Fluffy French Toast

Reviewed: Feb. 22, 2011
The flour definitely makes this recipe!!! It adds a texture to the french toast that gives it that crunch without it being soggy like regular french toast. I also made this with a homemade bread recipe from this site (Challah I) and let me just say I will NEVER eat regular french toast again!!

Chewy Caramel

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2011
Awesome recipe! I halved it and used 1/2 cup each of butter and corn syrup, 1 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 can sweetened condensed milk. I also squeezed in a bit of honey just because. It took a while for it to get to the "soft ball" stage (probably 30ish minutes but I was patient and stirred it constantly). I then removed it from the heat and swirled granny smith apples on skewers around in it. After rolling the coated apples in chopped peanuts and then placing them in the freezer for about 10 minutes to set we had PERFECT caramel apples. Sliced two to eat and tightly wrapped the others in plastic wrap and placed in fridge. They kept well and were just as delicious the next few days! Just like the ones from the state fair!

Funnel Cakes IV

Reviewed: Jan. 19, 2011
Tastes JUST like the funnel cake at the state fair. Except now I can have it all year long and for a fraction of the price! I also used this same recipe to do Fried Snickers (sounds crazy but I was turned on to these at the South Carolina State Fair a couple years ago- DELICIOUS) I coated the snickers (or whatever candy bar you like) in the batter and then rolled it in flour and then coated in batter again. Fried it in oil for about a minute per side. Topped with powdered sugar. SOOOOOOO GOOD! Definitely not healthy but well worth the calories.

Authentic Louisiana Red Beans and Rice

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2010
This was DELICIOUS!!!!!! My first time cooking dry beans and I thought I would try this... Oh my gosh!!! It could not have tasted any better!!! I took the advice of another reviewer and sauteed my sliced andouille first to get a good sear on the outside. I then sauteed the vegetables in the remaining fat from the sausage (not the healthiest option but well worth it in taste) I also used half chicken broth and half water (6 cups of plain water sounded to bland) After 2.5 very miserable hours of smelling this delicious aroma throughout the house, I added all the vegetables in with the sausage and seasoned it a bit more (with various spices). All I can say is WOW!! I served half that night for dinner (over white jasmine rice- the sticky kind used in asian cooking for sushi). The sticky rice really helped hold it all together and prevented everything from becoming a broth-like soup. The rest I froze in individual servings for a later date. 5 Star recipe for sure!

Fluffy Pancakes

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2010
These pancakes were by far the lightest, fluffiest pancakes I have ever eaten! Tasted like they came from a vintage diner. And the recipe is ridiculously easy to follow. I was a bit leary about the vinegar but I understood the concept of making buttermilk from regular milk so I went with it. I will never use boxed mix again!!

Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2010
I had never cooked a whole turkey before and decided to use this recipe for my first Thanksgiving... and I will never use anything else! This bird was soooooooo amazingly tender and juicy and had more flavor than any other turkey I have ever tasted!! The breast meat was literally soft enough to cut with a fork and bursting with juices and flavor!! I took other reviewers' advice and doubled (probably tripled) the butter. I used the tub margarine and mixed the seasonings in with the butter before placing it under the skin and in all the nooks and crannies. I cooked mine breast side down and then flipped it the last 45 min to get the golden brown skin. I also stuffed the cavity and surrounded the bird by whole garlic cloves, quartered onions, sliced carrots, and sliced celery. This bird was delicious even the next day cold from the fridge and was used in both sandwiches and soups the next week. Simply taking the meat, veggies and broth from the pan + some cooked egg noodles made the best turkey noodle soup eeever! THANK YOU ROBIN!

Donut Muffins

Reviewed: May 28, 2010
OMG!!!! Delicious beyond belief!! I absolutely tried this recipe on a fluke solely becuase I ran across it on the site and happen to have all the ingredients needed... well definitely a great surprise!!!!! I ate 2 of these little things before I could even get the cinnamon-sugar on it! I will say for next time that I will decrease the nutmeg down to 1/4 tsp. but thats just a personal preferance. And I didnt have a 'mini' muffin pan I only have the 12-cup regular one and I filled each cup half full and still baked for 15 min and they came out PERFECT! SOO EASY and SOOO GOOD!

Bread Pudding II

DELICIOUS!!!! This was very very easy to make and came out perfect! I left out the raisins simply because I didnt have any on hand but definitely didnt miss them in the finished product. I also used heavy whipping cream instead of milk and added a bit of brown sugar in to the egg mixture! YUMMY! Will definitely make again and again!

Szechwan Shrimp

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2008
WOW!! This was sooooo DELICIOUS!! I would not have thought to mix these ingredients together to make a sauce but it really was good! I did double the ginger to give it a more authentic chinese restaurant taste! I sauteed white onions, bell pepper, and minced garlic first. Then added some frozen stir-fry vegetables that I steamed in the microwave. I also used RAW shrimp (as suggested by another reviewer because i feared if they were pre-cooked they would turn out tough) SO GLAD I DID!! Anyway I then followed the recipe as written, cooking until the shrimp were pink and tender (about 5 minutes) It was great! Even my VERY picky boyfriend asked for seconds!!! I will defintely be keeping this recipe on hand!

Spanish Rice II

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2008
Very good!!! VERY Authentic!!! Keep a close watch on the rice while it is browning- it can and will burn very quickly if you dont!!! I also used chicken broth instead of water and salsa instead of canned tomatoes for some added flavor!!! Highly recommended! I left mine on medium heat, covered, and simmered for exactly 30 min. PERFECT!!

Taco Lasagna

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2008
YUMMY!!!! This was a nice twist to traditional italian lasagna. I took the suggestion of another reviewer and did mine in a round pan so that I only needed 1 tortilla per layer. But make sure your pan is deep enough or otherwise use two pans. I used flour tortillas instead of corn simply because my family isnt a fan of the corn ones. I also blended two heaping tablespoons of cream cheese into the sour cream to add a bit of sweetness to the dish!! And of course top it with tons of cheese!! DELICIOUS!!! Also a good dish to assemble ahead and freeze for a super quick dinner on another night!

Annie's Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips

Reviewed: Sep. 23, 2008
Delicious! I used strawberries, granny smith appels, peaches, kiwi, and green seedless grapes- all fresh. Chopping all the fruit of course was a bit tedious but dont be discouraged- it was well worth the effort. I didnt any any perserves- it was fine without it. I ended up not putting any sugar on the tortillas before baking them because I realized after the first batch that the combination of sweet fruit and sweet chips was just a bit too much. Just a personal preference I think. But overall very good.

Apple Crisp IV

Reviewed: Sep. 23, 2008
YUMMY!! This was delicious! I ended up using 4 granny smith apples and making a bit more of the crumb mixture (as I didnt feel as if I had enough) I also used half white sugar and half brown sugar just to vary the sweetness and I took the advice of another reviewer and tossed the apples in some additional cinnamon-sugar before placing them in the dish. I also added a bit of milk to the bottom layer of the crumb mixture because I feared the crisp would be too dry without it. Turned out GREAT! The bottom was nice and chewy, the apples were sweet but still tart, and the top was crispy and golden brown. Will definitely make again.

Marie's Easy Slow Cooker Pot Roast

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2008
THE BEST EVER!!!!!! The meat was so ridiculously tender!!! It literally melted in your mouth! I did marinate my meat overnight(in italian dressing) and I also took the advice of previous reviewers with a few other changes: dissolve 2 beef boullion cubes in the water before adding it in (you could use 1 can of beef broth for the same result), and add 3 cloves of garlic, chopped as well. I also added 1 tsp cayenne pepper to give it some kick. When it was done, I could barely keep my boyfriend out of the pot long enough to actually serve it up! Oh I can't say enough about this roast- it was THAT good! I will be reusing this recipe many many more times. Thanks sooo much Marie!

It's Chili by George!!

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2008
DELICIOUS!!!! Such an amazing flavor combination. I did make a few changes to mine though 1)add 2 fresh diced tomatoes 2)used 3 beef boullions dissolved in 2 cups water instead of tomato juice 3)add 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce, 4 tablespoons ketchup, and 1 tablespoon worschestire sauce 4)add 3 cloves garlic, chopped 5)used 1 can chili beans in spicy sauce instead of pintos 6)use 1 tsp brown sugar instead of white sugar 7)add 1/4 cup real bacon bits..... I ended up using 1 pound fresh ground beef with 3 large leftover hamburger patties (from dinner I cooked the night before) that I crumbled up. I combined everything (except the fresh meat) in the crock pot the night before and let it sit in the fridge til morning. Woke up and browned the fresh meat and then added it to the pot and let it cook on low for about 10 hours. Came home and was BLOWN AWAY by the aroma alone. Smelled soooo good! This was my first time making home made chili and I got so many compliments from my guests. Served with shredded cheddar, sour cream, and cornbread as a side! YUM! You can really alter it to your own personal taste but this was a good base. Will definitely be making again!
