About this Cook
I want to be a good cook and make nourishing foods for friends, family, and hopefully eventually husband. I like trying new things out and I will generally try a new recipe rather than use one I have tried before, especially when I am trying to use up particular ingredients. I hate for things to go to waste.
My favorite things to cook
I like making sweet breads and soups, because they are pretty easy. However, I am also up for a more challenging recipe sometimes. I like vegetables a lot, especially sauteed with olive oil, garlic and onion. I could just have that on top of some whole wheat pasta and be very happy. Asparagus is lovely. My friend Emma gave me the absolute best piecrust recipe in the world, which I love to make because it doesn't matter how much I mangle the dough, it still tastes great in the end!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Our family always goes all out for holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter especially. My mom gets stressed at having to do so much cooking, but I get excited. For Thanksgiving, since we're vegetarians, we always have lentil nut loaves and mashed potatoes with vegetarian gravy; we also usually have yams or sweet potatoes, corn casserole, creamed peas, and, of course, pie. For Christmas, we make a lot of cookies, but there is no set menu we use every year, although my mom always manages to make a quiche, which is my absolute favorite food. At Eastertime we make sweets and rich, fattening foods that we'd given up for Lent. My family enjoys cooking and eating a lot, all through the year, as well.
My cooking triumphs
Basically, I regard every successful recipe as a triumph, but I particularly like trying new, exotic things that I've never done and having them come out perfectly. I made this really good rice pilaf the other day and shared it with a group that gobbled it up very quickly. I like it when people think my food is tasty.
My cooking tragedies
I do my best to forget my failures in the kitchen, except when they're obvious learning experiences. Usually, anything that turns out badly is due either to carelessness or absentmindedness on my part. But if I really concentrate my energy and do things right, I won't have a flop. I really cannot make a custard to save my life, though, and every time I have tried it has been a tragedy.

Glorious Sponge Cake
It worked!! So boyfriend loved it, and it went great with powdered sugar on top and a bunch of fresh fruit on the side.

Beer Spuds
I think these were pretty good, even if I did make them in the oven. They had a very tangy, distinctive flavor.

Champagne Cake I
A big hit at a birthday party, this cake is for grown-ups! The concept isn't that scary, once you get your stiff peaks of egg whites. Just mix gently (folding doesn't seem so descriptive with the very thick batter you have to work with) and keep your cool. Cooks up very nicely in a bundt pan also.
