Gujarati Kadhi

Reviewed: Aug. 22, 2010
Really really delicious! My husband makes the khichdi, I make the kadhi. The first time I made this recipe, hubby was a little skeptical about the turmeric and cilantro, but I followed the recipe as written. It was excellent, but in subsequent batches I left out the turmeric and kept the cilantro (not "traditional" in our book, but sometimes it's good to part with tradition!) Also, I've used low fat yogurt and low fat laban - reducing the water added. Both work great!

Mom's Coleslaw

Reviewed: May 29, 2010
so easy. so simple. so delicious! the first time i made this coleslaw i made it exactly as written, and it's awesome. while i do love real mayo, i just made a batch swapping the regular mayo for half light and half plain unsweetened yogurt. it's STILL delicious!

Vegetarian Pasties

Reviewed: Apr. 13, 2010
My husband and I both really liked this recipe, they reminded me of my mum's U.P. pasties :) I will definitely make them again. Like other people have said, I also made some changes to suit my tastes, and I actually like the fact that this recipe seems so versatile. First, I made the dough for the crust with half whole wheat and half all purpose flour, and I used a heart healthy light margarine instead of butter. I reduced the amount of olive oil sightly, added some fresh chopped garlic, used only two potatoes, and added some cauliflower and carrots. I chose to use (pre-soaked) green lentils 'cause they're the "beefiest" lentils ;) I also seasoned with a splash of Worcestershire sauce, mild garlic Tabasco sauce, and some pinches of oregano, marjoram, sage, and thyme. Brilliant!!!

Vegetarian Gravy

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2010
Great tasting, easy to make vegetarian gravy! I increased the onion amount and threw in some garlic too. Nutritional yeast is delicious, but non-existent in my current corner of the world, so I just left that out, no problem. Oh, and just to experiment, I used 2 T soy sauce, and 2 T Worcestershire sauce - it was great with our mashed potatoes and lentil loaf!

Mushy Peas I

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2010
Perfectly delicious! I love mushy peas with my fish n chips at the pub, but had never thought of making them at home, now I think I'll make them all the time, they're so good and easy to make! I made this and mashed potatoes with veg gravy to accompany the lentil loaf recipe - my husband and i were in heaven! I did use just my regular low fat milk instead of the heavy cream and wasn't bothered by it.

Peanut Butter Bars I

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2009
Really great recipe! So delicious! I made these with natural peanut butter and reduced the amount of sugar slightly. My husband thought they were VERY sweet, and I agreed, I think I'd try going down to a cup and a half sugar, and one and half sticks butter too. overall - AWESOME!

Unsloppy Joes

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2009
definitely a very yummy and healthy veg sloppy joe recipe! i have used veggie "meat" and manwich sauce in the past, but i think this is WAY better because you control the ingredients (especially the sodium, which can get so high with all prepackaged food!) and i love using fresh veggies and beans. i prepared dry kidney beans instead of using canned beans(again less sodium). i also greatly decreased the black & chili pepper amount, and kept adding vinegar until i liked the taste. i added a pinch of brown sugar too. it made a bunch, so i think i might try freezing half as another reviewer suggested. great recipe!

Vegetarian Kofta Kabobs

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2009
overall pretty tasty! i also used kidney beans and used my hand blender to make a thick mush of everything. i used an extra egg and added more hot sauce, onion and garlic. i omitted the milk for soaking the bread, just added crumbled dry bread. i made the balls in the shape and size that kibbeh/kofta usually is and put them on skewers (which was tricky) but it just seems best to make about golf ball size balls and forget the skewers. delicious with yogurt sauce, hummus, tabouli etc. as part of a meza dinner (instead of falafel, really) my husband and i both really liked this recipe and we'll definitely make it again.

Faux Meat Balls

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2009
tasty comfort food, but i couldn't get them to stay in balls, either. so i just let them crumble and mixed with farfalle pasta. made nice leftovers too.

Garbanzo Bean Burgers

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2009
both my boyfriend and i thought these were so so sooo good! i was afraid at first that the mixture was too gloppy, but i plopped it by the spoonful on the baking sheet and they came out great. i didn't have any red chilies so i used a few pinches of crushed chili flakes. also, i made the patties early in the day and just let them sit. hours later i warmed them on our george foreman grill. this is a super easy and yummy recipe that we'll definitely make again and again.
