Stef's Whoopie Pies with Peanut Butter Frosting

Reviewed: Jul. 14, 2010
Because so many other reviewers said that the cookie portion of this recipe was waaaay too dry, I opted to make the cookie from "Whoopie Pies III" from this site. I used those cookies and the filling from this recipe, so this review is only for the filling. The taste and texture were good, but it was entirely too sweet for me. I could hardly eat one it was too much. The recipe is aptly named with "frosting" in the title because that is exactly what it is. If I decide to make whoopie pies again, I'd probably fill them with some sort of whipped cream-based filling. I'd be curious to try a peanut butter flavored whipped cream instead of this frosting.

Whoopie Pies III

Reviewed: Jul. 14, 2010
I only made the cookie portion of this recipe. They were pretty good, although they didn't puff up very much and were a little crumbly (not dry, just fell apart easily). I discovered that they need to be baked on a greased cookie sheet too. All that considered, I thought they were good and would make them again.

Chocolate Syrup

Reviewed: Jul. 13, 2010
A great recipe for homemade chocolate syrup. Like other reviewers, I had trouble getting it to thicken while cooking it on the stove. I found that removing it from heat and sticking it in a jar in the refrigerator helped a lot. Once it cooled it resembled Hershey's syrup both in taste and texture.

Frozen Mocha Torte

Reviewed: Jul. 13, 2010
Really good, but VERY rich. I brought this to a group gathering and most people felt the same. It needs to be thawed just enough to cut. If it sits out too long it will melt and you'll need a spoon to eat it. The filling is very ice-cream like both in taste and texture. The coffee flavoring is just right: strong enough to clearly taste and enjoy, but not overpowering. Great recipe! I'll definitely make this one again!

Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal Muffins

Reviewed: May 24, 2010
All in all a good recipe. I followed it exactly as written, except I baked it as a cake instead of as muffins. The topping is good and necessary. Tastes great when it is hot and fresh from the oven. If I make this again, I will try adding some maple and/or vanilla flavoring as other reviewers suggest.

Peanut Butter Pie X

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2010
Fabulous! VERY VERY rich. I could only eat a small piece of this, though I wanted more! I made this exactly as instructed, but added a whipped cream layer on top of the pie and then sprinkled it with some crushed oreos. Beautiful! I did have a little trouble melting the chocoloate and getting it runny enough to drizzle. I ended up burning the chocolate, which is why I did the whipped cream/cookie topping instead. It worked out well, and I probably will do the same thing again next time. Great recipe! I strongly recommend this recipe!!

Chili Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 22, 2010
I was underwhelmed by this bread. There is some flavor present in it that tastes a little odd. (I think it is the bullion.) If I ever make this again, I will reduce the bullion (or eliminate it) and reduce the onion powder.

Cinnamon Bread II

Reviewed: Apr. 13, 2010
Ehh...I wasn't impressed with this bread at all. It was edible, but not something I'd make again. Like the other reviewers, I thought it needed to be sweeter.

Sweet Honey French Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2010
Ehhh...This recipe gives you a decent loaf of bread, but nothing to rave over. I couldn't really taste the honey at all, and it tasted a little more like a sourdough bread to me than French.

Chewy Granola Bars

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2010
These granola bars are delicious! I followed other reviewers' suggestions and increased the butter and honey to 1 cup each. I also added a few butterscotch chips that I had laying around. It took me about twice as long to bake them than the recipe instructed and one other problem I had was getting them out of the pan when they were done. I waited for them to cool about 10 or 15 minutes as instructed, but they just fell apart. So, I let them cool completely before trying again. Unfortunately, that made it nearly impossible to get them out of the pan since they were essentially baked to it. All that to say: make sure you grease your pan REALLY well beforehand. I will definitely make this recipe again, but will make some adjustments to what I did this time. I suggest: using 3/4 cup each of the butter and honey, greasing the pan REALLY well, and only putting 1 cup of chocolate chips in (since 2 cups yield very sweet, cookie-like bars).

Quick Chili I

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2010
I was not altogether impressed with this recipe. Admittedly, I altered it a bit to fit the ingredients that I had, but the alterations were minimal. I left out the hot pepper sauce, substituted garlic powder for the minced garlic, and used Mexican style stewed tomatoes instead of Italian-style since that was what I had available to me. When I first tasted it, it was a little too sweet, so I added a splash of white vinegar to balance it a bit. That helped, but when all was said and done, there was still some flavor present that made it taste a little odd. Others who ate it said they thought it tasted fine, but I wasn't satisfied with it and ended up getting rid of the leftovers because I knew I wouldn't eat it.

Cinnamon Swirl Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 20, 2010
This recipe is good, but definitely more cake-like than bread-like. It tastes a lot like coffeecake and is decent. A big plus for this recipe is that it's quick and easy and uses ingredients that most people already have on hand.

Gnocchi II

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2009
I really enjoyed this recipe. Gnocci is one of my stand-bys at Italian restaurants and I'm excited to find a recipe to make at home. The texture of the recipe is a little bit different than what you'd get in a restaurant, but the taste is great. They are a little 'fuzzy' around the edges and don't look too appetizing....Cover them with sauce and you are good to go! I would advise other cooks to make sure that the potatoes are mashed until completely smooth (no lumps whatsoever!!)The smoother, the better...I like to make a big batch of this recipe and freeze whatever I don't use immediately. Freezing the uncooked gnocci is super-convenient. If I don't have much time to cook, I can just throw several into a pot of boiling water and heat up some sauce. A very quick and easy meal on the go. Though making the recipe is initially time-consuming, having them on-hand in the freezer is worth the effort!

Rich 'N Thick Hot Chocolate

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2009
Pretty tasty. I actually made this in the microwave, rather than on the stove and thought it was a very easy recipe with great results. Additionally, I made it with a couple squares of a chocolate bar rather than baker's chocolate since I didn't have any baker's chocolate on hand. Delicious! Will make again on another chilly day!

Creamy Garlic Dressing

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2009
I personally did not care for this recipe since all I could taste was the mayonnaise. I tried adding more garlic, following the advice of other reviewers, but was still not satisfied. My friends thought it was ok, but nothing to rave over.

Asparagus with Sliced Almonds and Parmesan Cheese

Reviewed: Apr. 18, 2009
I rate this as 3 1/2 stars. This recipe tasted good, although I did have a little bit of trouble with the cheese. The almonds and the cheese clumped together when the cheese melted, and it didn't stick to the asparagas at all. Like I said, it tasted good, but because of the cheese problem, the presentation was lacking.
