AllRecipes helped me find an amazing friend

I discovered AllRecipes many years ago, quite by accident.  I was searching through Google for a recipe I wanted to make and the top result was an AllRecipes page.  I started browsing the site and realized just how much it had to offer, so I found myself returning to the site again and again whenever I needed recipes or ideas.  It took me several years to discover the recipe box feature and on July 8, 2008 I signed up with the site and added my first recipe to my recipe box:  Creamy Rice Pudding.  I can’t remember what prompted me to save that recipe into my box, because I didn’t even LIKE rice pudding!  I think I might have been looking for an easy rice pudding to make for my friend who really likes the stuff.  Shortly after saving the rice pudding recipe to my box, I discovered The Recipe Exchange (now called The Buzz)!!  I lurked for a couple days, then got up the courage to post my own request.  I was welcomed so warmly by several members, including some names you may still recognize:  Celeste, PIXIE2, sueb, and goosegreetings, just to name a few.  I was hooked!

Over the intervening years, I’ve become online friends with several other regulars from The Buzz, but one person has become a very special friend to me.  You all know her as mis7up.  We chatted online for months and then mauigirl incredibly generously offered her home in Las Vegas as a location for a giant AllRecipes get-together in May 2011.  Of course I HAD to be a part off it!  The best part was that mis7up was going to be there, too, and we arranged to be roomies at the hotel in Vegas along with xraybarb and her daughter.

From the moment mis7up and I met, it was like we’d been friends our entire lives!  We laughed our way through an incredible “adults-only” Cirque du Soleil show, hung out together at the Mandalay Bay and visited the Shark Reef the next morning, had a BLAST at mauigirl’s beautiful home with the other A.R. ladies (ARElizabeth even came!), went to see a drag queen show that night, and then enjoyed brunch the next day at the Bellagio.  Oh yeah!  I almost forgot…mis7up and I visited a tattoo parlor, where she got the AllRecipes logo tattooed on her ankle!!

I was so sad to tell her goodbye when it was time to go home!

Not too long after our Vegas bash, mis7up and her family moved from Oklahoma to Oregon and they made sure their trip included a stop-off in a community only about 20 minutes from my house!  We got together at Denny’s for breakfast, but ended staying there for at least two hours just visiting.  Thank goodness the restaurant wasn’t super crowded, so they didn’t kick us out to make room for more customers!  When it was time for mis7up and her family to hit the road on the next leg of their journey, my daughters cooked up a scheme with one of her daughters.  My kids hid her daughter in the trunk of my car and then claimed they couldn’t find her LOL!  They all felt the same way I did.  They didn’t want to say goodbye!  Of course, we extricated mis7up’s daughter from my trunk and said our goodbyes, along with wishes for a safe trip to their new home.  I cried a bit, because I was going to miss my friend.  It’s strange how someone you’ve only seen in person two times can become so important to you.

A few months after mis7up and her family moved to Oregon, my boyfriend proposed to me!  Anyone who pays attention to The Buzz knows that I accepted his proposal.  From the very beginning, there was no doubt in my mind.  I wanted mis7up to be my Matron of Honor!  I asked her, she accepted, and we both started crying :)

We spent the next 14 months talking over the phone, discussing bridesmaid dresses, when she would arrive, where she would stay (my house isn’t big enough for overnight guests), and the best part…how we were going to decorate my cake!  That’s right…mis7up and I made my wedding cake!!  If you heard her talk about it, she’s very modest, insisting that we worked as a team, but there’s something you all should know.  That scrollwork is 99% HERS!  If you look closely, you’ll see little “jelly bean” type shapes lying on their backs all around the middle of each cake, with the rest of the scrollwork branching off of those.  I did those “jelly beans”.  She did the rest!  Isn’t it AMAZING?!

My wedding was absolutely perfect, and a big part of it was because I had the most wonderful bridal party ever:  mis7up as my matron of honor and my two daughters as my bridesmaids.  Just look at how gorgeous they all are!

Of course, there had to be more goodbyes after the wedding.  I had already cried enough happy tears that day, so I didn’t let sad tears show themselves as my new husband and I got in our car and headed off to our honeymoon.  I did cry a little bit later on, because I knew it would be a long time before I would get to see my friend again.  Oregon and California aren’t really that far apart, but they’re just far enough that a quick weekend trip isn’t an easy feat.  I do know, however, that distance isn’t going to keep us from continuing our friendship.  Who knows…maybe one day my family can move to Oregon, too!

I love you, mis7up!  Thank you for being an awesome friend!!

Lovely blog Keri. Mis7Up is a real corker isn't she :) I am sure she is so sad that you can't come to the Vegas bash in a couple of weeks. I know you will make up for it soon though :)

Keri, I love your story! It's the "real" reason this site is the NUMBER food website. People connecting with like-minded people and become friends. Your wedding photos are beautiful and so is the friendship you have with mis7up! Thank you for sharing a beautifully written tribute.
May 6, 2012 10:30 am
Keri-what a beautiful cake. I loved your story.
May 6, 2012 4:03 pm
Well done Keri. Truly a heartfelt story.

> "mis7up and I visited a tattoo parlor, where she got the AllRecipes logo tattooed on her ankle!!" what happens if some day allrecipes change there dot com name? Laser removal?

What a beautiful tribute, to a beautiful person. I almost feel like I was at your wedding too, with all the lovely photos, and the phone calls during!!! Wish I could have been there. Now I am lucky enough to have Melissa in my area, and you can be sure that we make the most of it. If ever you and Dennis can come up,we will all have to get together, and make more memories! As far as the tattoo goes, it is as unique, and quirky as Ms7up is. She wears it proudly, and works hard with and on this site. Actually Melissa is one of the reasons this site works so well. Melissa and other people like her.If All recipes were to change THEIR logo, or dot com name, Missy would still be proud as punch to wear her 'Badge'.

Very special blog Keri! The magic of AR and how it can bring people together, and be the spark of life long friendships is what makes it so special! That is one stunning wedding cake!
May 7, 2012 4:17 am
Very sweet, Keri! SO wonderful you ands Miss7up have forged such a wonderful friendship and bond!
May 7, 2012 6:54 am
Awesome blog Keri. It's been so fun reading about all your get togethers out that way and seeing your friendship grow. Good for you! I've loved seeing the wedding photos and that cake is to die for. Miss7up's tat of the AR logo and name as they stand when all these great memories were being created is just another awesome reminder of a great time in your lives, most people "get" that.
May 7, 2012 8:08 am
Just ignore ol KS up there ^^^ I have seen several times where he/she posts and are contrary and ridiculous. Some people just don't get it, do they? This is a wonderful blog, Keri, and I'll see you in July!
May 7, 2012 8:10 am
And I do believe that tattoo has double meaning, am I right, Mis7up??? Las Vegas and Longview...LOLOLOL! You met up with me that same year and I am grateful to have a wonderful, new friend! Keri, congrats on getting married and a lifetime of happy years to you!
May 7, 2012 8:31 am
Thanks for the great comments everyone (well, most everyone, anyway)!! King Sparta - Like others have said, I'm sure mis7up will continue to proudly wear her tattoo, even if AR does decide to change their name and/or their logo. After all, the tattoo isn't an advertisement for this web site. It's a personal, permanent tribute to the amazing time we all had in Vegas last year. Obviously you're the only one here who doesn't "get" that.

A beautiful blog and great pictures too. A smile and a happy feeling...
May 7, 2012 10:12 am
Very sweet! XOXO to both of you!
May 7, 2012 10:14 am
Beautiful blog Keri! Your cake was gorgeous...I loved seeing all the wedding pictures Melissa posted on Facebook. Congratulations on your nuptials- I wish you much happiness in the years to come! Melissa is such a sweet and dear friend, and anyone who is lucky enough to call her a friend is truly blessed. As for the tattoo- it does not matter if AR changes their logo. That is and will always be the logo that was used at the time of the event at which she got it. It represents THAT trip at THAT time...therefore it will forever be relevant.

I left a comment with a tear in my eye a couple of days ago. Where the heck I left it it beyond me. It's not here. Wahhhh.
May 7, 2012 2:30 pm
What a great story! Very sweet :) Congratulations on your marriage!
May 7, 2012 11:22 pm
Love y'all all. ;-) It doesn't matter about the logo or the dot com with the tattoo and Allrecipes changing it up in the future. What matter to me is the story behind, "WHY" I got it. Just sayin' Kingsparta. Maybe I need to write a refresher blog ;-) ...don't take this wrong sir or feel that you irriated me in the least. I'm not, I simply know, that above the giggles, the shannigans, above the story on how the tat came about. It boils down to a memory shared and the love for one friend to another...and an another and another ;-D. Because the tattoo is a reminder to me not just because of the logo but because it was one of the best memories in my adult life, with not just my dearest Keri (okay she's 1 of the main reasons) but with all the ladies that came together over a love of the website and I truly am blessed in more ways then one, to be honored to where the logo proud. And for what Allrecipes opened me up to and let see, learn and develop myself as a person with friends...dear ones. But I hold the company and all that came with it, in my heart as a Jackpot of gold. And if Allrecipes changes the logo, well then I will have the only permanent reminder, of it. I love my tattoo and show it off proudly. As I proudly wear my heart here on Allrecipes with some of the best group of ladies(and a few gents) this person can have for friends. And to Keri's tribute...I'm am blessed someone cared to share, what I mean to them. SO don't worry about the future changing on my "ridiculous & sick" tattoo that I where proudly. And heck...If AR changes the logo...I just might have to add another for good measure.

Very, very well said! That's our girl!! We love you, and your tat, Melissa!

Keri - I agree with you 100% - mis7up is one in a million!!! And I count her as a true friend also. There are so many levels of loyalty and compassion in her - she is truly amazing. I don't know if I'll ever get the honor of meeting mis7up - but this much I know - I know her by heart and it's a BIG one!!!! And as far as the tatto goes. . . . well I think God says it best "Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart" - and I believe when He looks on mis7up, He smiles!!!
May 11, 2012 1:56 pm have my heart dear ;-) Thank you for your amazing friendship and your prayers. I'm so blessed with your friendship as well.. Love you very much. I have to say, I needed that phone call.

Hey Keri, I posted a comment on the buzz earlier about your lovely blog post - reposting it here because I really salute your friendship and oh congrats and blessings on your wedding! :) ~~~ I haven't been around the buzz for the last couple of months 'coz I enrolled my self for a post graduation in business admin. But today, when I did, I came across Keri's lovely blog post 'All Recipes Helped Me Find A Friend' that talks about her lovely friendship with mis7up. I am so moved by their beautiful friendship, that perhaps even words can't describe what I'm feeling. I've left behind a lot of friends and family and moved to a new land to pursue my masters. And while the thrill of a new land, a new place, and new people is fantastic - I do miss my friends back home and all my friends at AR. But what really comes to my mind (as I meet more and more people) is that true friendship is a really rare gem these days. Somehow in today's fast paced life, people seem to have forgotten the true meaning of friendship - instead all we're left with are shallow friendships that simply cannot stand the tides of time. And so dear Keri, mis7up, mauigirl, gitano (to name a few) and all my dear friends on AR - I salute you for your spirit of friendship and togetherness...may it live on forever! Lots of love!

About Me
I have loved cooking since I was a young girl helping my mother make dinner or bake cookies during school vacations. My favorite class in elementary school was "Nutrition", because we cooked almost every day. I have two daughters who love cooking and baking as much as I do and my husband is even getting interested. He recently started making bread from scratch and he's doing an awesome job of it! We share our home with pets of all different kinds, including birds, cats, dogs, rabbits, a rat, snakes, frogs, a tarantula, and a turtle. We also provide foster care for a local dog rescue, taking in abused, neglected, abandoned dogs and giving them a safe, loving environment to live in until they find their "fur-ever" homes.
My favorite things to cook
Rosemary garlic roasted chicken with roasted garlic gravy; Skillet cabbage; Almost any baked goods; Anything I can make in my slow cooker! Somewhere around September 2008 I decided I was going to start baking all the bread my children and I eat. I'm COMPLETELy loving it and my kids like to brag that "my mommy MADE this bread!" Their favorite is when I make bread items that aren't your traditional loaf of bread, like hamburger buns, bagels, and soft pretzels.
My favorite family cooking traditions
For several generations, my father's family has made a "family tradition" dessert item at each major holiday. At Easter, it's Italian Cheesecake, made with ricotta cheese and anise flavoring (published as "Italian Cheesecake II", if you'd like to check it out). At Thanksgiving, it's "Roly Polies", which were invented by my great grandmother when she had leftover pie crust dough she needed to use up. My absolute favorite, though, is Christmas, when we make Birds Nests. These are made out of walnut-sized balls of a sweet pie crust type dough rolled out very thin. Then we cut slits in the dough without cutting through the edge, gather every other strip, twist them up into a jumble, and then deep fry the pastries. When they are cooled, we sprinkle them with powdered sugar. It doesn't matter how many we make, they all get eaten!
My cooking triumphs
I managed to make decorated sugar cookies for Christmas 2008 that turned out awesome!! I've NEVER gotten sugar cookies to turn out good looking enough to warrant decorating them. They always turn into shapeless blobs. This particular time I reduced the amount of butter in the recipe by 25% and chilled the cut-outs for 15 minutes immediately before baking them. They turned out beautiful!
My cooking tragedies
My first attempt at making Fairy Food candy (also called seafoam candy) was a disaster! I tried cooking it too quickly over too high of heat, so it burned, smelling up the entire house for DAYS. Thank goodness I still had enough ingredients (and courage!) to try again, and everyone at my family's Christmas gathering was impressed with my second attempt. I conveniently "forgot" to tell them about the first batch :-)
