About this Cook
I am trying to figure out how a Jersey girl like me wound up in Bangor. I struggle to control the amount of carbohydrates in my diet (and my family's)
My favorite things to cook
I like to make a big pot of spaghetti sauce (gravy?), but I struggle to get the ingredients I need up here. I like to make wings in the winter during football season. I have also become quite impressed by my grilling skills lately.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I come from a third generation Italian-American mother and a first generation Polish-American father, so there's lots of food traditions. As a child, my favorite food memory is sneaking into my Babci's kitchen on Easter Sunday to snatch a taste of meat pie. Another was helping my grandmother make pasta fazool on Sunday afternoons.
My cooking triumphs
Successfully making baby food for both my girls was an important achievement for me. I believe that is why they are such good eaters and hope they will continue to make good choices. I was very proud to make my first batch of babka, just like Babci's. And finally, when I mastered my mother's (and grandmother's) meatballs.
My cooking tragedies
When I was 8+ months pregnant with my second daughter, I ruined frozen chicken nuggets and french fries. . . .a tragedy on many levels, yeah? Another recent tragedy was when I used some cheap-o brand romano shake cheese in my meatballs. This ruined the ENTIRE pot of sauce. I will pay for Locatelli. I will pay for Locatelli. . . .

Sicilian Brasciole a la Lena
I really should taste it first. It is cooking right now. This rating is based on the clarity of the directions and the recipe itself, which I thought was very clear and well written. If I remember to, I will add to the review after my carb-induced coma (pasta AND garlic bread? really?) I also learned something - that 'grandma's house' smell? It's parsley and olive oil.

Real N'awlins Muffuletta
hoooo, yeah. I make the olive salad in the food processor - rough chop the stuff, then just three or four pulses to keep it coarse. then add the liquids and seasonings in the jar it's going to be stored in. So hard to get good bread up here in Maine, but a crusty italian loaf is a must. In season, I spread a few fresh basil leaves on top of the olive salad when building the sandwich. I use cappicola; mild or hot. I usually make at least two of these, so I do one spicy and one mild. This is the best summer picnic meal EVER. Thank you for sharing an outstanding recipe. Vegetarians like this with roasted red peppers and/or grilled eggplant to replace the meats.

Original Homemade Italian Beef
this is always a crowd pleaser. I can't wait to put a hunk of sharp provolone on my sandwich later at pot luck. I am thinking it will be great on my super spicy italian beef sammie.
