About this Cook
Not yet 30, I live right outside of Austin, TX with my long-time boyfriend and our 3 dogs (Cujo is the yorkie/Chihuahua mix on my profile). We love to do things like mountain biking, kayaking, jet skiing and sailing together. I also enjoy crocheting, cooking, gardening, and am interested in learning about wine. My dream is to someday have a garden big enough to be able to go outside, pick a few things, and make a meal out of it! I love my job, and love my family even more. "The Mr." has 2 neices (I also call mine) and have started the 5-year old making cookies and decorating cupcakes. Some day, with my training, she will be a master chef!! Anyone who wants to contact me with questions, comments, tips, whatever, I can be reached at janjanrice@hotmail.com
My favorite things to cook
The only thing I love more than a big plate of spaghetti and my home-made rolls, is the mr! Ahhhh, nothing beats that! It's my ultimate comfort food! Next favorite is meatloaf, but many recipes I've found on this site are closing in on the favs. I'll bake anything I can get the recipe for, and test it on anyone who'll eat it. Luckily I work with a bunch of hungry scavengers! If I ever have leftover anything, I can count on them!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I LOVE LOVE LOVE baking for the holidays! I make lots of different cookies and give them as gifts at work (yes, they like it). My favorite holiday is Christmas followed closely by Thanksgiving. I just LOVE holidays with a big family dinner! Every time my sister-in-law visits, I make rolls for her to snack on, and always give her a batch "to go". Only 3 holidays into my family, I'm hoping to start many holiday traditions which include me baking and cooking up a storm!
My cooking triumphs
I consider a meal a success any time it fills a belly and puts a smile on someone's face. Last year for Thanksgiving, I met some of my extended family for the first time. I made most of the dinner, and it went off without a hitch! Everyone loved the food (even though it was the first time ever I made several of the recipes!) and the only left-overs was the turkey. I also remember the time I was told that MY spaghetti is better than anyones, including the one that taught me to make it!!
My cooking tragedies
I cannot, for the life of me, cook pork. I dont know what it is, but I just cant swing it. I burn bacon, pork chops are chewier than gum (but not as pleasant), and it just doesnt taste good. It's my single weakness, the only thing I cant do. HELP!

Schlotsky's Bread
Really great recipe! I love that it's easy to make because all the ingredients are kitchen basics. The bread was a holy terror to get out of the pan, so next time I'll probably just line it with aluminum foil, spray it and sprinkle the corn meal. I prepared it exactly as stated and baked the dough in 2 loaf pans, then cut each loaf in half making 4 sandwich buns. I spread a chipotle mayo on, added cheese and meat and broiled the sandwich. The texture of the bread is very much like Schlotzsky's, which is what I was going for. BTW, the title name is spelled wrong, which made the recipe difficult to find. But it's a keeper!!

Hearty Oatmeal Pancakes
This is a really great recipe and stands up to its name! Now I had a hard time deciding between 4 and 5 stars, but picked 4 for these reasons: I made it as written and it was good. But I liked it better after I added some applesauce, more milk, apple pie spice, and even mini chocolate chips to some and raisins to some. I think I might like the texture (more like traditional buttermilk) if grinding the oats first. But I encourage you to try it and make it your own. Top it with syrup, nutella, etc. You wont be sorry!

Best Burger Sauce
Really good sauce! I suppose I'd give it a 4.5 if I could, but chose the 4 star because it was really good, but didn't knock my socks off. The flavors went well together and it was good on the burger.
