About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
I'm happiest when I'm elbow deep in all-purpose flour with the oven pre-heated to 375... anything that falls into the realm of 'baking' is on my favorites list. Specifically? Tasty breads, cakes, and pies. Choux pastry happens to be my specialty.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Doukhobor food: that rare blend of Russian heritage and vegetarian fare. Vareniki, borscht, piroshki are all perennial favorites.
My cooking triumphs
I made my first loaf of French bread when I was 10, without letting my mother in on the plan... she thought I was just mucking about in the kitchen until she started to smell baking bread. I think I would have been in a lot more trouble if it hadn't been so tasty!
My cooking tragedies
A traditional Doukhobor feast in France went horribly wrong when twice the number of people showed up. I had planned to make labor-intensive vareniki, but came up way short on the quantities... everyone had _just_ enough to eat. For any self respecting Doukhobor, this is a tragedy! Guests must eat their fill and then some! Since then, I always make too much at dinner parties...

Dark Chocolate Cake I
I cut this recipe in half and it worked beautifully. Very moist. Paired with pie cherry filling and mounds of almond whipped cream, the cake was a hit. Thanks :)

Fresh Lime Curd
This is a great lime curd recipe (and I've tried a few). Many recipes call for egg yolks only, but this was smooth and just creamy enough. A little grated ginger adds a nice twist.

Banana Banana Bread
This is the gold standard in banana bread. Nothing fancy going here, just a classic, pure and simple. My tip: for those of you having trouble finding enough "over ripe" bananas, start a "banana bin" in the freezer, and any time you have a few old bananas laying around, toss them in. The skins will go all black, but that's okay. When you have a bunch, just defrost and you're good to go! They may weep a little liquid but I just mash it all up and it seems to turn out the same.
