Even tho I started out cooking young (as a teenager) and really liked to do it, especially baking. Over the years, particularly since living alone, I haven't done much cooking. I am going to try to do more healthy cooking for myself and maybe even friends and family now and then...;0)
My favorite things to cook
I haven't done much in years, but love doing different kinds of desserts and am always looking for great veggie recipes as well.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Baking! My mother was a great baker and loved to experiment with trying new and different recipes especially around holiday time. She created a lot of her own recipes, but it was hard to learn from her because she NEVER measured anything. When asking for her recipes she would always say, " oh, a pinch of this or a handful of that, or just keeping adding and tasting until you get the right taste." She was well known for her great fruitcakes, (even by those that did not like fruitcakes) and rum balls and candy recipes as well.
My cooking triumphs
I saw an idea once in a magazine to cook teriyaki salmon and was very successful with my first attempt. My kids' friends always liked to stay for dinner when I was making Chili-mac for dinner. During Christmas season last year, I also found a great recipe on this website for Watergate salad that I took to work for a pot-luck lunch we had and everyone raved about it and asked for the recipe. Oh yeah, I make a mean iron skillet of home made cornbread, too....
My cooking tragedies
For some reason, in my earlier years of cooking I went thru a spell where everytime I tried to cook a big pot of dried, white lima beans with rice like my mother had taught me, I burned the beans every time. So, for a while I gave up on cooking them. But later was able to cook them without burning the beans and/or the pot!
