Spiced Yogurt Pound Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2012
My 9-year old daughter made this as surprise (I handled the oven). It's her first cake and it is FABULOUS. We had to make several changes, we used 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup applesauce (we were out of butter) and we used a cake pan (no bundt - still baked for 30 minutes). The math and chemistry of baking are so educational and then to have such a fabulous, moist result. My daughter used the drizzle described in the most useful review BUT other than these adjustments noted, followed the recipe exactly. New family staple.

Fluffy Pancakes

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2011
My children and I are learning to cook together. It's a a wonderful way to teach science and math. This recipe is great just on that level. We all thought making buttermilk using vinegar and milk was cool - and the gas bubbles released as the mixture comes together is another lesson. The first time, I followed Adrienne's suggestion (sort suggestions by most helpful) and did not add the butter (I added vanilla too) - the pancakes were super fluffy and tender. Today, I was in a hurry and followed the recipe as is - the pancakes are still fabulous, but they are not as fluffy and I didn't want anyone to use butter. I would highly recommend skipping the butter. It's much healthier, the pancakes are fluffier, and one can add a dab of butter on the plate. AWESOME and EASY recipe.

Slow Cooker Split Pea Sausage Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 2, 2011
This was fabulous! I used the advice given by others (sort by "most helpful" under reviews). 8 cups of chicken boullion - I am a very new cook, so the canned kind. I used real garlic cloves (3) instead of powder. I diced everything very fine and put it in. Instead of sausage, I used a leftover ham bone I had stored in the freezer. After 5 hours, I took out the ham bone and put everything through the blender (my kids won't eat anything that has different textures or competing colors). I did not have potatoes so after an extensive internet search, I added instant flakes - Betty Crocker - about 1/3 cup. It thickened the soup perfectly (I whisked the soup to get out all lumps). Then I cut up the ham and put it in (I pick it out when I prepare a bowl for my children). I did add salt - note for those cooking impaired - if you add salt that's not granulated, wait a few minutes for it to dissolve before adding more. This recipe was so easy and so fabulous. My husband LOVED it, my kids liked it (this is huge), and I felt like an expert cook. If you are new to cooking, start here. You will be excited to try more recipes.
