I currently own and run two companies in the Southern California area. The first company specializes in special event design and coordination. The second company designs and resells specialty designer goods for weddings, homes and babies. I love to spend my life cooking and designing. I believe food is an integral part of our culture. It is a passion I discovered at a very young age.
My favorite things to cook
I am a pastry chef at heart. My favorite things to bake are creme brulee, flan, lemon tort, carrot cake and profiteroles (or as my father calls them, chux). My favorite thing to cook is pasta.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I come from a very interesting culinary background and it has affected my cooking greatly. My mother was a home ec teacher in her hometown of Vietnam and she cooks Southern (Viet) Comfort food. I'm talking about egg rolls, spring rolls and fried chicken (viet style). My father is Chinese, born in Saigon and raised with a 5 star french chef on staff who taught him how to de-bone poultry. My cooking style is part Viet, part Chinese and a whole lot of French.
My cooking triumphs
I would have to say that my greatest cooking triumph has to be when I made a perfect flan at 12. It really instilled a confidence. Since then, I have never been afraid to try something new or challenging in the kitchen.
My cooking tragedies
My greatest cooking tragedy has to have been when I was 14 and discovered the difference between salted butter and sweetened butter. My cookies were positively terrible.
