Golden Pork Chops

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2014
Definitely a keeper! My fiancé is a picky eater, and this recipe was the first time I heard him say "you'll have to make this one again!" Pork chops aren't a huge favorite of mine, but this recipe is juicy and flavorful. It tastes best with fresh mushrooms, but it's still pretty good with canned if that's all you have on hand.

Spiced Pumpkin Seeds

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2014
After carving pumpkins, we had a ton of raw pumpkin seeds, so I decided to give this recipe a try. They're a great, crunchy, tasty little snack! I'm only giving them 4 stars though because I did make some modifications after reading the reviews, and I think they would probably have turned out a bit bland if I'd made the recipe as written. To summarize my modifications: -After reading up on roasting pumpkin seeds, I decided to take the advice to soak the seeds in salt water overnight before roasting. -I used olive oil instead of butter. -I used seasoning salt instead of regular salt. -I quadrupled the spices -I added a little black pepper (personal preference--my boyfriend likes pepper on EVERYTHING) I had to add ten or fifteen extra minutes onto the bake time (maybe because of the soaking?) but after that they turned out great and highly addictive!

Quick and Easy Chicken Noodle Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 9, 2014
As a novice cook, I chose this recipe largely because it didn't involve boiling a chicken carcass to make my own broth, the way my mom always did. While it's not QUITE as good as the true all-from-scratch soups, it's definitely the next best thing, and so much easier! It beats canned soup by a long shot. Bear in mind that this recipe gets much of its flavor from the chicken broth you choose, so make sure to get one you really like. I went with Swanson broth and it came out with a flavor reminiscent of ramen noodles (which I happen to like), but if you're pickier you might want to look for something high-end or make your own.

Buttercream Icing

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2014
Pretty good! My boyfriend loves buttercream frosting, so I was looking for a simple recipe to replace the usual canned frosting on my cupcakes. The texture of this was perfect, not greasy or too hard! I do think next time I'll either add a little salt or use salted butter--I know frosting is supposed to be sweet, but this basically just tasted like solidified powdered sugar. I think a hint of salt would complement it nicely.

Mahi Mahi with Onions and Mushrooms

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2014
This was good! I impulsively bought a bag of mahi mahi fillets without thinking of how I would use them. I wasn't sure what to do when I started looking up recipes and saw that most of them were sweet and fruity (lime, pineapple, etc), which I knew my boyfriend would never eat. Then I found this savory alternative! I might tinker with it a little because we thought it could stand to be a little more flavorful, but I'll definitely be trying it again!

Pork Chops in Mushroom Gravy

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2014
These were nice and juicy, which is good since a lot of pork chop recipes I've tried come out kind of dry and tough. Like others suggested, I used garlic powder instead of garlic salt, but otherwise followed the recipe. The flavor was pretty good, but mostly all you taste is the overpowering mushroom soup--which is good if you like mushroom soup, but it seemed like the fresh mushrooms were mostly there for decoration. This recipe is a good start, but I think I'll be looking for ways to improve on it.

Slow Cooker Spicy Chicken

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2014
My boyfriend said it needed a little more flavor, but I liked it! We served it over rice the first night, with the crock pot juices spooned over the top (which made it more spicy). Tonight I had leftovers in a tortilla with shredded cheese, which I liked even better. I might try it with hotter salsa or add a little hot sauce next time.

Herbed Cheese Omelet

Reviewed: Mar. 29, 2014
Believe it or not, this was my first time making an omelette. I turned out good! I've made it a few times since then and have found that it's very easy to swap out different herbs to use whatever you have on hand. I'm normally not a huge fan of eggs, but wanted to eat them more for the protein, and this recipe makes a tasty breakfast that even I will eat! Cheese makes everything better!

Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Reviewed: Mar. 29, 2014
I was nervous about roasting a turkey for the first time, and chose this recipe because it seemed relatively easy. It turned out great! The meat came out nice and juicy, even the parts that normally get dry. Next time I might look up some ways to add a little more flavor, but I'll definitely use this base recipe again!

Easy Baked Tilapia

Reviewed: Mar. 29, 2014
Tasty! I forgot to get lemons, so I dribbled on a little lemon juice. I also used the Garlic & Herb variety of Old Bay seasoning and left out the garlic salt. It still turned out great! I loved how easy it was. My boyfriend liked it too, and he's kind of picky, so I'll definitely be making this often.

Super Sausage Gravy

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2014
I tried this recipe for my first ever attempt at making biscuits and gravy, and it turned out pretty good! My biggest fear was that it wouldn't thicken, but the texture was perfect! If it had any fault, it was that it was a little bland, but since it's such a simple recipe, I think the sausage you use will make or break it. I can also see how some might want to increase the flour and milk since it ends up with a pretty heavy sausage-to-gravy ratio as written (though I would think it would be more bland that way).

Chicken and Stuffing Casserole

Reviewed: Jan. 28, 2014
The ultimate comfort food! I bet this is even better when you boil your own chicken broth like the recipe calls for, but I cheated and it was still great. I pre-baked some chicken breasts and cut it up for the meat, and I used Swanson chicken broth. I also sprinkled some shredded cheese on top (why not?). It was a hit, and will give the two of us a ton of leftovers!

Slow Cooker Pot Roast

Reviewed: Jan. 28, 2014
We enjoyed it very much. I skipped the flouring step and left out the added salt (since the mixes already have plenty), and it turned out great! What's more, the next day we put the leftovers on toasted ciabatta rolls with mustard and cheddar cheese. If anything, the sandwiches tasted even better!

Gelatin Poke Cake

Reviewed: May 15, 2013
This cake is so easy, it feels like you're cheating, but it tastes great and it's perfect for summer! I made it with raspberry jello. It was a huge hit with my sister's boyfriend, who apparently doesn't usually like desserts! It's easy to customize using your favorite flavor of gelatin. I haven't tried it with fresh berries on top, but I bet it would be good!

Pudding Breeze

Reviewed: Mar. 10, 2013
This seems to be identical to a recipe my mom has labeled as "Pistachio Mousse," and calls for pistachio pudding. This stuff is simple, but tastes great! Like a whipped cheesecake crossed with a cream pie, all on a shortbread cookie crust. I've tried a few different variations, including banana, butterscotch, and chocolate, but pistachio is still my favorite (and I'm not even a big pistachio person). As an added bonus, the spring green color makes it a good pick for St. Patrick's Day or Easter!

Chicken Noodle Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2013
It's not quite as good as a recipe that uses homemade chicken stock, but it's a lot easier and it tastes better than canned soup! I increased the vegetables (particularly the carrots) but otherwise made the recipe as written. I did think it would be nice if the recipe specified what heat setting(s) to use on the stove, for newbies like me who don't automatically know these things.

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies II

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2013
Not the best I've ever had, but the best I've managed to make so far! The texture is nice, chewy without being too dense or too cakey. I would like to try this recipe again mixing in some dark chocolate cocoa and/or chips to see if I can get a richer chocolate flavor. This recipe may be a jumping off point for many future experiments!

Garlic Cheese Biscuits

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2013
I didn't think these were QUITE as light and melt-in-your-mouth as the restaurant ones, but they were still very, very good! And so easy too! As long as I keep a box of Bisquick on hand, I'll always have the ingredients to make these any time. They're a quick, tasty addition to any meal. I'm sure I'll be making them often.

Fluffy Pancakes

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2012
Perfect! I tried this recipe to impress my boyfriend, since pancakes are his favorite. I was a little nervous since the last pancake recipe I attempted came out dense and doughy. But these had just the right texture and flavor! I'm sure it would also serve as a good base for many variations, adding berries and such.

Fluffy French Toast

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2012
I was skeptical about this recipe--it sounded like soaking your bread in thin cookie dough before cooking--but it turned out great! The addition of flour is genius, it really eliminates the sogginess that most French Toast recipes have. In the future, I think I'll increase both the vanilla and cinnamon to bump up the flavor, but otherwise it's a great recipe!
