About this Cook
Avid baker and cook. I like to entertain and do so a lot. I also like to experiment with new ingredients and new foods. I am self-employed so I have a fair amount of freedom to do the things I enjoy which is cooking, gardening, exercising, reading, hiking, anything outdoors. I have 2 dogs - 1 pug and a Shitzu/Mini Poodle cross and they keep me active and busy.
My favorite things to cook
Anything and everything. I prefer to make things from scratch for the most part. Most of the time I try to focus on healthy eating and living. The focus is fresh, local, primarily plant based foods, a little fish and poultry and lots of good olive oil. This is exactly how we want to eat.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Family holidays meal are big in our house. Kids have grown up but still expect holidays meals at home. They tend to want the traditional comfort foods associated with each holiday. Another tradition, though not cooking is sharing - we make sure to invite anyone we know who has nowhere to go for dinner. It adds to our enjoyment of the holidays and hopefully spreads a little cheer to the people joining us.
My cooking triumphs
Catering an appetizer party for a friend's parent's anniversary. I actually pulled it off and they loved the food.
My cooking tragedies
There have been many as I love to experiment - too numerous to mention.

Sam's Famous Carrot Cake
This is an excellent carrot cake. I made it exactly according to directions except that I made 1 1/2 times the recipe to make it a 3 layer cake. I also used the cream cheese frosting recipe from this site but modified it slightly. Made this for a family get together - they couldn't stop eating it. I have to say that it is the best carrot cake I have ever made and family members agree as well. This will be my go to carrot cake recipe from now on. Brian, thanks for sharing this fabulous recipe...

Round Steak and Gravy II
I thought this was very good and my husband loved it - thought it was pure comfort food. Made a few changes but stayed true to the basic recipe. Had 3 to 4 lbs. of marinating steak so used 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup, 2 pkg's onion soup mix, 2 cans undiluted beef broth and an extra half can of water, 2 cans sliced mushrooms drained, and 3 bell peppers - red/orange/yellow. When I browned the meat I sprinkled the meat with ground black pepper and garlic poweder - no salt needed because of the onion soup mix. I then removed the meat and added the broth, water and removed the brown bits from the bottom, then added the mushroom soup, onion soup mix, mushrooms, peppers - mixed well and then returned the meat to the pot. Then put it in the oven and cooked it for 1 1/2 hours - it was done by then and very tender. I used a cash iron pot which can go from stove top to oven to freezer and cooks beautifully.
