My husband and I recently went on vacation to Oregon and California. We wanted to drive down the coast and see the beauty there is to see in these two states. We flew into Portland and then drove toward Cannon Beach. We stopped for dinner at Camp 18, a huge log-cabin style restaurant, a… MORE

When my son and his family moved back to this area, my daughter said we should resume Family Dinner Night. So we try to get all the family together once a month. That sounds as though it would be easy, right? Well, let me tell you, it's not! Working around school, work, and chemo schedules… MORE

I'm one who once I find a good author, I like to read every one of his/her books. I'm the same way with these Allrecipes collections. I've discovered the MyPlate Collection and can't seem to get away from it. Here are the dishes I've fixed recently:QUICK AND EASY STUFFED PEPPERS - My … MORE

I had several bags of dried fruit in my pantry and wanted to use them. I remember recently when I ate out of my pantry, frig, and freezer for a month without having to do any major grocery shopping. I did not want to let myself have that much again, so I decided to use those fruits… MORE

I hear all the time that people (husbands especially) won't eat left-overs. I can't imagine wasting perfectly good food. I just "repurpose" it. I'm guessing that people get burned out eating the same thing day after day. I definitely would! But if you make something brand new out of it, is it… MORE

I tried several recipes this week that are perfect for anyone looking for lower calorie choices. MOCK OATMEAL isn't a MyPlate recipe, but I thought some of you might like to know about it. I saw a review for it one morning when I was checking the recent reviews and found it… MORE

I'm still making MyPlate recipes, recipes created for a healthy, balanced plate. In fact, I made 21 of them during the month of April. Those of us who are a little older remember the previous plan, the food pyramid. Allrecipes has done a great job placing interesting and flavorful recipes in… MORE

Every year for at least one week, I keep my daughter's four children while she and her husband have a nice get-away. Honestly, I believe every couple should have some alone time, and this is something I can do for them to nurture and renew their marriage. It's easier for me this year. The… MORE

Every year I let my guard down around Thanksgiving and Christmas and sweets, in portion sizes, and in way too many carbs like breads and potatoes. So come January, I have to get back on the healthier eating band wagon. My last blog was about making three different kinds of… MORE

I was married for 24 years and had two almost grown children before I ever cooked a big holiday meal. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, we would alternate from my parents' home to my in-laws'. Until 1998. My daughter was a junior in college and my son was a senior in high school. The day… MORE

About Me
I'm a wife, mother of 2, and grandmother of 6. I love to cook. I especially like to cook new and different recipes. I don't like to have the same meals week after week. My husband has decided it really doesn't matter whether he likes a new recipe or not because he won't see it again for a very long time anyway!
My favorite things to cook
I like to cook entrees and desserts. I like preparing good, down-to-earth cooking. I also decorate cakes, mostly for the grandchildren now.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Holidays bring out the traditions: chocolate chip cheese ball; crockpot chicken and dressing; and broccoli salad, sweet potatoes and butterscotch pie handed down from past generations. Another thing that must be tradition in my family: we all make new recipes when we have company! My mother, sister, daughter, and I all do this. My daddy never understood why we would risk making something we had never made before. Actually, none of us has ever served company a new recipe that didn't taste good.
My cooking triumphs
Cake decorating: wedding cakes, bridal and baby shower cakes, birthday cakes: Little Pirate, Cinderella, Elmo, Strawberry Shortcake. My friends call me Betty Crocker. When my daughter got married, she had a bridal shower where the guests were asked to write something on an apron. My best friend told her if she needed a recipe or help in the kitchen to ask her mother. If she needed a good place to eat out, ask her.
My cooking tragedies
A 4 tier huge wedding cake that fell apart at 2:00am. Thankfully, I still had time to salvage the cake.
