Celebrating AR's 15th Birthday

This past Thursday and Friday, Allrecipes invited their Allstars Across America to Seattle to help them celebrate their 15th anniversary. I was one of those fortunate enough to get to go. It was a trip I will never forget and am very grateful to Allrecipes for providing the opportunity.

When I arrived at the Seattle airport, I immediately went to the Shuttle Express to get a ride to my hotel. It was there in the garage that I noticed a lovely young lady with an Allrecipes lunch tote hanging on her suitcase. I gasped outloud (I think I giggled and jumped up and down too) and introduced myself. And my first, actual face-to-face friendship began with *~Lissa~*. We talked and talked all the way to our hotel.

When we arrived at our hotel as our driver was finding a parking space, we immediately recognized Marianne standing on the sidewalk outside. Again, upon meeting face-to-face, all three of us hugged and laughed and seemed to have known each other forever. As we walked into the lobby, there were mauigirl, Peggy, working azmom of 2, Joey K, and quite a few others who made us feel as though they had been waiting just for us. Again, AR and real name introductions and hugs sealed our friendships and promised a fun time to come over the next couple of days.

Our first large group gathering that night began with a tour of the Allrecipes headquarters. It's a very impressive place with lots of friendly employees.  I heard from several of the employees over the next couple of days, who impressed me with love for their job at Allrecipes, knowledge of pertinent data, and a willingness to listen to our ideas. I feel assured that this coming week they will be discussing all we said and how they might implement those ideas.

I'm sure there are other bloggers who will give you more details about our wonderful time at Allrecipes, so I will just tell you the sessions I attended and key things I learned from them. 1) Gameification - a feedback session of a possible new program AR is considering to make interacting with the site more fun and appealing. Just the idea that they wanted my opinion impressed me. 2) Business Intelligence - I got to hear how AR takes all the data they track and use it to enhance the sight. I learned they can track everything! I realized how my desire may not appeal to the masses, and it really gave me even more tolerance for not getting my way. I think at times in the past, I may have acted like a selfish, foot-stomping toddler, yet the data didn't back up that what I wanted appealed to the majority of needs. This was a very enlightening session. 3) PR - This session was about getting Allrecipes out to my community by TV, radio, and newspaper. I had already learned that Tennessee and Mississippi are among those who use Allrecipes the LEAST. So who knows? Maybe I can be instrumental in letting my area know about this wonderful community of home cooks and their recipes. 4) Social Media - I learned that AR uses facebook, twitter, pinterest, instagram, and many others platforms to reach people. I also learned how I can be involved in that.

We went to the above-mentioned sessions, but we also had time to explore Seattle with our AR friends whose real names we now knew.  Of course, who can go to Seattle without strolling through Pike Place Market? The many vegetable and flower stands, the fish market, the cheese shop, the shop of nothing but oils, and the original Starbuck's were just a few of the places we took in. One of my favorite meals was at Pike Place Chowder where I ordered Seafood Bisque and sourdough bread. And I loved taking the ferry to Bremerton with Occasional Cooker, apple.strudel, and latinacook, where I saw distant Mt. Rainier, the sunset, and then all the lights of Seattle. Beautiful!

Well, I had a wonderful time and am very grateful to Allrecipes for providing this time for all of us. It made me really, really want to go to the Southern Round-Up in Panama City this fall, and I still have another month to convince my husband of it!

TEENA, I try Seafood Bisque any time I see it on a menu. In fact, I have a friend who does the same thing. So I took a pic of it with my iPhone and immediately sent it to her with a little na-na-na-boo-boo look what I've got attitude :) I loved it!

Nice blog Paula. Standing in the lobby of the hotel watching people come through the doors and guessing who they were was magic. The squeals of joy were magic! AR should have had a video team there. :) I wish we could have spent more time together - it all flew by so fast I still can't believe it is over.

LELA, I have no idea where Colorado ranked. I was particularly interested in TN and MS because it's where I live and I've noticed none of my friends are familiar with AR. GDERR, I knew you would come on here :) I promise, I'm trying to talk my husband into being ok with me coming to the Southern Round-Up. We're going to Orange Beach this summer, so I may not be able to go back so soon. Oh well, I WILL keep trying!

Hey, Paula nice to put a face to your name. I was really looking forward to meeting you and enjoy hearing about your weight loss journeys on AR. I went to hug you and Occasional Cooker. I seemed to scare both of you. I didn't know if it was the hug or me. I guess, it was me upon reading this. I just wanted to appologize for that. I feel like I know people from AR and FB, but they might not feel the same instant connection. Great pics., and I am glad to hear you enjoyed your time like. I know I did!

MIS7UP, I had to go back to the FB page and find the list of allstars to remember your real name! Duh, I'm so slow! Remembering 2 names for everybody is hard for this Granna! Now I remember and it was a real pleasure to finally meet you too. I love your blogs and photos and know if you recommend a recipe, I'll love it!

BAKER BEE, you didn't scare me at all! And I loved the hug! I can't believe I didn't figure out who you were faster! That look on my face was simply my DUH look when I'm trying to think and the brain just won't process as quickly as it once did! I feel such a connection to you because you like healthy recipes too and are trying to lose weight. I know I can usually count on you to suggest great recipes for me. Please accept MY apology for what came across as a less than receptive greeting. Can I have a do-over?

About Me
I'm a wife, mother of 2, and grandmother of 6. I love to cook. I especially like to cook new and different recipes. I don't like to have the same meals week after week. My husband has decided it really doesn't matter whether he likes a new recipe or not because he won't see it again for a very long time anyway!
My favorite things to cook
I like to cook entrees and desserts. I like preparing good, down-to-earth cooking. I also decorate cakes, mostly for the grandchildren now.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Holidays bring out the traditions: chocolate chip cheese ball; crockpot chicken and dressing; and broccoli salad, sweet potatoes and butterscotch pie handed down from past generations. Another thing that must be tradition in my family: we all make new recipes when we have company! My mother, sister, daughter, and I all do this. My daddy never understood why we would risk making something we had never made before. Actually, none of us has ever served company a new recipe that didn't taste good.
My cooking triumphs
Cake decorating: wedding cakes, bridal and baby shower cakes, birthday cakes: Little Pirate, Cinderella, Elmo, Strawberry Shortcake. My friends call me Betty Crocker. When my daughter got married, she had a bridal shower where the guests were asked to write something on an apron. My best friend told her if she needed a recipe or help in the kitchen to ask her mother. If she needed a good place to eat out, ask her.
My cooking tragedies
A 4 tier huge wedding cake that fell apart at 2:00am. Thankfully, I still had time to salvage the cake.
