Spicy Zucchini Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2011
Bravo on this cookie recipe, Deb C! I would not have thought of adding cloves to an oatmeal cookie, but it turned out to be absolutely delicious! I love the fact that I can hide a vege in my husband's cookies (yes, kids come in all ages). The only thing that was a little odd is that my cookies did not spread out - they stayed mounded, but that could be because I used gluten-free flour. Other than the GF flour substitution, I made these exactly to instructions, and will definitely make them again. A not-too-sweet, very tasty, all around great cookie!

Quinoa Chocolate Treats

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2011
This is some seriously crazy stuff. The flavor is fantastic (depending on the qualify of ingredients you use, of course), but when you bite into a piece your head kind of rattles a little because of all of the quinoa popping against your teeth, and just when you think you're done with a bite . . . you're not - really. That quinoa just hangs around and hangs around in your mouth defying all sorts of statistical odds. Since quinoa is on the pricey side, I definitely wouldn't consider doing this again, but I give serious kudos to Anthony for the sheer unlikeliness of the ingredients in this recipe.

Sausage Casserole

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2011
I seldom make any recipe more than once (there are just so many recipes out there to try, right?), but this one I've made three times in the past two months. Why? Not because it's fancy or has complex flavors -- I've made it that many times because it's GOOD - just plain comfort food at its best good. (P.S. Made exactly as instructions state)

Irish Whiskey Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2011
I LOVE this cake. Every St. Patrick's day my husband anticipates the corned beef, etc.; this cake is my reward for making that vile stuff for him. As to the cake, I make it exactly as written. Having made this several years, I have noticed that there is a significant taste difference depending on the quality of whiskey used. This year I used Redbreast pot distilled whiskey (aged 12 years), and it was out of this world (albeit a bit pricey - if you like whiskey, though, it's absolutely worth it).

Autumn Apple Salad II

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2011
Lovely recipe - the taste is not quite as lovely as the fruit salad dressing I make with heavy whipping cream, lime juice and powdered sugar, but the fact that it is both tasty AND virtuous means it's a keeper. It was quick to assemble (huge bonus), and it lasted in the refrigerator for several days (days, not weeks). This an excellent example where fast food really can be good tasting and healthy food.

Easter Story Cookies

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2011
I originally received this recipe from a very dear friend of my mother's, but her version was called Overnight Oven Cookies I believe. As I lost that recipe, I ended up here. Can't speak to the religious nature of the cookies, but I can say that for someone forced into a gluten free diet these cookies are fab. It takes time (and many failures) to get the alternative flour thing down, so this recipe offers a particularly good alternative to horrifically expensive GF store-bought cookies (providing patience (or a bad memory) is a virtue you possess).

Nutmeg Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2011
This cake is really, really wonderful! I ground my own nutmeg (There is SO much more complexity to the flavor than what you get in the pre-ground bottled variety. I purchased whole nutmeg seeds at Penzeys.), and this cake showcased the flavors exquisitely. The cake was very tender and moist. As far as the frosting, I can't say I'm a fan, though. Made per instructions, I did not have enough frosting for the sides of the cake, and the flavor didn't really compliment the cake. Next time (and I WILL make the cake again), I will take the other reviewers' advice and choose perhaps a butter cream.

Pure decadence. Great weekend breakfast as tasks can be easily split between helpers.

This recipe is so good my husband ate every last spec of potato off the pan while "cleaning up."

Zesty Slow Cooker Chicken Barbecue

Super recipe! It's completely (cooking) cheating at its best. The prep time, the flavors, energy savings (with a slow cooker) and the convenience make me absolutely love this recipe.

Fried Sausage Grits

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2011
Despite the fact that you have to "plan ahead," I like this recipe quite a bit. Remembering to make this the night before is always my downfall, but putting it together is not difficult at all. Frying it up the next morning is a piece of cake, and it is quite satisfying. Personally, I was not fond of the strong onion flavor (but husband liked it), so next time I will reduce or eliminate onions (when the day comes that he makes it, husband can add onions). One thing I might add next time to bring the stars up to 5 (in addition to the fat and calories) is to stir cheese into the grits immediately after they have finished cooking. Great comfort food (and not too bad for a hangover, either).

Quinoa and Black Beans

Excellent recipe. Quinoa adds a slightly different taste and texture than rice -- nuttier. It's very good.

Pumpkin Black Bean Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 5, 2009
This is a great base recipe, but as written, I probably would have given the recipe 3 stars. I made the soup and there was just something . . . . missing. Although other reviewers mentioned adding cumin and cayenne, I wanted to emphasize the pumpkin (which is VERY subtle) instead of the black beans. I borrowed from a Bon Appetite pumpkin soup recipe and added: 2 Tbsp sugar, 1/2 tsp each of nutmeg, cinnamon, corriander and sage, and 1/4 tsp. of allspice and curry. I then brought it to a boil and turned it low, low (below simmering) for about an hour to let the flavors meld. Wow. Complex, interesting soup. Loved it. Wouldn't recommend adding all the spices if you have little ones, but for a more adventuresome palate the modifications are tasty.

Green Onion Biscuits

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2011
I wanted to like this recipe; I really did. I mean, how can you go wrong with biscuits, and the fact that I could put my extra green onions to use was a bonus, right? I should have known something was wrong when instead of using butter or shortening it called for vegetable oil. The biscuits came out chewy on the inside (and no, I didn't overwork the dough), and the flavor was completely blah. Husband couldn't find anything good to say about them (and he's very good at looking at the bright side of things); he asked me not to make them again.

Gluten-Free Pie Crust

Reviewed: Nov. 9, 2010
Excellent crust - the best GF crust I've made so far (and I don't think it will get much better). Although it's been about two years since I've tasted a wheat flour crust, I would be surprised to know this wasn't a regular crust if I hadn't made it myself. I made exactly to directions. Will use for all my pies and quiches going forward
