Cookin' Around the Christmas Tree

I'm like a little kid still when it comes to Christmas, I get super excited. Last weekend was tree-decorating weekend. I went to my parents' house and my mom and I put their tree up (ok, my dad literally put it up, but then he disappears and leaves the ornament-hanging to the women-folk). One of my favourite parts of the Christmas season is opening up all the treasured ornaments, some newer, some old favourites. I love all of 'my' ornaments on their tree; multiple Baby's First Christmas ornaments from 25 Christmases ago, and my favourites - a bunch of brass ornaments that have my name and birthdate on them, including a little brass angel, a baby sleeping in a cradle, and a brass Christmas tree with baby toys under it. To my horror, I discovered this year that the brass Christmas tree is slightly broken; the little hole at the top where the hook goes was missing. We managed to get it on the tree though :)

This is my second year of having my own little tree in my apartment; no new ornaments yet this year, they're all from last year but I wanted to share some of them since I have a few cooking-related ones!

These are my three cupcakes ornaments I ordered myself from an Avon catalogue last year:

A Hallmark ornament from last, a bunch of cooking utensils in a snowflake shape:

Another 2011 Hallmark ornament, cookies and gingerbread house on a cooling rack:

Pillsbury dough boy holding up a cookie. My brother bought me this ornament two Christmases ago, it came up with a recipe for the cookies, but I'm not sure where that is now!
And some non-cooking related ones... My Jack Sparrow in a jail cell ornament :) There's a button that you can push to have it play the "yo-ho, a pirate's life for me" song

My Disney collectible Cinderella and Snow White high heels. These came in a set in 2009; the year after the set that came out was Beauty and the Beast and something else (Little Mermaid, maybe..something I didn't really care about) but Beauty and the Beast is my absolute favourite... but my mom didn't want to buy me another set :(

And finally, the whole tree, all lit up :)
Merry Christmas, AR friends :)

Maybe a jeweler could fix that brass ornament for you. Not sure, but maybe they could weld a new loop on it for you.

Good idea! Actually maybe I could fix it myself, I probably have some old jewellery making supplies somewhere, or could easily get some kind of loop. I didn't even think of that!

Alex, so very cool that you have so many meaningful ornaments to start with - you'll treasure them forever and remember where you were in your life when you got them or were given them. Merry Christmas!

Thanks for sharing! I love this time of year, too, and a big part is decorating the tree. We have a lot of eclectic and sentimental I can't wait to dig into them! Merry Christmas! Your tree is beautiful! :)

Thank you Boysenberry and Christine :) Merry Christmas to you and yours as well

Wonderful pictures Alex, thanks for sharing your memories.Merry Christmas.

Alex!! How are you?!? Haven't seen you around lately?
Dec. 9, 2012 6:47 pm
I just love all your "meaningful" ornaments. When we got married 31 years ago we started a tradition where we purchase an ornament on every vacation. Our tree is now filled with nothing but those "meaningful" ornaments and I love unwrapping each one and remembering where we have been through the years.

Alex!!!! I haven't seen you around...I probably just miss you in the evenings on the buzz. I'm glad you have that joy of helping your Mom and Dad with the tree decorating. It is really something how each ornament can trigger a special memory of the past, and to me is one of the most special traditions of Christmas. Your little tree is adorable and you are starting your own new ornament box of memories. Merry Christmas Alex.

Hi Heather, I'm alright :) Just haven't been cooking much and I've been socializing on facebook instead of here :P Talk of nothing but pinterest and the allstars here bored me a bit.

Hi Mother Ann! that's how a Christmas tree should be :) my mother keeps saying "one of these years, I'm just going to do a beautiful blue and white/gold and silver/whatever colours tree" and I'm like, uh no... what about all of our ornaments that we love that wouldn't fit your colour scheme?! including old ugly ones that my brother and I handmade 20 years ago.

Hi Sherri :) Nah, you haven't been just missing me, I haven't been posting much! Just been browsing recipes while I eat takeout and frozen food, must start actually cooking again! Thanks for your comments and merry Christmas!!

Alex, I know what you mean about seeing the Christmas ornaments that have been collected over the years. Your little tree looks lovely! Merry Christmas to you Alex, may you have a safe and happy one!

I still have my original Christmas stocking ... It is so old and when I look at it the years gone by speak to me in volumns. Everything back then was larger than life. I too have some very special ornaments that I treasure. I also have old old Christmas balls that are older than me that my parents had.

Thanks Cat, merry Christmas :)

Hi Linda :) my brother and I have our original stockings too, but we upgraded to newer, bigger ones a few years ago for actual use. I love my original teddy bear Christmas stocking though, maybe if I ever have a kid, it can become their stocking :)

Hi, Alex!!! I'm so glad I clicked on this blog....I didn't know who wrote it, but the title caught my eye. What a nice surprise to find you and to see your beautiful tree! I love unwrapping each ornament and thinking of the special person that gave it to me or the place it was purchased, more than unwrapping presents. After Christmas, I'm always sad to pack them away again, but I lovingly wrap each one like it's moving across the country! I have some from my grandparents and parents, handmade ones from special people, some I made, and some unique storebought ones. I haven't been coming around AR much myself lately, but I do miss seeing you here. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, Alex! So good to see you, you've been missed. Your tree is beautiful and how fun for you to decorate 2 trees. The DoughBoy from your brother is very cute. Enjoy the baking, decorating, family and friends this holiday season.

About Me
I'm mostly a baker but I like cooking too - now that I've moved out on my own, I am starting with the challenge of cooking for one with little freezer space to make stuff ahead or freeze leftovers. Wish me luck!
My favorite things to cook
For baking, definitely love cookies and brownies/bar cookies, have gotten into doing pies more recently. Have dabbled in some cake decorating, but it's not my forte. For cooking, pastas, stir frys, chicken!
My favorite family cooking traditions
The only 'tradition' I can think of is helping my grandmother with her cannoli shells at Christmas. My job is rolling the dough around the cannoli tubes. This past year I also helped with the cream filling :)
My cooking tragedies
No big tragedies, really. One semi-recent incident with chocolate oatmeal muffins coming out of the oven looking like and tasting like hockey pucks (still can't figure out why!) Also have had a few buttercream fails, buttercream is my nemesis.
