Shelby - The Garden Lady
About this Cook
I am 72 years old. I have been cooking since I was 14. I have four children and 5 grandchildren. My first love is gardening, when I am not outside playing in my gardens, I am inside cooking. Forget the house work!
My favorite things to cook
Most anything that is healthy and good for you. I am always looking for new ways to cook salmon, one of my family's favorite.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We have a big Christmas Dinner every year with all of the family home. I also have our family reunion at my house every year. The is the time for good pass along dishes.
My cooking triumphs
I can now cook most of my dishes without a recipe. When I was working we would take turns bringing in a snack the two weeks before Christmas. One day it was my turn and everyone was loving it. One of the girls told the others don't ask her for the recipe, she will tell you a little of this and that. I could tell them what I used but not the exact amount.
My cooking tragedies
A few years ago I was having trouble with everything I put in my oven either burning or not getting done. I had the oven checked and the thermostat was not working correctly. They tried another one but it still would not keep the same tempature. I finally had to buy a new oven. The kids still tease me about burning my food.

Halupki (Stuffed Cabbage)
One of my grandmothers was Hungarian and she taught me how to make these. It is pretty much the same way except I use all lean beef and no pork. I also add canned tomatoes to the meat mixture since I have plenty I can myself. I add the rice raw and it cooks with the rest of it. Also, a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce added to the meat gives it more flavo. I also use brown sugar instead of white in making the sauce. BE SURE YOU ONLY WILT THE LEAVES AND NOT COOK THEM COMPLETELY. Once they begin to look translucent (change color) they are ready to be taken off of the core. This is one of my family's favorite recipes!

Mandarin Chicken Pasta Salad
Since everyone loved this I will give it 5 stars too. I couldn't help but smile as I read the reviews. The onion soup mix is loaded with MSG and the reason it is used is to enhance the flavor of food. It gives a lot of people migraine headaches. I was one until my doctor told me I was allgeric to it. If someone could tell me where to find Onion soup mix WITHOUT MSG or what I could substitute in place of it, I would love to try this salad.

Lettuce with Hot Bacon Dressing
This is a great salad dressing. When my mom used to make it, she did not cook the onion in the dressing. Instead she cut up fresh spring onions with the lettuce or spinach. GREAT!! Thanks for the memories!!
