Simple White Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 24, 2011
This was easy to make and was pretty tasty. From other reviews, I expected a dense cake (I made cupcakes) but it was even heavier than I expected. I suspect it was partly due to overmixing of the batter (I tried to dye it purple for Easter, didn't work very well since the batter was yellow-ish, and led to mixing too much, trying to blend the colour in) and also overbaking. The time stated here would have been too much in my oven, I did 18 minutes and probably could have done a minute or two less. Still it was an easy and good cake to make, I would make again, being careful about overmixing.

Grandma's Lemon Meringue Pie

Reviewed: Apr. 22, 2011
This was a good pie, not the greatest lemon meringue pie I've ever tasted, but no complaints. I used the zest of just one lemon since I don't like much zest in baked good, and I added vanilla to the meringue. I used the recipe for Grandma's Secret Pie Crust (halved) from this site, I use it for most pies I make and would highly recommend it. I took the suggestion of another reviewer to bake the pie for 12-15 minutes instead of 10 and I think the meringue overbaked a little, so I would suggest you start with 10 minutes and then check it. If you're new to meringue like me I also suggest you check out AllRecipe's video on making a perfect lemon meringue pie. I made the mistake of watching it after I'd made the pie and it would have been helpful as I wasn't sure exactly when the meringue was done whipping and I think I overdid it.

Robbi's M&M Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2011
Excellent cookies! I made them with Mini Eggs instead of M&Ms. I crushed/chopped the eggs to put in the dough, then placed a whole egg on top of each cookie. I didn't do anything else differently from the recipe except maybe a bit more vanilla. I also made them regular-size and got 30 cookies out of it - baked at 350 for about 15-17 minutes.

Cheesy Chicken Meatballs

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2011
Excellent meatballs! Didn't do much differently, except to use just one egg, plain cream cheese and about half the amount of red pepper (and they were plenty spicy for me!) Judging from the recipe photos, the cream cheese should have blended in more. I had globs of it here and there in the meatballs, which tasted good but I think next time I would microwave the cream cheese a bit to get it to blend in easier.

Chicken Chimi in the Oven

Reviewed: Mar. 30, 2011
We liked these a lot, with some slight modifications. I used only 1T chili powder and it was PLENTY. I also meant to add only a teeny bit of cinnamon but the shaker got away from me a little and added probably more than what's called for - but it's okay it didn't really taste cinnamon-y at all, so no need to be afraid of the 1/2 tsp. I didn't bother with the blender, but mashed up the salsa a bit with a potato masher - I don't even think that's necessary though unless you have REALLY thick salsa. I added a little shredded cheese too, but we didn't even really notice it, so I'd say it's not really necessary to add (or add quite a bit). I also only had 6-inch tortillas - I got 10 6-inch chimis with these filling measurements. The final product was very good - we ate just with some sour cream, but I'd like to try to find a sauce that will compliment them. My favourite restaurant chimi gets served with ranchero sauce.

Raspberry Lemon Muffins

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2011
These are good. Even though they're pretty healthy as is, I used whole wheat flour for part of the ap, and fat free no sugar added yogurt. I upped the lemon juice to 2 tbsp because I didn't have the extract, and just used 1 whole egg, because I'm lazy and it seemed easier. I made a whole pan of mini-muffins and a few regular sized, and the regular sized worked better. For the minis, the raspberries took up a lot of room in the muffin cups and when if one ended up against the side or the bottom, a whole side of the muffin was soggy. The taste was great in both sizes though.

These are REALLY good, a lot better than we were expecting actually. Made them as per the recipe, don't think I'd change anything!

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie

Reviewed: Mar. 20, 2011
These cookies are delicious! I've made them exactly as the recipe states several times and most recently I've made the dough minus the chocolate chips to make Mars bar-stuffed cookies - it worked great!

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 20, 2011
The flavour was great. I would have liked them to be a bit softer; perhaps I baked them too long but I also didn't seem to bake long enough to get the nice cracks on the top. No big deal though, they tasted great! Edit - I just made these for the second time, for my Christmas goodies tray again, and you know I really can't figure out why I gave only 4 stars last year. No nice cracks, a bit chewier than soft? Who cares, they taste AMAZING and really deserve the 5 stars!

These are yummy and easy. I didn't find them mind-blowing amazing, but have no complaints either. Everyone who ate them seemed to enjoy them!

EAGLE BRAND® Peanut Butter Fudge

Reviewed: Mar. 20, 2011
This is amazing fudge! So easy to make and tasted wonderful, and not sickly sweet like a lot of regular chocolate fudge. Like other reviewers, I used crunchy PB and omitted the chopped peanuts.

Sex on the Beach III

Reviewed: Mar. 19, 2011
This is my favourite mixed drink! I'd never made my own before and am glad I chose this recipe, it's great! The colour is a lot more pink than what I'm used to getting in a bar but the taste was pretty bang on. Maybe it had something to do with me greatly increasing the recipe yield and combining it all in a pitcher. Doesn't matter, it was great!

Baked Potato Dip

Reviewed: Mar. 19, 2011
This was good following others' suggestion to add a packet of ranch seasoning. I think it would have been pretty boring without some seasoning. If you don't have ranch, some garlic powder and pepper would at least be a good start. I cooked my own bacon and used a little less cheese, and it was a big hit! I'd gotten a store-bought dip as well in case people didn't like this one and the store dip was not touched at all.

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 19, 2011
4000+ reviewers can't be wrong - these are great! So easy to make and roll out, baked up perfectly and held their shape. I used this recipe to make cookie lollipops and before they baked, I was a little concerned that the cookie would be too fragile to hold by the stick, but it worked out great! The first batch that baked came out a little crispier than I like, so I took a minute off the bake time and rolled a little thicker for the second batch - perfect! I did take the suggestions of other reviewers to up the sugar and vanilla a little bit.

Sugar Cookie Icing

Reviewed: Mar. 19, 2011
Very good and easy cookie icing. I used vanilla instead of almond and it seemed a tad thin so I added another 1/4 cup of sugar. Had more than enough to decorate 12 cookies.

Baked Honey Mustard Chicken

Reviewed: Mar. 2, 2011
This was good, and easy! I used a little less paprika, and used dijon mustard like some of the other reviewers. Totally forgot the salt and pepper, but I didn't miss it. I had only three chicken breasts, and reduced the sauce by a third, not half, and it was just about enough, so I think if I'd made 6 breasts, I would have wanted more sauce.

Strawberry Oatmeal Bars

We thought these were tasty but a bit dry and crumbly. I added cinnamon to the topping and I think I would use more coconut - it wasn't very noticeable.

Clone of a Cinnabon

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2011
I don't think there's much I can add to the thousands of reviews on this recipe... amazing!! I made them in my Kitchenaid stand mixer by following some of the tips from other reviewers who didn't use a bread machine, and letting the mixer do the kneading - it only took a few minutes on speed 2 with the dough hook. I didn't make the frosting from this recipe as I had leftover cream cheese frosting from another recipe, but it seems pretty similar to the one given here. *EDIT: I've now made the frosting in this recipe and it's definitely very good too!

Chocolate Cappuccino Cheesecake

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2011
This was good but not as great as I was expecting based on the reviews. We found that there really wasn't much of a coffee or Kahlua taste. It was also a bit less firm than we generally like for cheesecakes but it was still tasty. The crust also didnt' really solidify into a real crust, but again, taste was good. The whipped cream was really nice too, we all liked that!
