Chocolate Peppermint Candies

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2008
These are delicious. It is the same as the Peppermint Patties recipe on this site. (That is the one I originally used. They taste just like the real peppermint patties. I used dark chocolate. Yum!

Rainbow Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 21, 2008
These are pretty close to the cookies I used to get in the NY bakeries. I did add 1 tsp almond extract and 1/4 tsp salt. Next time I will add 1 TBS almond extract for extra flavor. It was very hard to spread in the pans. I used 3 disposable cake pans like another reviewer suggested. They were only 8 1/2 by 11 1/2. I don't think 9 by 13 would have fit the batter. It was hard enough to cover the bottom of a smaller pan. I also added 1 tsp corn syrup to the melted chocolate (melted in the microwave). I didn't need to refrigerate it. It harded up very quickly and was easy to cut. I did also use a 7 oz tube of almond paste like other reviewer (it is all I could find). For the filling, I only used raspberry jam, that is what the cookies in the bakery have. Yum! Make a pretty addition to my holiday cookie boxes.

Black and White Cookies I

Reviewed: Dec. 20, 2008
Very close to the black and whites in NY. I used 1 1/2 tsp lemon extract, 1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips. I also used skim milk, b/c it is all I had. I will definately make again. I will try other's suggestion and cut the all purpose flour by 1/4 cup. Update: I should have noted before, use a teaspoon to scoop, a tablespoon is too big and puffy. The rounded teaspoon is perfect. I baked them about 15-18 minutes since they were a little smaller. They were much better with 1/4 cup less all purpose flour. This time they were just like the cookies in NY. YUM!

Chinese Style Sesame Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2008
This recipe is only 2 stars as written. I took others suggestions and cut the sugar to 1/4 cup. I also cut the 1/8 cup corn starch. I didn't have chili paste so I used garlic chili sauce. I used rice vinegar instead of white. Other than that, I followed the recipe exactly. I tasted the sauce before using it. I then added 1 TBS ginger, extra garlic and a 1/2 TBS more chili sauce, plus some red pepper flakes. I tossed it with sauteed chicken and broccoli. I also added some toasted sesame seeds on top at the end. It was good, but next time I will try fresh ginger and even more garlic. It is four stars with the modifications. I don't think it was salty like others rated. I only used reduced sodium chicken broth, maybe that was others problem. I did use full sodium soy sauce, which I usually don't use. Not salty at all. Will definately make this again.

After-Christmas Turkey Potpie

Reviewed: Nov. 30, 2008
This was really good pot pie! I used 3 cups of turkey (we still have leftovers), some leftover green beans and mushrooms, 1 med. potato (diced small, boil for 8-10 minutes and cooked with the veggies), 1/2 cup frozen peas and corn. I sprinkled a little garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper on the veggies. You definately need the golden mushroom soup, don't substitue with anything else. That is what made this dish. For the crust, I used a Pilsbury roll out crust. Brush bottom crust with egg before filling, brush rest on top instead of milk before baking. This was perfect for all the Thanksgiving leftovers. We had stuffing and cranberry sauce as our sides. I will try it with chicken during the year. Definately a keeper! Thanks for a great recipe. :-)

Cocktail Meatballs

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2008
I liked them, but everyone else thought they were too sweet. I don't think I will make them again. I do prefer my grandmother's recipe which calls for tomato soup.

Best Chocolate Chippers

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2008
Nothing special. I didn't find them greesy. I expected flatter cookies. They are crunchy. I wouldn't make them again.

Garlic Shrimp Linguine

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2008
Definately needed to multiply the sauce by 4. I added the cheese in the last few minutes. It was good, but I don't think I would make it again.

David's Secret Ingredient Chocolate Chip Cookies

I didn't like these at all. The rice crispies gave it a funny taste. I will keep looking for a chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Slow Cooker Roast Beef

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2008
I cooked it for 12 hours on low. It fell apart. Didn't need any longer. I bought a pot roast. I used 1/3 cup soy and then filled the 1/3 cup half way with worcheshire sauce. It was very good.

Sweet Restaurant Slaw

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2008
I used someone else's suggestion and used rice vinegar and low fat mayo. I mixed the full about of dressing, but only added about 1/3 of it. We don't like our slaw drenched. It was very good. Needed some salt and pepper, but that was easy enough to add at the end. I let it sit about 2 hours. Maybe it will be even better tomorrow. Update: Only made 1/2 of the dressing this time. More than enough. Everyone raved about this recipe. I did cut the sugar in half and didn't use poppy seeds. I added some pepper.

Apple Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2008
This was really good. I never made apple bread before. I used macantosh apples (4 of them). I did take another reviewer's suggestion and used 1/2 cup apple sauce (which I had just finished making in the crock pot), instead of oil. I made 6 mini loaves and one small loaf. My whole family loved it! I will definately make it again.

Peppermint Patties

Reviewed: Sep. 27, 2008
Wow these are really good! They taste better than the York Peppermint Patties. I did use a whole can of sweetened condensed milk. It was about 1 1/4 cups. I just adjusted the sugar. I didn't measure, just kept adding and mixing until it was not sticky. I added 1 TBS of peppermint extract. Others said it wasn't enough peppermint. Mine are perfect! I formed them into patties, let it sit overnight. Don't make the patties too big. Then I dipped half in chocolate and let it set chocolate side up. To speed up the process, I put the tray in the freezer, then dipped again. I used dark chocolate. MMMMMM....

I really wasn't impressed with this recipe. I used 3 TBS of lime juice. All I could taste was the paparika. I couldn't taste any lime. I would not make it again.

E-Z Marinated Swordfish

My husband really liked this recipe. I marinated his swordfish and shrimp in it. He said the swordfish wasn't spicy. I might marinade longer next time. I only had 15 minutes.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake III

Reviewed: Sep. 12, 2008
This was a good coffee cake. I did use low fat sour cream. Everyone at work raved about it. They didn't believe that I made it from scratch. They were trying to figure out my "secret". I thought it was good, but not the best I ever had. I might make it again. I did make one as a bunt cake and one in a 9x13 pan. The bunt took about 20 min longer to cook.

Crisp Lemon Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Sep. 2, 2008
Everybody loved these. I did add some extra lemon extract. I also cut the recipe in half b/c I was making many different kinds of cookies for a cookout. I used the whole egg (I couldn't figure out how to use half). They were great. Would definately make again. Thanks for a great cookie recipe.

Italian Spaghetti Sauce with Meatballs

Reviewed: Sep. 2, 2008
I only made the meatballs, so this is not for the sauce. They were very good. I did use packaged bread crumbs. I only used about 1/2 cup. They were seasoned. I also omitted the cheese and used fresh parsley since I had it. They were very good. My 4 year old loved them and so did my picky husband. Update: The sauce is ok. I have made better. This is the recipe I still use for my meatballs though.

Baba Ghanoush

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2008
This was good. Very watery. It was a lot of time and ingredients were expensive. I will buy my baba ghanoush next time. The one in the container is much better. Maybe with garlic or roasted red peppers added it would be better. Needed something...
