I was raised on Jello salads and boxed cake mixes, Chef Boyardee boxed pizza mix, and later on Hamburger Helper. My mom meant well, she just didn't know any better. I rebelled in college and discovered the joy of cooking from scratch and have NEVER looked back!
My favorite things to cook
Baked goods, traditional Amish/Mennonite recipes, Indian food, anything with chicken, healthy soups in winter, and anything from Provence.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Mom wasn't a very innovative cook, but her Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings was always a favorite. Her spaghetti sauce, though made with ground beef, was incomparable - the recipe has sadly been lost.
My cooking triumphs
My homemade breads. Coq au vin. My pie crusts (made only with butter and lard, no nasty trans fats). Corned venison. Butternut squash soup (who knew?).
My cooking tragedies
Um, that last batch of gingerbread I tried to bake in a cast iron skillet. I don't know WHAT I was thinking.
