I discovered AllRecipes many years ago, quite by accident. I was searching through Google for a recipe I wanted to make and the top result was an AllRecipes page. I started browsing the site and realized just how much it had to offer,
so I found myself returning to the site again and again whenever I needed recipes or ideas. It took me several years to discover the recipe box feature and on July 8, 2008 I signed up with the site and added my first recipe to my recipe box: Creamy Rice
Pudding. I can’t remember what prompted me to save that recipe into my box, because I didn’t even LIKE rice pudding! I think I might have been looking for an easy rice pudding to make for my friend who really likes the stuff. Shortly after saving the rice
pudding recipe to my box, I discovered The Recipe Exchange (now called The Buzz)!! I lurked for a couple days, then got up the courage to post my own request. I was welcomed so warmly by several members, including some names you may still recognize: Celeste,
PIXIE2, sueb, and goosegreetings, just to name a few. I was hooked!
Over the intervening years, I’ve become online friends with several other regulars from The Buzz, but one person has become a very special friend to me. You all know her as mis7up. We chatted online for months and then mauigirl incredibly
generously offered her home in Las Vegas as a location for a giant AllRecipes get-together in May 2011. Of course I HAD to be a part off it! The best part was that mis7up was going to be there, too, and we arranged to be roomies at the hotel in Vegas along
with xraybarb and her daughter.
From the moment mis7up and I met, it was like we’d been friends our entire lives! We laughed our way through an incredible “adults-only” Cirque du Soleil show, hung out together at the Mandalay Bay and visited the Shark Reef the next
morning, had a BLAST at mauigirl’s beautiful home with the other A.R. ladies (ARElizabeth even came!), went to see a drag queen show that night, and then enjoyed brunch the next day at the Bellagio. Oh yeah! I almost forgot…mis7up and I visited a tattoo
parlor, where she got the AllRecipes logo tattooed on her ankle!!
I was so sad to tell her goodbye when it was time to go home!
Not too long after our Vegas bash, mis7up and her family moved from Oklahoma to Oregon and they made sure their trip included a stop-off in a community only about 20 minutes from my house! We got together at Denny’s for breakfast, but
ended staying there for at least two hours just visiting. Thank goodness the restaurant wasn’t super crowded, so they didn’t kick us out to make room for more customers! When it was time for mis7up and her family to hit the road on the next leg of their
journey, my daughters cooked up a scheme with one of her daughters. My kids hid her daughter in the trunk of my car and then claimed they couldn’t find her LOL! They all felt the same way I did. They didn’t want to say goodbye! Of course, we extricated
mis7up’s daughter from my trunk and said our goodbyes, along with wishes for a safe trip to their new home. I cried a bit, because I was going to miss my friend. It’s strange how someone you’ve only seen in person two times can become so important to you.
A few months after mis7up and her family moved to Oregon, my boyfriend proposed to me! Anyone who pays attention to The Buzz knows that I accepted his proposal. From the very beginning, there was no doubt in my mind. I wanted mis7up
to be my Matron of Honor! I asked her, she accepted, and we both started crying :)
We spent the next 14 months talking over the phone, discussing bridesmaid dresses, when she would arrive, where she would stay (my house isn’t big enough for overnight guests), and the best part…how we were going to decorate my cake!
That’s right…mis7up and I made my wedding cake!! If you heard her talk about it, she’s very modest, insisting that we worked as a team, but there’s something you all should know. That scrollwork is 99% HERS! If you look closely, you’ll see little “jelly
bean” type shapes lying on their backs all around the middle of each cake, with the rest of the scrollwork branching off of those. I did those “jelly beans”. She did the rest! Isn’t it AMAZING?!
My wedding was absolutely perfect, and a big part of it was because I had the most wonderful bridal party ever: mis7up as my matron of honor and my two daughters as my bridesmaids. Just look at how gorgeous they all are!
Of course, there had to be more goodbyes after the wedding. I had already cried enough happy tears that day, so I didn’t let sad tears show themselves as my new husband and I got in our car and headed off to our honeymoon. I did cry
a little bit later on, because I knew it would be a long time before I would get to see my friend again. Oregon and California aren’t really that far apart, but they’re just far enough that a quick weekend trip isn’t an easy feat. I do know, however, that
distance isn’t going to keep us from continuing our friendship. Who knows…maybe one day my family can move to Oregon, too!
I love you, mis7up! Thank you for being an awesome friend!!
