Strawberry Cake - Icing Dilemma

I have made this strawberry cake several times. I can't recall the recipe off hand, but it is a white cake mix with a box of Jello added to it. I always frost the cake with chocolate icing. My dilemma is that I am making this cake for my husband to take to work tomorrow and  he would like the icing to be white so he can decorate the top with an Aviation Ornance symbol.  Do you think vanilla icing would create the best combination for this cake?

I want to make this tonight so my husband can take it in the morning. How should it be stored overnight? (Sometimes I find with I put an airtight lid over a cake that is frosted overnight, but frosting looks melted in the morning. Should I just leave it uncovered?

UPDATE: I made this with white vanilla store bought icing (my daughter is teething and not feeling well and I didn't have a lot of time) and it turned out great, in fact, the whole cake was gone. I posted a new picture of it. Thanks for the suggestions.

I usually store frosted cakes in my microwave. This keeps bugaboos out of the frosting while also not presenting the problem of condensation ruining the appearance of the cake. As for the type of frosting, what about a white chocolate frosting? I don't have a specific recipe in mind because I don't personally care for white chocolate, but I bet that would work well.

Maybe a buttercream flavoured with almond extract? Or boiled icing?

I was even thinking about using store bought whipped cream icing or vanilla? My daughter is getting her secind molars and I am stuck on the couch holding her most of the evening.

Buttercream sounds good to. I bake a ton, but I get nervous when I am serving it to other people for events. I worry it won't turn out or it will taste bad.

What if kept it primarily chocolate and just made a white background area on which to place the aviation symbol? Or simply outline the symbol with a line of white icing to make it pop from the dark background.

I ended up making this cake, but with vanilla store bought icing. I may send some dipped strawberries with it, but my husband is decorating the top and I will post a picture soon. :)

instead of vanilla, make a white icing and add a no color favor. The cake looks delicious!

My favorite things to cook
I enjoy making a variety of ice cream, cookies, cakes, and candies. In recent years I have branched out by making new dinner recipes and found that I enjoy the challenge.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I have a daughter that loves to help me bake. We spend Christmas Eve in the kitchen making special cookies for Santa together.
My cooking triumphs
I consider tempering chocolate and making caramels a triumph. You either get it right or your wrong!
My cooking tragedies
I failed several times at trying to make fondant centers for truffles. I decided to put my candymaking book away for a while!
