I hate sports (please don't hate me), yet I have a competitive personality. Not necessarily with others. Mainly with myself. I hate to not be able to do something I really want to do. For instance, years ago I could never make fudge. That soft ball/hard ball stage beat me every time! Then I… MORE

Christmas Eve - a whirlwind of a day. I wish I could have fully engaged in it and totally enjoyed it. Perhaps that just comes with the territory of being the one who coordinates and cooks it all. We had fourteen people total, including two 2-year olds, two 4-year olds, a 7 year old, and a 9… MORE

I was married for 24 years and had two almost grown children before I ever cooked a big holiday meal. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, we would alternate from my parents' home to my in-laws'. Until 1998. My daughter was a junior in college and my son was a senior in high school. The day… MORE

My mother-in-law (whom I love dearly) stayed with us for a couple of weeks about a month ago. She had come in from out of town to have cataract surgery. While here, she commented that she would love to have some sourdough bread like we used to make MANY years ago using potato flakes. I told… MORE

Autumn is my favorite time of year! I love the cooler weather and no humidity after 100+ days towards the end of summer. This year, since my son and his family moved back near home, I've decided to host a family dinner harvest-themed party, which will also include my daughter and her family.… MORE

As an Allrecipes Allstar, one of my projects for this month was to make up a recipe using al fresco sausage. Now I consider myself a pretty decent cook. But let it be understood, I follow recipes. I don't create them. In fact, I can even tweak recipes with the best of them. So I just took… MORE

Life has been really busy this week as I've had my mother-in-law staying with us. She came into town for cataract surgery and has enjoyed eating with us and watching me photograph everything I   cook :) Here are this week's healthy recipes and a few that I was able to lighten up. Juice… MORE

A friend and I have been doing a Bible Study together for several weeks. One day last week was our last one, so I suggested she stay for a lunch tea party. I love tea parties! They just seem to be an excuse to use pretty dishes and linens, eat dainty foods, and slow down a bit. I follow no… MORE

I become easily bored with the same foods, so that is why you may have noticed that I am always trying new recipes. Lately, I've been on a quest to find new breakfast recipes - smoothies, oatmeal, grits, french toast. Whatever I can find. One night I was doing a search for cottage cheese,… MORE

I began this week with a new resolve to try and lose more than just a pound. It seems I don't lose much per week now that I'm not walking my 4 miles a day. I look so forward to being able to do that again. I worked at eating no more than my allotted points per day and I did not eat anything… MORE

About Me
I'm a wife, mother of 2, and grandmother of 6. I love to cook. I especially like to cook new and different recipes. I don't like to have the same meals week after week. My husband has decided it really doesn't matter whether he likes a new recipe or not because he won't see it again for a very long time anyway!
My favorite things to cook
I like to cook entrees and desserts. I like preparing good, down-to-earth cooking. I also decorate cakes, mostly for the grandchildren now.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Holidays bring out the traditions: chocolate chip cheese ball; crockpot chicken and dressing; and broccoli salad, sweet potatoes and butterscotch pie handed down from past generations. Another thing that must be tradition in my family: we all make new recipes when we have company! My mother, sister, daughter, and I all do this. My daddy never understood why we would risk making something we had never made before. Actually, none of us has ever served company a new recipe that didn't taste good.
My cooking triumphs
Cake decorating: wedding cakes, bridal and baby shower cakes, birthday cakes: Little Pirate, Cinderella, Elmo, Strawberry Shortcake. My friends call me Betty Crocker. When my daughter got married, she had a bridal shower where the guests were asked to write something on an apron. My best friend told her if she needed a recipe or help in the kitchen to ask her mother. If she needed a good place to eat out, ask her.
My cooking tragedies
A 4 tier huge wedding cake that fell apart at 2:00am. Thankfully, I still had time to salvage the cake.
