Making a House (or Apartment) a Home

Hi AR people! I'm a bit tardy with this as a lot of you had asked me to take more pictures of my not-so-new-anymore place when it was more in order. I've been still working on it slowly, and it's really coming together now, decorative wise. Still not complete, I still need something for above the living room couch and I've got nothing decorative in the bedroom still, but it's really looking nice I think! Especially since my mom and my aunt came over this weekend and did some cleaning up! :)

So here's just a few pics, mostly of cool wall items. I'm not the best photographer, keep in mind!

Here's my dining room table and chairs, they hadn't been delivered when I last posted pictures of my place. I haven't actually used it for dining yet, but I like it! The centrepiece I got for Christmas, it three flameless candles (not lit... they each take 3 batteries, screw that) with rocks in the base. And I forgot to put the window shade down apparently...

This picture overlooks the dining room table.

This is the "bar" area of the dining room, kind of. It's a bookshelf, but on top is a cute silver tray with small shotglasses that my friends bought that are shaped like other liquor glasses - there's a mini-highball glass, a mini 'beer boot', a mini martini glass and a mini wine glass. And next to the silver tray is a cake server shaped like a high heeled shoe. Naturally the "bar" area seemed like the best place for the wine picture! You can also see on the adjoining wall a nice canvas print of an electric guitar.

This is the other bookcase on the other side of the dining room. On top of it is a funky white lamp from Ikea I got for Christmas and above are two decorative stones from Bed Bath and Beyond (nearly everything on my walls comes from BB&B. A store opened near me recently and my aunt went nuts buying me prints and stuff). I now realize the picture is sideways... the two stones, the top one has an acoustic guitar and says 'Play' and the lower one has a vinyl record and says 'Music'

These are three hooks from BB&B, shaped like guitar heads. My keys are hanging from two of them. I've got nothing so far to put on the third.

These are hanging in the corner of the living room. They're impossible to read in the picture but they are both quotes dealing with peace. The green one is a Dalai lama quote and the orange one is by John F Kennedy.

And next the entertainment area... these are above the TV as you can see. I wish the top one was spelled the Canadian way, but what can ya do...

And just over to the right of the TV, these are above the DVD shelf. And the cat face is a cat statue on top of the shelf.

And finally, this one will be all of yours favourite I think! My kitchen wall clock! Isn't it cool?!

Well that's my homier place :) Hope you like the pictures, they took forever to load!

Looks really nice. (yes, i love the clock!) Thanks for sharing. :)
Feb. 7, 2012 5:27 pm
Very cool Alex. It's really coming together and shows a lot of personality. Isn't it fun decorating your own place?
Feb. 7, 2012 5:28 pm
Very fun Alex! I'm guessing music is a big part of your life? Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Feb. 7, 2012 5:29 pm
How FUN!!!!!!!!! So stealing that clock! :)
Feb. 7, 2012 5:29 pm
I LOVE that clock!
Feb. 7, 2012 5:36 pm
Wow, how cool is your apartment!!! Make it you, as you seem to be doing. Love the pics and placing you have done. Make sure you entertain your friends!
Feb. 7, 2012 5:37 pm
That wall clock could be auctioned off on the Buzz for a lot of money. The apartment you have put together looks wonderful.
Feb. 7, 2012 5:41 pm
Looks great Alex!! You have more stuff up on the walls and you haven't been in your apartment that long. We have been in our house almost 14 years and still have mostly blank walls. Oh well!!
Feb. 7, 2012 5:45 pm
Love it! I'm going to have to find those guitar holders!
Feb. 7, 2012 6:07 pm
I like the key holders! A Richenbacher on the left, McCartneys bass, a Strat in the center but the one on the right has me stumped.
Feb. 7, 2012 6:07 pm
Hi ladies! Glad you like :) Yes music at least *was* a big part of my life... I still love it, but I don't play much anymore. I keep meaning to get back into it. I really should while I have time on my hands. I LOVE my clock too :) My parents said it was the most excited I've ever been about a gift when I opened it on Christmas morning :)
Feb. 7, 2012 6:09 pm
Oop, Randy your comment was there when I said 'ladies', I promise! :) I'm not sure what the one on the right is, it doesn't say and I don't recognize it as a particular model.
Feb. 7, 2012 6:10 pm
*your comment WASN'T there.
Feb. 7, 2012 6:25 pm
You are right! LOVE the clock! How cute! Also like the guitar heads! Nice job! It looks like a lovely home all your own!
Feb. 7, 2012 6:29 pm
I LOVE the clock!!! Dontcha just love Bed, Bath & Beyond? It looks like everything is coming together nicely :)
Feb. 7, 2012 6:30 pm
I found the wall clock at
Feb. 7, 2012 6:31 pm
I DO love Bed Bath and Beyond! It can get pricey though. I was just looking at wall mirrors on the website earlier this evening, saw one I really liked... then saw the listed price. $339, no thanks.
Feb. 7, 2012 6:36 pm
I try to buy things only when I have one (or more) of their coupons. It takes a little of the bite out!
Feb. 7, 2012 6:37 pm
Right now I'm eyeing a Mini Desserts cookbook they have, but will wait until I get another coupon in the mail. When I asked about the lack of coupons recently, the manager said they don't send out many right after Christmas, but it should pick up again soon.
Feb. 7, 2012 7:13 pm
Thanks for the reminder, I DO have a coupon! In my Food Network magazine. I'll have to read the fine print though, chances are not valid in Canada..
Feb. 7, 2012 7:24 pm
LOVE the guitar head key holders! That is too cool! Nice making your house a home!
Feb. 7, 2012 9:04 pm
Oh, Alex, thanks for posting more apt pics for us to see! Wow! Lots of additions since you last shared. LOVE. The. Clock. I am so glad you are still enjoying your apt and are happy you made the move. It isn't easy, but sounds like you really are happy where you are. Thanks again for sharing with us!!!

Alex, it took me many years to install a key hook. Countless panic hours in the morning looking for keys! How did you figure that out - LOL! You are doing a great job and we enjoy your updates...thanks!

You have certainly personalized your place! I would feel quite comfortable if I came to visit! Your KA clock is adorable! It looks like you've got a great place!
Feb. 8, 2012 4:33 am
Super cute, Alex...I really dig all the guitar stuff! :)
Feb. 8, 2012 4:46 am
Good morning new ladies that have posted comments :) Yep I am definitely still happy in my place. It gets a bit tiresome having to do allll my chores myself, but it's worth it for the peace and freedom :) Everyone can come visit, but not all at once, or it'll have to be BYOC - bring your own chair! I only have the four dining room chairs :)
Feb. 8, 2012 5:15 am
WOW Alex, you've been busy! Way to go girl. Your place looks great and I'm glad you're enjoying it (well, except the part about having to do ALL the chores, lol). Thanks for the update!

I’m impressed at how quickly and beautifully you have decorated. I love how you have personalized it with the wonderful music and peace d├ęcor. You’ve got a lot accomplished since your last post. Great job!
Feb. 8, 2012 5:38 am
I am absolutely in love with your kitchen wall clock. As for not using your dining set. I remember putting mine together so soon after moving in, so assured I needed it set up. I think it took a year to use it. lol. I ended up eating at the coffee table in front of the TV. Invite guests over and have a dinner party - that will give it some use! :)
Feb. 8, 2012 5:42 am
I eat in front of the TV too, lol. I am going to have my parents and/or aunts over soon for a dinner party I think. My friends never want to come for dinner. I've tried.
Feb. 8, 2012 5:55 am
Your friends don't know what they are missing! So many interesting things on your walls.
Feb. 8, 2012 6:22 am
I love all of your art work onthe walls! That clock is the best of all! You have done a super job with your apt.!
Feb. 8, 2012 6:59 am
Alex, your home is tasteful and shows your personality. Very nice. Really like the dining room. All your wall accents are great! Congratulations again.
Feb. 8, 2012 9:33 am
I like your centerpiece!! I am looking for a candle-ish centerpiece for the table my husband made for us and yours does look cool!
Feb. 8, 2012 10:21 am
I can see the influence music, esp. guitars, has had on your life. Don't "fret" about finishing the decor, it will always be a work in progress. Where did you get the fab kitchen clock? I want it!
Feb. 8, 2012 10:23 am
Thanks everyone for liking my place! ;) Covergirl, my parents bought me the clock at some funky accessory store. It's by Allen Designs, King Sparta posted a link above somewhere in the comments for where it's available online :)
Feb. 8, 2012 12:58 pm
That wall clock is too cute. Don't worry if it seems to take a little longer than you thought to get things done, it will come together!
Feb. 8, 2012 1:58 pm
Your apartment seems fun, girlish but sophisticated. I think you and your family have done a wonderful job!
Feb. 8, 2012 3:52 pm
Fantastic decorating! I love it and of course the clock also! Welcome Home Young Girl! Enjoy!!!!
Feb. 8, 2012 6:17 pm
Nice job on decorating and love the kitchen clock. And the guitar heads too!
Feb. 9, 2012 6:29 am
Love that clock!! On that empty guitar head hook, I might hang a colorful scarf. You have lots of nice art, Alex. Thanks for sharing!
Feb. 9, 2012 9:12 am
We can always count on King Sparta to do the research. Thank you both.
Feb. 9, 2012 2:46 pm
Glad you all approve of my decor! :)
Feb. 9, 2012 3:04 pm
Wonderful job, Alex. I love your candles, bar area and your clock. You did great!!
Feb. 10, 2012 6:33 am
Looks great, Alex. You've done a much better job than I did with my first apartment when I was 22! While all the wall art is great, my faves are the peace them!
Feb. 10, 2012 8:26 am
What a nice place you have there, Alex! It has all come together so fast for you. Great to have family to help you out with some of the purchases...that sure helps with the budget! I loved the purples shown in your pics of your bedroom awhile back. Are you able to paint any of your walls? The prints and wall decor sure add nice pops of color. Great job!
Feb. 10, 2012 9:38 am
I'm not really supposed to paint, no. If I did, I'd have to paint it back to beige before moving out. Not sure it's worth the hassle! I do miss colour though. There were lots of paint colours in my parents' house, my room was neon green there! That's one reason I'd like to own a place one day, painting the walls whatever colour I like :)
Feb. 10, 2012 9:40 am
By the way if someone else commented this morning and I deleted it by accident, I'm sorry! I could swear I deleted a post this morning because it was one of those spammy ones but when I just came back now, the spam was still there! So I hope I didn't delete someone else's comment :S
Feb. 10, 2012 6:26 pm
It's always fun to decorate. I love the clock!
Feb. 10, 2012 7:42 pm
Your apartment is so cute. I am LOVING that wall clock! I agree with Marie C.... you could auction that sucker off and for a hefty sum too! abadaba abadaba....... do I hear......
Feb. 10, 2012 9:23 pm
I got that wall clock for Christmas! It's adorable but we hate the darned thing. The hands are messed up so it's very hard to tell what time it is, the pendulum doesn't work, and it arrived all scratched up. Bah. Glad yours is better than ours and your apartment looks great :)
Feb. 11, 2012 8:07 am
Alex.... Looks great!!! I adore the guitar decor and the clock! We have that same rule in our town homes. We can paint but would need to paint it back white before we moved out. While I would love to paint I know I wouldn't want to paint it back haha:) I would love to own my own place again... Someday:)
Feb. 11, 2012 8:39 am
Love the clock!!! Where did you get it?
Feb. 11, 2012 9:52 am
Way cool stuff, Alex - I like your taste. I love, love all the music stuff! And I'm still jealous over your purple bedroom!
Feb. 11, 2012 4:42 pm
Ooh Bunny Chef, sorry to hear your clock wasn't so great :( I do agree that it's not the clearest clock for actually telling what time it is, but I have time display on my oven and microwave so the clock is really just decoration, not functional. I like the pendulum though :) Catlyn, my parents bought it at a shop nearby, but they're available online, the link is posted in one of the first few comments :)
Feb. 11, 2012 4:44 pm
Thanks everyone for all the comments! My aunt who helped a lot with the purchasing, placing and hanging of all this stuff asked me yesterday if I'm still liking it now that it's been up for a couple of weeks (some have been up longer) and I said yes, and that my recipe site peeps approve, and she was pleased :)
Feb. 12, 2012 3:25 am
Came across your pics and all that nice sharing by accident. Your place is cool and if you want folks over maybe take some of your baking over to them. If they don't come over maybe you can expand your friend base. Enjoy.
Feb. 13, 2012 11:57 am
Hola chica! I too, LOVE how you staged your place! fabuloso!! :) and you are right, it should be 'THEATRE' :) I need to find those guitar hooks for my daughter and her husband, he plays in a band he has bout 12 hanging all over their townhouse. They would be a great Xmas present... if I remember them then! :) Congrats on decorating your 'home'! You have done a great job!
Feb. 13, 2012 6:43 pm
I love that clock so much, I just went to ebay, found it and bought it. Thanks!

About Me
I'm mostly a baker but I like cooking too - now that I've moved out on my own, I am starting with the challenge of cooking for one with little freezer space to make stuff ahead or freeze leftovers. Wish me luck!
My favorite things to cook
For baking, definitely love cookies and brownies/bar cookies, have gotten into doing pies more recently. Have dabbled in some cake decorating, but it's not my forte. For cooking, pastas, stir frys, chicken!
My favorite family cooking traditions
The only 'tradition' I can think of is helping my grandmother with her cannoli shells at Christmas. My job is rolling the dough around the cannoli tubes. This past year I also helped with the cream filling :)
My cooking tragedies
No big tragedies, really. One semi-recent incident with chocolate oatmeal muffins coming out of the oven looking like and tasting like hockey pucks (still can't figure out why!) Also have had a few buttercream fails, buttercream is my nemesis.
