About this Cook
I'm a mom to four fantastic unschooling kids. We enjoy cooking together, going on walks, playing at the park, and all sorts of fun. I'm a big knitter and crafer, though I haven't been doing as much as I used to. I'll admit it, I've gotten kind of lazy with everything in life. Right now we're trying to learn to live below our means, as tough as that is, which means more home cooked meals, less going out, and more time as a family in general. What could be better than that?
My favorite things to cook
Currently my favorite thing to cook is definitely my shepherd's pie and my beef stew, which always turns out slightly different each time. I love colonial and Victorian cooking when I can try my hand at it, but I haven't had much opportunity. Most of all, I prefer to make everything from scratch when possible. Sure, it takes longer, but it's more fun and I get to know everything that goes into the making of it!
My favorite family cooking traditions
It's not a particular day or time, but I love cooking with my kids!
My cooking triumphs
Okay, maybe it's not my triumph, but my daughter is learning how to cook.
My cooking tragedies
There's a story in our old Girl Scout troop about "the killer brownie". While I didn't take part in making it, I share the shame... And then there's all of those "well, that didn't quite work over a fire like I expected it to..." camping moments...

Buttermilk Pancakes I
Fantastic! We had to multiply the recipe. The servings weren't really true to yield for our family. It turned out to be way too much, but still fantastic. I think in the future we'll just use a single batch for the six of us, maybe a double if we have company.

Pumpkin Nog
This recipe was really disappointing, but a couple of small tweaks made this recipe something the who family loved, even me who doesn't like pumpkin! It wasn't near sweet enough so on a whim my partner added about 2-3 Tbsps of cinnamon and sugar mix and about a half cup of sugar, but he likes his pumpkin sweet. It's like drinking pumpkin pie or pumpkin pudding in milkshake form. It is exactly as advertised, the way people think of milkshakes in New England or what you'd think of with the term "nog". It's got about the consistency of eggnog, but pumpkin pie flavored! You could easily make this into a frappe if you simply reduced the milk to...I'd say about a cup? And added three more cups of ice cream. You could probably swap out the pint for a half-gallon, or a gallon if you wanted it really thick and that would do the trick. In short, few little tweaks and this became a fantastic family favorite. I actually liked it well enough without modifications (and I really don't like pumpkin flavored anything!) but the family voted on sweeter.
