowl,  a napkin, and a spoon.  I looked down the tables and was amazed at the sheer number… MORE

Reading all of the menu plans that other members of AR have blogged about, and seeing how successful they have been has inspired me try it.  Plus the fact that recently I have found myself running to the store often for items I need to make dinner that night.  It's getting… MORE

Less than two weeks until Christmas.  My shopping is done, the house is decorated,  and my pantry is stocked with everything I need to start my baking.  As noted in a previous blog, I'm not much of a baker.  It just doesn't come naturally to me.  I don't feel… MORE

I don't know about the anyone else, but life has a way of putting things into perspective for me.  November has been a challenging month for my family.  We are, like most people these days, dealing with job loss and a  tight budget.  We had a death in the family earlier this… MORE

I am not much of a baker.  I'll be honest about that.  The way I see it cooking is an art, and baking is a science.  I was never very good in science.  I do bake around the holidays, and the few times throughout the year that I get the urge, but usually I don't - not from… MORE

My sister and I learned to cook at my mother's knee, helping (and getting in her way) as best we could.  We graduated into making dinners sometimes, but my mom was the cook in the family as we grew up and even when we all left the nest, she was still cooking for 7!  Her freezer… MORE

Yay!  A cold front is moving through Florida and we won't be sweltering in the heat this weekend.  I can't wait, because I have a whole weekend's menu planned, full of cool weather dinners.  I've been wanting to make soup for weeks, it's just been too hot.  Tonight is… MORE

Today is going to be another salad day at our house.  It is way too hot to have the oven on, and as much as I love my crockpot, everything that I cook in it is cooler weather food.  You know, soup, chili, swiss steak, pot roast etc.  I bought some beautiful tomatoes at the… MORE

About Me
I live on the Nature Coast in Florida. It's kind of rural and very beautiful. Not at all like what most people think when they hear Florida...there's not a theme park for 100 miles.
My favorite things to cook
The simpler the better. My family doesn't like elaborate presentations or food they don't recognize. They like wholesome, well-prepared food.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Teaching my daughter to cook and when she was able to make meals by herself. Seeing the pride and sense of accomplishment she has when it's eaten is joy beyond measure.
My cooking triumphs
The biggest triumph I have had must be when my father (visiting from out of state) told me that I cooked like his mother. She was Danish, and one of the best cooks I've ever known.
My cooking tragedies
Learning to cook on an electric stove! I had never had an electric stove until I moved to Florida and it took me forever to adjust to the fact that there is no such thing as simmer or low with electric. It's either hot or off. There were way too many tragedies to list, thank goodness I'm a quick learner.
