Basic Ham and Bean Soup

Reviewed: May 1, 2012
We loved the soup. I followed the recipe exactly except I soaked my beans overnight and rinsed the beans out well, used a meaty ham bone, omitted the salt, decreased the water to 7 cups, and put in 4 chicken buillon cubes. I cooked it in the crockpot for 10 hrs and took out the bone and cut the meat and put the ham back in the pot. It was very flavorful and the beans were nice and tender!

Honey Glazed Ham

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2012
Whole family thought the glaze was tasty. As others suggested, I halved the recipe and subbed brown sugar for the corn syrup. Used 1/4 tsp ground cloves instead of the whole (since I had a 8 lb spiral ham) and mixed it in with the other ingredients. The key is to baste it every 15-20 min. Turned out great but I had a lot of glaze left. Next time I will cut the recipe even further.

Slow Cooker Carnitas

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2011
The taste was really good and was nicely spiced. After removing froim the crockpot, I shred it and baked in the oven for 10 minutes to get a nice crisp.

Playgroup Granola Bars

Reviewed: Aug. 22, 2011
These were just ok for me. I didn;t really care for the taste and probably won't make it again. If you want a good recipe try the Gobble Up Granola Snacks on this site.

Gobble Up Granola Snacks

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2011
Very yummy! First time I made it I subbed the corn syrup for honey and it tasted good but was very crumbly. I just made the other day and used half honey and half corn syrup and added just a bit more peanut butter. It held together. I added craisins, chocolate chips, flaxseed meal, and sunflower seeds. Love these and they freeze well too.

Cranberry Nut Bars

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2010
These were very good. I was surprised considering the limited ingredients. I only used half the cranberries, as another reviewer suggested, but the full amount would have been perfect. My bars looked exactly liked the photo.

Banana Crumb Muffins

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2010
Did not like the taste. It was too sweet, did not have enough banana flavor, and does not hold up well the next day. I threw most of the muffins away. Will not make again.

Super-Delicious Zuppa Toscana

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2010
Followed exact recipe except I used hot turkey Italian sausage, only 1/4 pepper flakes, and kale instead of spinach. I also left the skin on the potatoes. My husband loves the soup at OG and said this is very similar. He gives it 5 stars but it is too rich for my tastes. It is very high in fat so I will only make it on occasion. Next time I won't use heavy cream.

Aunt Anne's Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2010
The cake was good. I followed others suggestions and subbed half of the white sugar for brown sugar for the streusel topping. For extra flavor, I added cinnamon extract to the cake. I also baked the cake in an 8x8 pan for 40 minutes. I didn't put the topping on until the last 10 minutes of baking, which prevents it from sinking into the cake. A 9x13 pan is way too large for the amount of batter. If a 9x13 cake was used, you would have a really thin cake. The 8x8 pan was the perfect size and I didn't need to double the topping.

Pasta Pomodoro

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2010
This recipe was just ok. It needed more flavor. The requested amount of pasta noodles are way too much. You only need half the amount.

American Lasagna

Reviewed: Jun. 20, 2010
Just made it tonight and it was absolutely delicious. This recipe is far superior and tastier than the top rated World's Best Lasagna on this site. I followed the recipe exactly but added an extra 14 oz can of crushed tomatoes so it wouldn't be dry and just increased the spices a bit to compensate for the extra can. I also only used 9 noodles. I baked it uncovered for 20 minutes than covered it with foil for another hour. My husband said this one is so flavorful and definitely a keeper.

I added a few splashes of balsamic vinegar and squeezed some lemon juice in the mixture. Delicious.

Italian Sausage Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 18, 2010
This soup is delicious. I followed the recipe exactly, but used hot Italian turkey sausage (1/2 lb only), doubled the spinach, and added cubed potatoes. I will definitely make this again.

Aunt Teen's Creamy Chocolate Fudge

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2009
This recipe was so easy to make. After it came to a boil, I continued to cook it on medium-low heat for a full 7 minutes, constantly stirring it. I had everything measured beforehand so everything came together very easily. I used 2 cups semi-sweet and 1 cup milk chocolate. I also decreased the sugar by 1/4 cup. It was very creamy and such a breeze to cut after it was refrigerated for 2 hrs. I don't like fudge. Fudge is usually too rich for my taste. But my husband loves fudge and he said super good and gave it 5 stars.

Banana Banana Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 9, 2009
This bread was so dense and dry and it didn't have a lot of flavor. I even added vanilla and cinnamon as others suggested. It was beautiful when it came out of the oven but the taste wasn't very good. My husband said he didn't like it and told me not make it again. I usually make banana bread with buttermilk so it's nice and moist.

Chicken Breasts with Balsamic Vinegar and Garlic

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2009
I would give this 4.5 stars if I could. This is not a 5 star recipe though because I had to reduce the amount of the red wine vinegar because it would have been too overpowering as is. I only used 1/8 cup like many of the other reviewers suggested. I thought the sauce was very good, especially with the mushrooms. I served with red roasted potatoes and asparagus.

Apple Crisp IV

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2009
Mmmmm this was very good. The topping had the perfect amount of spice and was the perfect ratio with the apples. My husband rates all the dishes I make from this website and he gave this a thumbs up and 5 stars. Since there are only two of us, I cut the ingredients in half. We served it with vanilla bean ice cream and it was the perfect dessert.

BBQ Pork for Sandwiches

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2009
I followed the recipe exactly but used a pork shoulder (butt) roast and seasoned my roast with garlic powder, salt and pepper. Cooked it on low for 10 hrs and it was very easy to shred and pick out the fat. Used Sweet Baby Rays and loved the flavor. Husband gave it 4 stars because putting it in the oven for 30 minutes dried it out a bit. Good thing we had an extra bottle of bbq sauce to make it less dry. I would definitely make it again.

Lemon Poppy Seed Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2009
My husband and I did not care for this recipe. He said it wasn't lemony enough, even though I added an additional 1/2 cup lemon juice. It baked up nicely but the flavor was too mild. I didn't make the glaze so maybe that would have made it taste better.
